The Grocery Game Challenge #4 January 21-27 Make Your Own Path!

dairy products

The Grocery Game Challenge is one post each week where you get to peek inside my grocery cart to see what deals of the week were found and whether sticking to the grocery budget was achieved. I truly am motivated by this challenge not only to control our grocery budget but also to continue to create new, homemade frugal recipes in the kitchen. I want to thank the fans who continue to post their grocery shops each week with me. Canadian Budget Binder is one year old today Jan, 22, 2013 so please help me spread the word about our little group of savers and strive for another successful year of saving money in our budgets. A big welcome to all the new 2013 fans, this is a very welcoming place to start your journey.

Inspiration

When I was visiting my friend Annetta Powell’s Facebook page I read an inspiring quote on her wall that had me thinking.

Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. – Harold R. McAlindon

It made me realize that we can’t always see far down the road nor can we just keep walking the same path. So, from today we will continue to make our own path and strive for continuous improvement in our lives and I encourage you to do the same, unleash the unfamiliar. If there is something that you want to happen or you want to learn, break free and do it. Don’t wait until the path is clear,  make your own path because the time is right now. When others find your path they too may want to walk it but teach and encourage them to follow their own route and leave a trail. A wise person may share their path but won’t always hold your hand.

What are you doing to create your own path?

We loaded up on dairy this week namely cheese at Metro because of the sale and we ran out at home. We have enough cheese now for a few months.

The Grocery Game Challenge Dec 17-23,2012 Hot Stuff That Tabasco!

Tabasco Christmas Gift

Tabasco Christmas Gift

I’m adding a little spice to the Grocery Game Challenge! Tabasco has been so nice to send me this nifty Christmas gift set that I won from Facebook. It came with around 10 coupons for $1.00 off any Tabasco and 10 little bottles of  Tabasco in red velvet bags perfect for a stocking stuffer. Thanks Tabasco Canada! I’ll be sure to pass these along to any Winners in the Grocery Game Challenge.

  • ENTER to WIN HERE>$100 CASH through PayPal or an AMAZON Gift Card! Contest Ends Dec 28,2012. Good Luck

It seems many grocery game challenge fans believe their grocery budget has been shot to the moon and back this month and you know what, it has for many. The lesson we learned this year was that we need to make some changes to our grocery budget including Christmas and stockpiling using coupons or simply great deals we find. Having posted our shops all year we will have a better idea for 2013 how much money we spent in 2012 and what we should set our budget at. We do know for certain that if we spend more one month that we WILL carry that overage to the next month to make up for it. There’s no point going over some months and pretending that the end of year figure will still be what we originally budgeted because that will not be the case. In 2013 there will be no room for excuses as we are getting down and dirty with our budget. The grocery game players who have been with me all year-long know where they need to improve and what they need to do to get a better handle on the next biggest expense aside from the rent or mortgage.

  • What are your 2013 Grocery Game Goals? ie: No shop week, stay out of stores, PM more, use coupons etc~
  • How will you motivate family members to get on board with your budget?
  • Will you lower your budget or add more to your budget?

Also: What suggestions/improvements do you have for The Grocery Game Challenge? Please email me with your thoughts so we can make this challenge even better!! I really want to gain more attention with this so we can bring in more fans to help with the grocery budget and gain back control!!

Share them with all of us so we can help you stick to them!!! I’ll be posting our goals in the first post of Jan 2013 Grocery Game Challenge!!

Down to the Nitty Gritty for this week! It was basically a no-shop week for us but we needed some milk.

The Grocery Game Challenge-Sept 24-Sept 30, 2012~ It’s Fall!

The Grocery Game Challenge and Canadian Couponing go hand in hand because we know that using coupons we can lower our grocery budget significantly. We also know that Canadian Coupons can come from various outlets such as Canadian coupons from tear pads, mailed Canadian coupons, printable Canadian coupons, Canadian insert coupons etc. The point I wish to stress is to keep your eyes open for coupons and don’t be shy to ask for them. The savings from one product may off-set the cost on another product that might cost you out the nose.

Now that the Fall is here don’t forget that shops may put end of season products on offer and now is the best time to stock up for next year. We often buy in bulk when we see the opportunity or an end of season sale because in the long run it will save us money in our grocery budget or our overall budget. The hard part is sticking to the monthly budget while buying bulk items which can be a challenge and where most people fail. They fail to see that although they are getting deals and using coupons they are STILL spending more than they earn or more than they have budgeted.

If you don’t know what you are spending every month, if you are not documenting it, come post your shop. If you want to know how to start saving money on groceries in Canada post your shops. I’m betting after one month you will see, just like we did last year how much MORE we were spending rather than saving even with coupons.

Happy Fall and enjoy all the beautiful colours.

With the gardening season coming to an end we have so many vegetables from our garden we haven’t had to purchase too many. I’m hoping from now until December we can stick to the budget and we will need all of your support just like I give to you each week. So please motivate and inspire not only yourselves but me to only spend what we have in our grocery budget-Mr.CBB

The Grocery Game Challenge June 4-10 Name Your Price?

We’re back with a new month and a new Grocery Game Challenge.. can you believe it’s June already? This month I want to talk about prices and what you are willing to pay for a product.  Name your price… what are you willing to pay for a product to take it home for your family. Since Mrs.CBB and I have been using coupons and have stockpiled many items we now know what a good price is and what a not so good price is. Does this hamper our grocery shops? Sometimes it does especially when an item we need is not on sale nor do we have a coupon. Sales cycles happen every few months so you start to know what items will be on sale and when.

Unfortunately when you need something, you simply can’t wait a few months down the line until the next $dollar sale happens. Other options for us is to wait until Shoppers Drug Mart has a 20x points event or  Spend $75 get 18,500 points. Although most will say Shoppers Drug Mart is overpriced to begin with if you shop wise on these bonus days you can come out ahead. Since we know pretty much these events happen monthly we will try and stretch our needs until we can purchase them for points.

If we have to pay full price for an item we might as well get more bang for our buck with the Optimum Points Program.  We accumulate points from what we believe is the most lucrative points program in Canada today. We also take the opportunity to load up on everyday essentials like;

  • milk
  • eggs
  • butter
  • cream
  • coffee
  • cheese
  • yogurt

etc especially if they are on offer during these events like they were yesterday.  If you know you will use it at some point in the month you might as well buy what you will use and get points back. We simply will only do the shop if most of what we need is already on sale and comparable to sales at other shops.

We’ve had some great success with The Grocery Game Challenge and hope this month will be better than the last. We went over budget in May simply because of a forgotten receipt- a big no, no.  Earlier this week our friend Maggie at Square Pennies posted a guest post I wrote detailing The Grocery Game Challenge which I encourage you to read. The post is called The Grocery Game Challenge and Our Grocery Budget. I hope to encourage others from all over the world to hop aboard and post their shops along with Mrs. CBB and I!

To simplify your shopping experience our friends at SaveBigLiveBetter provides us with weekly coupon match-ups June 1-7 for all of our fans. Simply look at the shops you might go to and she pairs up the deals with coupons that are in circulation around Canada. She’s done all the work for you, and all you need to do, is make your list, and shop…. spend less than your budget! Then come back when you are all done shopping for the week and post it all, right here in the comment section… what are you waiting for…. start saving today!
