Budget Smarts: Eating Right for a healthy life

HEALTHY OPTIONS MADE EASY   Having budget smarts doesn’t mean you have to have lots of money in the bank all it means is that you are doing whatever it takes to provide for yourself the best way you can while spending less than you earn along the way. Whether you are wanting to lose, gain or maintain weight, increase your energy or simply just live a healthy life, making good choices when it comes to the foods you eat is important. Healthy eating may be expensive so they say, but it doesn’t have to be. Even though I love my vegetables, I have to admit that making healthy choices when it comes to food is something I have not always been the best at and if you ask my mom she will tell you (as she tells me often) that she thinks I don’t eat enough. I sit down every night and have dinner with my kids but during the day when I am constantly on-the-go eating seems to sometimes be easily forgotten. These last few months I have been doing some research trying to improve my eating habits as well as eating more often. I thought I would […]

Chickpea Coconut Flax Chocolate Chip Cookies

What’s Hiding In Your Cookie? I know what you are thinking, cookies made with chickpeas sound disgusting but the truth is far from that. You know from previous posts that I am a chickpea fan and will use all kinds of chick peas to create recipes for our menu plan. These are the crazy cookies of the year for me I think but they work and I’m sure once you make them you will agree that you can hardly taste chickpeas at all in the cookie. The best thing is that it’s a cookie recipe for kids and they won’t even know they are eating healthy chickpeas in their favourite chocolate chip cookies. Where did my crazy cookie idea come from? As I was getting ready to cook my dry chickpeas in the crockpot I had this thought about making cookies with chickpeas. There was something about the colour and texture of the mashed chickpea that reminded me of what the batter for chocolate chip cookies looked like. That’s when the bright idea hit me to try and create cookies with chickpeas. I’m like to make a mess in the kitchen exploring new foods so why not give it a […]

Mr.CBB’s crispy baked avocado fries with dip

Anything Is Possible With Your Imagination Of course you can make beautiful green fries with an avocado, if you use your imagination. I am a huge fan of the avocado and try and scoop them up when they go on sale at the grocery store. My homemade guacamole dip is a popular tangy party dip around our house and often gets top priority when we throw a get-together for our friends. What is an avocado? If you are not familiar with the avocado they are native to Central Mexico where they grow in abundance and also known as an “alligator pear”. Cultivated in Mediterranean and tropical climates the avocado boasts a green flesh that has a texture similar to butter. You can even grow avocado from the unrefrigerated pit indoors which will sprout but will not produce fruit, rather a decorative tree that you can prune. Grafting from a fruit bearing tree may help speed up the maturity process of an avocado tree. If you want a fruit bearing tree you would have to have more than one tree to cultivate for cross-pollination to happen, as well as plenty of sun. This process may take many years. Either way, just to […]

grocery game monthly challenge

The Grocery Game Challenge May 20-26,2013 #3: Eating Too Much Food

When I started The Grocery Game Challenge last year we were stocking up on lots of food and soon realized that we were buying too much food. If you stare at the food in your house and know that it’s been there for ages, you’re likely buying too much. If you are a regular reader of my blog you know that I quit smoking as well last year and since then we’ve learned lots about our eating habits. Different people require different foods depending on their personal circumstances. We can easily see grocery budgets go up in expenses but with time we can also see that if we stop eating too much food we can further reduce those costs. Purchasing groceries on a budget means you will plan what you are purchasing and learn how to effectively use the foods you buy to create meals to fit your lifestyle. Just recently with the wife going on a  low GI diet we both noticed that it wasn’t so much what we were eating as we generally eat very healthy. The problem was more so in the fact we were eating too much food. In a conversation with our friend who is […]
