Daddy, how much do you make an hour? : The Saturday Weekend Review #160

IS THE MONEY REALLY WORTH IT TO YOU?   Sometimes kids come up with the strangest requests when talking to their parents but when your child is begging you for attention you know that something must change. Becoming a daddy to a little boy was something I never expected would happen because doctors said we had under a 1% chance of getting pregnant, but we did and my life has changed so much. Our lives have changed, but for the better because we have this amazing little guy in our lives who makes us smile every day. When my wife was in the hospital I took care of our son day and night because of medications she was taking plus she was pumping breast milk around the clock as our son could not latch on because of an upper lip tie and tongue tie . It was a long week in the hospital but in that week I bonded with our son experiencing love in a way I never thought was possible for a child. Those little hands, those big eyes and that smile captured me in a way I never thought possible. What was this love I was feeling? […]

A Workforce shortage is not easy on staff : February 2015 Budget Update

MONEY TALKS IF YOU HAVE TIME TO EARN IT   Have you ever worked somewhere and for whatever reason the organization has a workforce shortage? Some people wish they could get more hours to earn some over-time pay because extra money is always nice in the bank account. Others may cringe at the thought of working more than they have to, especially if they are paid salary with no-overtime pay. Not everyone lives to earn money because there’s more to life than just work. Being tired all the time is tough and for some people working too much can bring on bouts of depression. Some people just don’t know how to say no they can’t work because they have other obligations. It may even break down a relationship. In my line of work we have workforce shortages happen occasionally especially since you can’t just hire anyone to fill such a demanding role. There really is no shortage of work or unemployment in my field because of the options we have which makes it equally as frustrating. This just means there are more vacancies than qualified people to fill the job. I don’t talk about what I do to protect my […]

What pushes people over the edge financially?

FALLING ON HARD TIMES…   We all know someone who has struggled financially at some point in their lives and although it’s not easy to stay above the water how some people handle it is shocking. It seems like each time September rolls around the media is filled with articles about people who are getting into trouble with the law for reasons relating to money. Financially holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas can be a tough time for people who struggle with their money. Many struggle in silence. It’s no wonder talking about personal finance is taboo especially if people are ashamed of their debt load. This time of year it seems as if we hear more about thefts, robberies, fraud and scams leading into the Christmas holiday. Just the other day on Facebook my wife read a message on a group board from a mom advising other moms to make sure they lock their doors and take their gifts inside as someone had broken into her car and she lost everything. It only took me a few minutes online this morning to read another article about a couple who faked a pregnancy so they could steal products from an […]

Is there truth to less stress with financial freedom?

FREEDOM IS DEFINED BY YOU   Financial freedom means lots of things to many people and although everyone has their thoughts on what life is like without any debt for some it’s not all that it’s cracked up to be. What would it take in order for you to take your stress financially from one level to the next? Would you have to pay off your credit cards, all of your debt, your mortgage or simply just be able to live a comfortable life while paying off your debts? In a conversation with a colleague the other day he brought up a friend of his who just built a new house that he paid cash for, his wife doesn’t work and they have no debt. Top that off with a well-paying job so that must mean his life is all roses, right? Wrong. We don’t know that. He seemed jealous to be honest especially when he said “it must be nice to live a stress free life” which made me wonder why people think that debt=stress. I’ve had people we know think that I must make lots of money with the careers I hold but what they don’t know is […]

How we became mortgage free in five years

THE SECRET IS…THERE IS NO SECRET!   Becoming mortgage free is not an easy task so I won’t make it out to be something that it’s not. In fact many things have led to us becoming mortgage free in 5 years which I want to discuss with you today since many of you have emailed me. Ever since I blogged about wanting to pay off the mortgage early I’ve had fans email me wanting to know if there were any secrets. I thought I’d wait until we actually became mortgage free to fill you in just how we did it. No, we didn’t win the lottery or get money from family or friends we earned every last bit of it. If you read our net worth update for April last week you already know that we were excited to tell everyone that we were finally saying good-bye to the mortgage payment. I promised you I’d let you know what we did and what problems we met along the way. I thought the best way would be to get my good friend Michael Anthony Lloyd a mortgage expert who blogs at www.homehappy.ca and has blogged here before to share a bit […]

Are you envious of others’ success in life?

STOP THE GREEN EYED MONSTER   Envious definition for me means that someone wishes they could have your success but they just need to find their own path to reach their goals.  The minute your friends Facebook status goes up and says they got a new job, a new car or are in a new relationship do you get upset that it’s not you? Do you question why nothing good ever happens to you? Are you feeling jealous of other people’s success? Don’t be but if you answered no I’d say you are telling a lie because every one of us a tiny bit of envy towards something. It’s how we handle that envy that matters the most. No one likes to feel as if they failed at life and that they have no other options but to accept what they have been given. I think that we can do anything we want with this one life we are given if we find a way to make our dreams come true. Sometimes all you need is a positive boost from a friend or someone who believes in you and before you know it you will land your dream job. Never […]

Is it wise to stay home and pay off my student debts?

I WANT, I WANT, I WANT   Ah, the student debt fever doesn’t hit until school is done and reality hits the young adults of today. End of the school year 2014 is quickly approaching which means many graduates will be free from their education but not from their student debts. Today’s post is based on a question in the CBB mailbox from a student fan who was looking to me and all of you for some advice on what he/she should do after University because of student debt load. It’s funny how many people when given lump sums of money or money in general will live in the moment especially if they don’t have any savings to back them up. The feeling of happiness that money brings to most people overrides anything that will happen after the fact such as paying it back. I know a friend of ours who year after year gets in a financial bind and has to get a loan from whoever is silly enough to give it to them. In the months leading up to actually finding someone to give them a loan to pay off their debt they are miserable, have no money […]

Get Out Of Bed And Make That Change

Picture the lazy weekend morning: The sun is bright, the day is young, and you’re in bed. For many of us, myself included, the temptation to stay in bed and enjoy the comforts of sleep and warm blankets is easy to do. It’s simple to enjoy the moment, to be still and content. I’m pretty sure that even those with uncomfortable beds or lumpy pillows enjoy these lazy moments and would rather stay in bed than confront the inertia of the day. Similarly, for many people, it’s easy and comforting to go to the same job every day, to know what to expect, and to go with the flow. Even when they are not happy with their career or their co-workers, it’s easier to stick with what is familiar. Change is scary. For me, the fluffy pillow was the four weeks of vacation I received each year. The warm, cozy bed was the defined benefit pension that I could expect to receive at the end of the road. The relaxing state of wakefulness that we experience in the morning was the comforting knowledge that each day, I would do similar tasks with the same people and collect my salary twice a month. But […]
