grocery game monthly challenge

15 Copycat Recipes To Make At Home : The Grocery Game Challenge 2017 #4 Aug 21-27

Copycat Recipes Without The Price-tag May Lure Consumers To Put On An Apron.   One of the main reasons people eat out is convenience either because of time barriers or lack of meal planning at home. If you don’t know it already eating out can drastically alter your monthly budget especially if you are spending more time at the restaurants then you are at the grocery store. How many times have you seen an advert on the television or in a magazine for food and said, “I want to try that”, probably quite a few times. I know because I do that quite often, the art of marketing does work. Factor in the costs of tips and drinks for the meal and you’ve just spent enough for a weeks worth of groceries for one meal. Consider how much it costs to make a batch of your favourite muffins, subs or take-out chili in comparison to drive-thru. What doesn’t work is prices which keeps us at home working on ways to create mouth-watering meals in our kitchen. Grocery shopping for some people is just B.O.R.I.N.G but I don’t know many people who shop to party. Of course it’s not the most […]

Fast food restaurants are a dime a dozen: PF Weekly Grab a brew #60

A LOST BUSINESS IDENTITY CAN COST $   It’s no secret that I use my allowance to buy coffee at fast food outlets like Tim Horton’s or McDonald’s but I don’t ever invest in much more. Some people live and breathe the products that are new at their favourite fast food outlets but in the past few years it’s become overwhelming. There are changes though coming to one of the most popular coffee giants, Tim Horton’s. You may notice some of your favourites missing from the list and ice-cream is on it’s way out the door.   Business model   I don’t know the in’s and out’s of the fast food industry but as a consumer watching in from the outside my feedback is just as important. I’ve participated in many focus groups for the fast food industry over the years and to be honest with you things have changed dramatically. Sure we get fast food back in the UK and although I haven’t been home for about 6 years it’s hard to say what’s changed but what I do know is competition among the restaurants in this industry is cut-throat. It’s about who has the healthiest fast food menu […]

Kids Eat Free- Is it a restaurant lure to eat out targeting parents?

Is There Really Such A Thing As Free Food? Everyone likes to go out to eat once in a while even the frugal minded budget wielding fanatics like us. We don’t have any kids to get pulled in by marketing gimmicks so we tap into any other discounts we can get. Even a good coupon goes a long way for a once a year meal out on the town so don’t be afraid to save yourself a few dollars if you can. It’s really the kids that are what I call the cash cow for some of these establishments as well as the booze on their slow nights of the week.  Some parents have a hard time saying no to their kids when they want something and of course anyone who can make money from the crying child or the child that ‘wants’ they will be in there faster than you can shake a stick. Some may say that eating out and childhood obesity go hand in hand but that’s not always the case. I believe that we must learn the word “moderation” and be mindful of it when we put food in our mouth. I do know that eating […]

Spending less: Kids’ birthday parties on a budget

A Birthday That Won’t Break The Budget Spending less for a kids’ birthday party while still having fun is easier than most people think. You don’t have to spend like the “Party Mamas” (yes the Slice TV program) and have the event catered in with the entire circus, Justin Bieber and custom-made attire for your child to make memories that last a life-time. Budgeting for your kids’ birthday party is something you can easily plan into your monthly budget so you don’t have to dig into your emergency savings or put the birthday party on a credit card. We recently celebrated my daughters’ 3rd birthday this past weekend and to save money I planned a private party well in advance. We had friends and family over for the afternoon to enjoy a backyard barbecue and no birthday is complete without cake and ice-cream. I had planned some outdoor activities for the kids but unfortunately there was thunder and the threat of rain all day which put a hold on any outdoor fun. I still grilled burgers and hot dogs but we ate inside. The kids ended up playing on the new scooter my daughter received for a gift. They took turns going from […]
