The Grocery Game Challenge June 4-10 Name Your Price?

We’re back with a new month and a new Grocery Game Challenge.. can you believe it’s June already? This month I want to talk about prices and what you are willing to pay for a product.  Name your price… what are you willing to pay for a product to take it home for your family. Since Mrs.CBB and I have been using coupons and have stockpiled many items we now know what a good price is and what a not so good price is. Does this hamper our grocery shops? Sometimes it does especially when an item we need is not on sale nor do we have a coupon. Sales cycles happen every few months so you start to know what items will be on sale and when. Unfortunately when you need something, you simply can’t wait a few months down the line until the next $dollar sale happens. Other options for us is to wait until Shoppers Drug Mart has a 20x points event or  Spend $75 get 18,500 points. Although most will say Shoppers Drug Mart is overpriced to begin with if you shop wise on these bonus days you can come out ahead. Since we know pretty much […]

The Grocery Game Challenge May 28-June 3 Hot Hot Hot!

We are now in the last week of May and it sure has been abnormally HOT for most of us in Southwestern Ontario.  Please let it rain mother nature! We’ve  been using the barbeque quite a bit for the past couple months.  Nothing like a bbq, and nice cold beer and having your mates around. Since purchasing a new gas barbeque earlier this year we are happy with our decision of  buying one with the side burner and rotisserie. We use the side burner to boil potatoes, corn and small fry ups.  This saves us money rather than using the electric stove in the house with the added bonus of  not heating up the house. We have yet to put our Central Air on likely around July same as last year although we hardly use it. We have also been cooking from scratch lately and rather enjoying the recipes I’ve developed in the kitchen. Recently I made Mr.CBB’s Slammin Chili with a Spicy Cheddar Bacon Corn bread which was so good and paired well with the chili. I’ll be posting the chili recipe later this weekend. With that being said, this week was a slow week in terms of shopping as it […]

The Grocery Game Challenge May 21-27-What’s Your Best Score?

No hockey isn’t the topic of this post and I truthfully have no idea how the game is played. Perhaps I should ask my readers for some tips on the great Canadian Sport and maybe visit a game one day in Toronto,Ontario. Yet Another week is upon us which means more money-saving in the grocery budget, so we hope. Let’s see how creative we can be with the rest of our budget. I think we’ve done well this month especially keeping away from any convenience foods. It can be difficult to do because we come to rely on quick meals but now we have to meal plan and think ahead. We now have chives, spring onions, rhubarb, lettuce and mint in the garden that we have been using daily. What else are we growing? We have tomatos, green  peppers, radishes, figs, spinach, parsely, raspberries and swiss chard growing  in our garden as well. Meal Planning I hope to blog about  how we make our family meal plan shortly but for the most part we take into consideration sales, coupons, pantry items, freezer items and fresh veg. Obviously I’ll go into more detail but for now it’s a learning phase with us just like budgeting was the past few […]

The Grocery Game Challenge-May14-20 Sweeping Up Savings!!

Photo Source By: Canadian Budget Binder Welcome back to your on-line grocery shopping Game! I was unsure if we had killed the The Grocery Game Challenge budget in one blow this week and truly, WE DID! We planned our shop at several stores for this week although there was nothing over the top that we would rush out for. For the most part what we needed can wait another week or two. Here are the Grocery Coupon Match-Ups from Save Big Live Better where you can also find your source for printable grocery coupons as well as Smart Source Printable Coupons. Last Weeks Shop Left Us $2.09 to add to this weeks shop if needed…. yep we need it! $82.70-$80.61=$2.09 left to spend this week! So to start this weeks shop we have the $64.00 weekly grocery budget and the $2.09 for a total of $ 66.09 to spend this week. I want to touch on the subject of food and the budget as most people seem to forget it’s one of life’s biggest expenses. If you are not budgeting you should and like most will be astounded how much you actually spend each month on grocery items even if you use […]

As promised for The Grocery Game Challenge I will post the Coupon Match-Ups May 4-May 10 from SaveBigLiveBetter.  We typically sit on a Sunday and go through these match-ups and design our menu plan for the week and savings attack.  I’m thrilled to see so many new players that want to keep track of their grocery budget and savings by committing to posting it here each week along with me. The Grocery Game Challenge April 30-May 6-Coupon Savings!

This weeks Grocery Game Challenge is all about coupons. Every Thursday evening the flyers arrive at our door and we sit down to take a look at what’s on sale for the week. Although we don’t actually figure out what we will buy until Sunday (this is the day we set aside one hour to do coupon match-ups and our shopping list) we like to make sure we are organized to cut down on time spent on this task. One way is by utilizing not only the flyers but coupon match-ups which are completed weekly by my mate at Save Big Live Better. I thought it would be a great idea to post Save Big Live Better’s Weekly Coupon Match ups here for you to design your shopping list. Once you have your grocery budget for the week and your coupons you are now ready to rock and roll.  I find the match up list easy to use and saves us alot of time, and time is money right? The Grocery Game Challenge runs Mon-Sunday each week so the match-ups will reflect what’s on sale in that flyer rotation. So hopefully the coupon match up I add weekly to The Grocery […]

The Grocery Game Challenge April 23-29 No Shop Week

We are in our last week for April’s Grocery Game Challenge.. how well have you stuck to your Grocery Budget? This week is our No-shop week however we do have a few FPC’s we need to use up so we will be heading out to take advantage of these. Do you have a No Shop week in your Grocery Budget? We started the No-Shop week to keep us out of the stores one week out of the month. We try to simply avoid the flyers and do other things during the week. It doesn’t always work out but for the most part we have  a plan in place and work towards our goals. If we spend any money this week I will update it here. We are already slightly over budget so we have to be strong this week. Recap Last Week Total Shop for the Week for all this is $84.25-$75.32= $8.93 overspend for the month of April. Not bad considering all the milk we bought this month.. I would say we did exceptionally well!! Most of the food here is for our student exchange program in the summer! The cases of water are not pictured. +$10.00 spending card from […]

The Grocery Game Challenge April 16-April 22- Deals, What Deals?

I had to make a last-minute edit to our prior weeks shop which you can see at the end of the post.  We did a late night raid at  Zehrs yesterday to pick up some of the cheapest milk I’ve ever seen. I’m sure I will be back for more and we freeze it and take it out as we need it. This week might just end up being a stock up week and some vegetables. I might even venture into making bread land this week but still am so leary. I wish I had someone to hold my hand through the process. Recap last week! So we had underspent the week earlier and had +$21.11 left after the last shop this week – $10.12 = +11.32 left still in the budget along with $64 =$75.32 for the month to go!! We still have a shop free week so we might actually pull it off this month who knows! There seems to be a secret 20x event at Shopper’s Drug Mart but since we are stocked on milk we might stay away. Posting our budget and shop has made a world of difference to the money we spend. Last year […]
