How having a baby affected our budget : Shocking numbers!

IT ALL ADDS UP…   Although we thought having a baby would be pricey our 2014 baby expense numbers that I will share with you today prove that with determination you don’t have to spend a fortune! Were we shocked? You bet because we anticipated spending thousands of dollars more than we did. I’m pretty sure there are going to be moms and dads out there that could slash our expenses even further to save more than we did but the key here is to pick and choose what you need and don’t need. With most mothers going on maternity leave and some fathers on paternity leave this can impact the family budget significantly enough as it is so the last thing you want to do is pay full-price for baby related items if you don’t have to. Surviving having a baby on a lower-income is only half the battle. Although there are ways to earn extra money while on parental leave it’s not easy with a new baby on board but for some parents it’s a great way to earn a bit of extra cash for their bank account.   Surprise, Surprise!   Having a baby after the age […]

The High Costs of Newborn Photos and Birth Videos

MONEY WELL SPENT   I guess you could say I’m a pretty frugal person most of the time. I don’t like to spend money on new cars, expensive meals out, or lifestyle inflation. But, when it comes to spending money on experiences, making memories, or my boy-girl twins (the beans) I’m willing to make bigger investments here and there. To me, making memories with my family and taking care of the beans are the most important things in my life. This is how I choose to spend my money – not on “stuff” but on memories. With that said, when I got pregnant last year, I knew that I wanted the full experience of newborn photos and possibly even a birth video. I also knew that these things would not come cheap at all. In fact, paying for professional photography and videography is often one of the largest and most under-budgeted expenses for life events, like weddings and births.   Newborn Photos and Video Costs   When I began looking for a newborn photographer, it was very tempting for me to try to be frugal about it. I wanted to get photos taken, but I didn’t want to spend the […]

Our new baby has changed our life: The Saturday Weekend Review #88

A BABY HAS BEEN BORN   I’ve received lots of emails from the fans wondering if our baby had arrived and he has! Yes, we have a son who I will call baby CBB and he’s adorable with chubby cheeks, long fingers and a huge appetite. Baby boy names are just as difficult to figure out as is a baby girl’s name. His real name is a biblical name which took forever for us to agree on. It’s not easy coming up with a baby name that both parents like but in the end it worked out for us. Everyone says he looks like me and I agree especially his facial features and feet. I’m not sure if he will have my green eyes as that takes time. As new parents we are learning every single day and we are making mistakes and learning from them. I never expected being a parent to be a walk in the park but there is a certain rush of energy you get when you know that you are a little one’s life-line.   Baby expenses   Just the other day we made a mad dash to Target for the second time since they […]

The costs of fertility treatments to create a miracle

A  STORY OF A COUPLES STRUGGLE   Fertility treatment centers across Canada are visited every day from couples who are struggling to conceive. Each week I find that someone is coming to the blog looking for answers on the costs of fertility treatments, ovulation tests, what infertility is, fertility calendars, fertility calculators and so on. The reality is there are not always any real answers and the doctors will put you through a series of tests and medications that will cost you out-of-pocket if you don’t have the benefits coverage to pay. Many couples will go into debt or use their life savings for an ounce of hope and stop at nothing from re-mortgaging their homes, borrowing money or using credit cards to fund fertility treatments. Sadly, not every treatment has a happy ending and costs can mount up month after month, year after year. If both your fallopian tubes are blocked In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is not covered under OHIP but the province of Ontario will cover a portion of the costs of IVF but when they say a portion it’s a small portion. Update: Oct 1, 2015 If you are under the age of 43 treatment for IVF […]

Life Events: Preparing your baby budget

BUDGETING FOR YOUR NEW BABY   First time parents are not going to be shocked to learn that bringing their baby into this world is going to cost them some money. Think of everything that you use to care for yourself in a day, then keep adding to that list diapers, formula and so on.  Having worked these costs into your budget and possibly adding some new categories to your baby budget such as baby categories will help to ease some of the stress of just how much of money you will spend. If you don’t have a budget you can download Mr.CBB’s free excel budget spreadsheet which has a sheet for every month of the year and you can customize categories as you need. As a mom of two children I can safely say that I’ve learned what I need to buy and what I don’t need to buy over the years but the final call is up to you. Being informed is the first step in preparing for the arrival of your baby. How to save money when having a baby? That’s a good question because the expenses of having a baby can grow exponentially if you aren’t […]

Cloth Diapers vs. Disposable Diapers And Your Baby Budget

By: Katrina Deciding whether cloth diapers or disposable diapers are right for your baby budget takes some research. The more you plan the better you will be able to make informed decisions before your baby arrives. Easier said than done, I know I was once in that position and with so much information in books and online it’s hard to figure things out. Sometimes testing out products is the way to go and the only way you will know what’s right for you and your baby. That’s probably why I like to get free product samples because it gives me a chance to use products before I purchase them. Just don’t give up as easy as  I did when it comes to deciding on which diapers to choose. When the pregnancy test confirms you are pregnant all sorts of new emotions and thoughts scatter in you mind because you now have to think about a baby. A couple of weeks after my son was born my mom convinced me to give cloth diapers a try. We went to a local baby store to research the cost of cloth diapers and more about how they might work for my baby. I learned one […]
