This Simple Living Concept Allows Us To Save Thousands

MOTIVATE YOUR FINANCIAL VENTURES BY MOVING FORWARD   Simple living doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy all the frosting that life has to offer in order to live a better today for an amazing tomorrow. You can! Just about everything we do today will in part affect the outcome of our financial future and some people worry about whether they have done enough to get them to the finish line. I’ve blogged for a few years now and ever since the beginning there has been one simple living concept that I have encompassed our entire financial path around because it works, a budget. The concept of budgeting for us revolves around this saying which I created years ago which is also pasted on our refrigerator door. It’s not about how much money you make it’s how you save it – Mr.CBB I received an email from a reader who is looking for some insight about investing and her financial future and motivation about not finding this blog earlier. Dear Mr. CBB, About 9 yrs ago I moved from Europe to Canada. It was always a big dream for me to live abroad and when I turned 30 I realized my […]

How we cash in on unused clutter in the winter

EVERYTHING HOLDS VALUE   Don’t underestimate the value of an item because what you may consider junk another may consider a treasure. It’s cold outside especially if you are living in Canada like us. There’s no denying the temperatures in 2014 are by far the coldest we’ve had in a long time.   Clear the clutter   It seems almost everyone is complaining about being stuck indoors and having nothing to do so how about winter pre-spring cleaning around the house? Yes you read that right! I’m always getting emails or fans asking, “How can I make extra money to pay down debt?”. Well sometimes the easiest and fastest answer is right in your own home. There’s no point sitting around the house this winter doing nothing if you have piles of potential cash in unused clutter sitting around your house. Make the most of your clutter and sell it for a nice profit that you can put into your emergency savings or use the money you earn for whatever financial decisions are important to you.   The clear-out   How do you begin to clear out clutter? That’s easy. Every successful clutter clear-out starts with a plan so know […]

How to get what you pay for when buying online

DON’T REGRET YOUR PURCHASES   If you fail to take a few minutes to read over the small print you might just be surprised what you are actually buying. With the holidays fast approaching and many people scrambling to buy their Christmas gifts many people buy online, especially if they can score a great deal. We often talk about how we like to sometimes buy online vs. in-store whether from Kijiji or picking up the odd items on Ebay or Amazon but with that comes caution when spending our money. Buying online items is not something new and it’s well secure for the most part but what happens when the buyer is the person who is trying to scam you out of money even though it’s plain to see you are getting what you pay for. I was reading a Yahoo post the other day about a 19-year-old guy from the UK of all places who was hoping to get his hands on the new X-Box One that was recently released. He also has a 4-year-old child whom he stopped at nothing to make sure he was able to get the X-Box One for but he was duped at the […]

Starting Our Frugal Garden From Seed

Gardening for some is a passion and for others just another chore. For me, enjoyment of watching something grow, mature and flower is fascinating. Plants don’t all have to be about huge flowers, they can be the focus or the backdrop or just plain useful. Every year we grow our own food in the garden, though I’ll be the first to admit we couldn’t live off the land we have, it’s more of a novelty thing. There are advantages other than cost to growing your own, the flavours are far superior and the knowledge that you didn’t spray everything in sight with chemicals. I can remember when I was growing up in England that quite a lot of people had apple trees in their back gardens the obligatory rhubarb patch as well as a sprinkling of gooseberry bushes, damson trees and in rough open space you could find blackberries by the thousand. Coming home from school at a young age we would often scoff free damsons off some old ladies tree. I do believe it was called “scrumping”, though that term is more synonymous with stealing apples off a tree. I’m sure growing up in an area that was dominated by old Victorian houses helped as it provided […]

Dumpster Diving~The Top 5 Rules For Finding The Good Free Stuff!

Photo Credit: thephotoholic/freedigitalphotos.net Guest Post: Karen Dumpster Diving You know there are a lot of negative connotations with dumpster diving and I know I definitely always had issues with this myself. As I’ve gotten older and as the US economy has gotten tougher I have learned to be more resourceful of course not only that but my husband has pleasantly surprised me over time with some amazing dumpster finds. This is a regular feature on my blog Lil’ Suburban Homestead’s site that we share our latest dumpster diving finds and it has become popular.  I mean, Who Doesn’t Like Free? It’s Pickin Time! I will admit we even had our own family members in somewhat disbelief of the great finds we have found until they have been out with us when it has happened. I am not going to claim to be the dumpster diving diva although I do know how to dive. While I love to join in on dumpster diving adventures I am often not as mobile because of my job.  I work for the school system in Coastal North Carolina so I’m trapped in a building all day long. It’s my husband who finds the good dumpster diving […]

Mr.CBB’s Cream Filled Homemade Twinkie Style Cakes

Well, after hearing about the closing of Twinkie Brands in Irving, Texas in the USA the other day I wondered about these little delights that everyone is going mad over. Yes, they are still making the Twinkies in Canada but I’ve never had one in me life. I remember on Facebook the fans were talking about Joe Louis and I had no idea what they were going on about. Luckily for them I’m learning more the longer I live in Canada. So everyone wants to get their hands on the Twinkie in the USA, mad, well it’s pretty nutty if you ask me.  After a mate of mine who lives in the USA told me to check out Ebay last night I nearly fell over after what I saw. You remember the famous tickle me Elmo that everyone thought they could make a buck from selling them on Ebay? Well move over Elmo, Twinkie is taking top spot this year. Boxes and I mean boxes of these cream filled Twinkie cakes are showing up on EBAY selling for absurd amounts of money.  I’m still wondering who in their right mind is that hungry for a $10,000.00 box of Twinkies. What has this […]
