Divorce is something that can have a lasting impact on your finances and subsequently on your quality of life. Even if divorce is amicable, legal fees can quickly spiral out of control in dividing the family assets. You probably saved money and made a retirement plan based on the assumption that there will be two people enjoying the family nest egg in the golden years. However, in divorce the savings will end up being divided among two households, which means less money for both of you. Marriage and Common-law partnerships needs to be looked after and time need to be spent nurturing the relationship and taking care of each other. Since at the end of the day it is both a romantic and a business relationship. This […]

Your Texting Addiction Could Cost You Your Job : The Saturday Weekend Review : #162

LEAVE YOUR SMARTPHONE ALONE   Texting, hail to the new normal of our world where looking down is more important than life itself. Is texting making you less human? For many people the answer is yes because the smartphone addiction is a hard habit to break. Why oh why have we not learned that texting is an evil that can instantly cost you your life, someone else’s life or your job. Do you ever catch yourself saying this? It will never happen to me. I will never get caught. No one is watching. It was only a second. It takes only a second, to die or get injured. One second! You can never take that second back. As a new parent I’m skeptical to leave our son with anyone because these days I wonder what kind of care he would get. I’m sure I’ll get over it but any parent will tell you they worry about their child even when they are not with them. If you bring your child to daycare or any other activity that requires someone to watch your child you want to make sure they are 100% protected from harm. Accidents do happen but when they […]

10 Tips to find employment that suits your budget and lifestyle

HOT JOBS: ARE THEY HARD TO FIND?   Most people don’t want to work in a minimum wage job the rest of their lives. Having further education or skills should help people find meaningful employment that earns more money. Finding employment that will earn you enough money to balance your budget doesn’t have to be difficult as long as you follow simple rules to get you the dream job you deserve. You may not find full-time employment in your dream job instantly but that’s fine as long as you get your foot in the door. Right now I’m working part-time in my dream job and they’ve already asked if I’d be interested in full-time just 2 years later. So many people put off working an extra part-time job just to squeeze their way in but sometimes you have to give up something to get in the door. I had to give up having days off and spending time with my family but I know that it will benefit us in the long run when I can be home quite a bit more. The best part is I am earning a great income while doing this and it doesn’t even feel […]

A Workforce shortage is not easy on staff : February 2015 Budget Update

MONEY TALKS IF YOU HAVE TIME TO EARN IT   Have you ever worked somewhere and for whatever reason the organization has a workforce shortage? Some people wish they could get more hours to earn some over-time pay because extra money is always nice in the bank account. Others may cringe at the thought of working more than they have to, especially if they are paid salary with no-overtime pay. Not everyone lives to earn money because there’s more to life than just work. Being tired all the time is tough and for some people working too much can bring on bouts of depression. Some people just don’t know how to say no they can’t work because they have other obligations. It may even break down a relationship. In my line of work we have workforce shortages happen occasionally especially since you can’t just hire anyone to fill such a demanding role. There really is no shortage of work or unemployment in my field because of the options we have which makes it equally as frustrating. This just means there are more vacancies than qualified people to fill the job. I don’t talk about what I do to protect my […]

Can you afford to take a full day off from work?

PAYING THE BILLS TAKES MONEY   In order to take a full day off from work for most people that means an entire day’s loss of income. That can be tough for any budget but there are times when it must be done. Unless your employer has provided you with stellar benefits or a contract that states your days off are paid sick days you might be shaking your head, no you can’t afford to take a full day off. You may say, yes you can afford to take a full day off because you have money saved up in the event that you need to take a day off and it won’t affect your budget too much. That’s great. Some employees are lucky they can carry over their sick days, bank them or get paid out for them but you must read the provisions of your contract with your employer to know what is covered. If you are not sure contact your human resources department or your benefits company for a more in-depth explanation. It’s better to know rather than to guess.   Full day off   Not everyone can afford to take a full day off from work […]

The Saturday Weekend Review #31: Homeless and living on $8.00 a day

A Few Dollars Can Go Further Than You Ever Imagined I don’t believe many people think about life as a homeless person, who would unless you were forced to. I honestly can’t imagine what life is like for homeless people but what I do know is many are skilled and many just want someone to give them a chance. There are times when people give up on themselves because others give up on them. Although we should fight for what we want sometimes the war is won and it’s hard to get back what you’ve lost without a miracle or perseverance of sorts. Homelessness is potentially caused for many reasons, one being lack of employment and somewhere to live. I was touched by kindness this morning when I watched a video on You Tube where a couple of guys who prank people and share it on their channel called Vitalyzd TV gave a homeless man a full makeover.  This was no prank though, it was real and it was uplifting for many people to watch, over 3 million so far on You Tube. To be honest I wasn’t going to watch it but something compelled me to just check it out. […]

Buying my first property: Was I too young?

Minimum Pay For Maximum Workload I bought my first property at the age of twenty-one even though some of my friends thought I was too young and crazy. I loved to work hard and equally play hard afterwards. It would have been comparable if I were to buy my first condo here in Canada or flat for those of a British background. I wanted to buy vs rent because with my down-payment I knew that my mortgage would be less than rent. My parents already had a few homes on the go and were renting them out so the mortgage would pay for themselves. It was the best decision they ever made, investing in real estate. They are still enjoying the benefits today of those mortgage-free homes and rental income. Somehow I wanted in on the action early so off I went and I found my first home fresh out of University. How much do you need to buy a home? More than I bargained for and many people suffer because they fail to plan. I was almost one of those people. Living pay to pay Contrary to popular belief, I know what waiting for the next chunk of hard-earned money […]
