The best seasoned crispy sweet potato fries

BAKED AND CRISPY LIKE FRENCH FRIES   Sweet potato fries are more than just a healthy alternative to the traditional potato french fry. These orange fleshed beauties are packed with nutrients and won’t give you that heavy full feeling that you get with a white or yellow fleshed potato. When my wife started on her low gi diet she introduced the sweet potato into her meals rather than a bog standard potato. All we read about was how the sweet potato was a “super food” in the nutritional world or the bees knees of root vegetables. Now if you asked me a few months ago if I would have eaten her fried sweet potato fries I would have instantly told you no way. I was not a fan of the sweet potato or yam as they both seem the same to me and I’m still not today unless they are baked sweet potato fries in the oven. I’ve been toying with this sweet potato fry recipe for a while now trying to get it just right. I think I have finally mastered the sweet potato and know how to bake a sweet potato so I can actually enjoy them. […]

Baked Loaded Cauliflower Pizza

Cauliflower Just Got A Whole Lot Better If you are in the mood for an easy pizza recipe or if you aren’t good at making pizza dough than this is the pizza for you. I know you are thinking cauliflower pizza sounds disgusting but trust me it’s far from what you think. The best part is that you don’t need any flour and it’s not going to cost you lots of money to make this frugal pizza in a flash. When I am on Facebook, particularly my Canadian Budget Binder and The Free Recipe Depot pages I see recipes in  my news feed all the time and many of my fans like and share recipes as well. The other day one of my fans and I can’t remember who mentioned or liked this cauliflower pizza recipe and I knew I just had to make it. I thought it was a brilliant idea since we had a great big bowl of cauliflower mash in the refrigerator that my wife and I made the previous day instead of mashed potatoes. Her sister came around with a head of cauliflower that they weren’t going to use up on time and asked if we […]

Mr.CBB’s crispy baked avocado fries with dip

Anything Is Possible With Your Imagination Of course you can make beautiful green fries with an avocado, if you use your imagination. I am a huge fan of the avocado and try and scoop them up when they go on sale at the grocery store. My homemade guacamole dip is a popular tangy party dip around our house and often gets top priority when we throw a get-together for our friends. What is an avocado? If you are not familiar with the avocado they are native to Central Mexico where they grow in abundance and also known as an “alligator pear”. Cultivated in Mediterranean and tropical climates the avocado boasts a green flesh that has a texture similar to butter. You can even grow avocado from the unrefrigerated pit indoors which will sprout but will not produce fruit, rather a decorative tree that you can prune. Grafting from a fruit bearing tree may help speed up the maturity process of an avocado tree. If you want a fruit bearing tree you would have to have more than one tree to cultivate for cross-pollination to happen, as well as plenty of sun. This process may take many years. Either way, just to […]

Mr. CBB’s Meatless Lentil Sloppy Joe

FORGET THE MEAT AND ENJOY THE FLAVOURS No way, a meatless Lentil Sloppy Joe, impossible! It’s true, and it’s delicious. We eat meatless meals in our diet simply because the body doesn’t need meat every single day so we opt for alternatives like lentils. In our house you will normally find red and green lentils that we typically pick up at Food Basics or our local Indian shop. One of our favourite side dishes is simple red lentils and rice which we serve with fish as a Good Friday Meal. When I came up with my version of the Sloppy Joe it quickly became a hit in our house and many of our fans enjoy it as well. We were tired of spending money buying convenience spice packets or pre-made cans to make the everyday frugal comfort foods that most families enjoy. When you read the ingredients on the packets it’s obvious to see that you too can easily create a recipe similar to the original if you use your imagination. The Meatless Sloppy Lentil Joe is simply a switch up using lentils instead of ground mince. I used my original Sloppy Joe Recipe to create my Meatless Lentil Sloppy […]

Mr.CBB’s Thai Fish Cakes

Thai Fish Cakes recipes are so easy to make and the best part is you can flavour them with the tastes that you enjoy. When I was in Thailand on vacation this was a common food you would find on the streets. To be honest I fell in love with Thailand and not only for the generosity of the people and the scenery but for the amazing food. My days would consist of me hanging out with the locals because I was nosey and wanted to learn about their culture. No one wanted to hang out at tourist restaurants, well at least not me. You would find me tucked away on a side street eating some of the best foods I have ever eaten in my life and making new friends. Last week we had our favourite mates over (Christina and Marco) who are Italian to give us a run down of what their family has on their Italian menu for the holidays. Those melt in your mouth Italian Potato donuts we made last week are not only part of their Christmas menu it is also a Christmas eve and New Years Food gracing the good eats tables. They assured us though that […]

Mr.CBB’s Creamy Cauliflower Cheese Bake

I’ve been making this easy Creamy Cauliflower Cheese Bake for years now because my mum used to make it when I was a child. I enjoyed hanging out with my father in the garage “fixing” things but I also enjoyed hanging out with me mum and cooking. I remember the smell of the house when this Cauliflower bake was in the oven. The pungent smell of the strong cheese would make your mouth water. I mean, who doesn’t like cheese right? I know some people can’t eat cheese and I would be heart-broken as cheese does make everything better. I’m not a fan of that cheese whiz stuff so I would never buy that although some people don’t mind it. Besides the cost of the cheese this is a frugal side dish but that is elegant enough to be served at a fancy gathering. Mrs. CBB believe or not has never had a Cauliflower Cheese Bake before so it was my turn to whip up another British Family Traditional recipe in our Canadian home. Technically you could substitute the cauliflower if you didn’t like it and make a cheesy broccoli bake or cheesy potato bake.  If you really want to jazz […]

Mr.CBB’s Cheesy Mashed Potato and Spiced Squash Baked Torpedoes

If you love mashed potatoes, squash or Swede or all 3 you will love this simple cheesy baked recipe. I’ve made this recipe with both the winter squash and the swede. This quick recipe is a frugal finger food that’s perfect for any type of parties such as the boys watching the NFL or any sports game, baby showers, wedding showers,  or the upcoming Holiday Season. If you have extra mashed potato after a meal hang on to it and make these torpedoes for your next party. You don’t need to spend alot of money on appetizers when you can make them in your own kitchen cheaper than pre-made products. For this recipe I prefer to make the mash ahead of time so it has ample time to cool which you need. You can’t make this with hot mash. I know it looks like a lot of work but really it’s not that bad at all it’s fairly straight-forward and simple. What I love about this recipe is that you can change-up the flavours as you like simply by adding spices to your mash mixture. You can easily add some cinnamon or nutmeg to jazz up the taste like I did […]

The Welfare Food Challenge:First 2 Days Of My Menu

As you know I’m dedicating this week at Canadian Budget Binder to The Welfare Food Challenge. This week I will be Blogging about the steps I had to take to purchase food for a week on a budget of $26 dollars for one person. When Raise The Rates launched this challenge I thought this was a great opportunity to understand a bit of what those on social assistance have to go through when it comes to nutrition and the budget. This challenge is to experience what it’s like to live on a grocery budget of $26 a week that of an able-bodied person who receives welfare. This challenge has motivated over 100 people to come forward wanting to participate and has gained wide media coverage. Social Assistance in BC also known as Welfare allows approved recipients $610 a month to live on. Although I don’t live in BC what I do know is that many people right here in Ontario are in need of temporary assistance and apply for Ontario Works each year. A similar challenge called the “Do the Math“ challenge  took place in Ontario back in 2010. I know a couple of my fans on Facebook page were asking […]
