A Wage Increase Is Only Instant Gratification On Paper : Our Net Worth Update October 2017 (+0.79%)

BUILDING WEALTH AND DEBT FREEDOM GOES BEYOND A WAGE INCREASE   Unless you get a wage increase that is far beyond your norm the only gratification most people get is seeing the bigger number on their pay cheque. Even then if you’re not putting that wage increase to work you’re hiring and firing your own staff costing your more money in the long run. Reality is that without doing something with that money to help increase your net worth it won’t make a blind bit of difference. This perspective of a wage increase simply leaves you right back where you started. November is financial literacy month and I wanted to take a few minutes to talk about why a wage or salary increase isn’t always the answer to our financial problems.   You have to start somewhere   ** Let that be your motivation for the day, month, year ** You may not be in debt but you’re certainly not going to get ahead financially if you aren’t making changes to the way you manage it. The key: Financial Literacy. If you’re in the negative you may still be in the negative but climbing out from the hole. You’re still […]

6 Strategic Money Management Motivators To Keep Us Focused : October Net Worth Update (+0.55%)

THREE M’S THAT CAN CHANGE THE WAY YOU LOOK AT YOUR MONEY FOREVER.   Budget your money, Budget your money, Save, Save, Save we are told, but that’s only a portion of the solution to what so many people are feeling when it comes to feeling the financial crunch. Financial affairs should always be part of your daily routine however just because you use a budget doesn’t mean you will become successful at running it. It takes far more work than just budgeting to achieve your financial goals. In fact it takes a hell of a lot of work outside of the spreadsheet and whether your committed or not will show in the numbers. Let’s talk about the numbers for a moment especially since November is Financial Literacy Month across the globe. Numbers aren’t the only way you’re going to become rich. Come on now we all want to have money in the bank and being rich to you might mean you are debt free or have more than $100 in the bank. Whatever the case may be always remember that those numbers didn’t become what they are magically. They had to come from somewhere, somehow and most likely that […]

Building Wealth Starts When You Stop Making Poor Financial Decisions

You Don’t Need To Be Embarrassed By The Way You Manage Your Money If You Do It Right.   Building wealth seems to be the target for just about everyone unless you don’t mind struggling for money to pay the bills and retire comfortably. At least once a week I get an email from a fan who tells me they are tired of being broke, have lots of debt and want to start building wealth now rather than later. Not only is that a smart idea it’s the beginning of a journey back to square one where you get to clean your financial slate and do it right. Are you embarrassed by the personal finance decisions that you are making? You should be if you’re making simple mistakes that are causing you to spend more money than you should be especially when you have technology at your finger-tips. Rate comparison for everything is available to us but when it comes to financial rate comparison it takes a back seat to everything else. Related: Stop blaming the government for all of your debt problems. Not having money and surviving on a low-income or struggling with a high debt-ratio can be embarrassing […]

15 Frugal Ways To Stock Children’s Books For Your Home Library

READING IS ABSORBING INFORMATION THAT YOU CAN’T GIVE BACK   Reading DOES matter in a child’s life and should start the minute they can look into your eyes, listen with their ears or touch with their hands. We began reading to our son shortly after he came home from the hospital. Not only that but we began to play soft music throughout the day like my wife did when he was in her tummy. That might sound daft to some people but for a baby hearing their parents voice talking to them is soothing and what better way to begin than by reading a book.   Children’s Books can be expensive   Have you ever seen the prices on brand new books that have never been cracked open? Some of the prices are mind-blowing especially on children’s books. Next time you’re in a book store or if you have any children’s books at home flip them over or look in the front cover to check for prices. Shoppers who pay full retail price for children’s books only do so because they really, really want it. Sometimes it’s hard to resist those cute books that you know your son or daughter […]

Money and Finance: Why I Care About Financial Literacy

Money and Finance are two very important life topics that encompass “financial literacy” yet many people are unable to take control of what it means to them. I hear stories about those that are struggling to get to the end of the month before they run out of cash to pay the bills and others that realize that learning about money is the only way to go. April is Financial Literacy Awareness month and learning money management skills and how to budget money is only the beginning. There are a host of financial literacy topics that are available to those wanting to find ways to save money as adults and teaching youth financial literacy to their children all over the internet. There is no shame in not knowing but wanting to learn, there is no shame about why you are in debt, there is no shame in what others think of you. Find the strength to enjoy the small things and work towards a brighter future by taking the initiative to build your knowledge of what you desire in life. There are so many people who wonder if they will ever know “how to learn to save money” but don’t know where to […]

PF Weekly Reading List #15- Bieber Wants To Help Your Kids “Get Money”

Justin Bieber and financial literacy who would have thought that he would want to teach teens how to “get money”. I almost thought I was seeing things for a moment when reading the news this morning but turns out my coffee was indeed strong enough. I’m not a Belieber but I am a believer in spreading the word about financial literacy. Bieber has stepped up and is backing a real-time monitoring debit card for kids through a Spend Smart Payment company in an effort to spread financial literacy awareness to the teens of today. We’ve talked here at CBB about how the school system should teach kids to “get money” (in other words to understand) so they can live a life not riddled in consumer debt, and now this new type of debit card is in the spotlight. If parents struggle to talk to their kids about money this is the perfect way to bring the topic to the table but in a “cool-kid” type of way. I’ve said it more than once on this blog that “convenience costs” and that’s pretty much what this service will be, a money lesson with a convenience price tag. The card which apparently has […]

My Best Financial Tip

THE ONLY WAY UP IS TO LISTEN TO THOSE YOU WANT TO SURPASS   I could probably come up with many Financial Tips but there can only be one best tip from me. When I started writing this blog at the end of January 2012 I told you a bit about us and our journey towards debt freedom. Although we now have the money to pay our mortgage in full we have had our fair share of debts along the way. I’ve never proclaimed to be a financial guru rather just an average guy that wants to get from point A to point B with minimal fuss. I’ve learned that there are brick walls and once you get stuck in the maze it can be tough to find your way out. Don’t hang your head in despair, where there’s a will there’s a way. Sometimes the solutions may not be the optimal choice but we learn from our experiences and do our best to not let them happen again. I’ve met many people who take the time to set goals yet they are so unrealistic even I would fail at them. Today I’m blogging for financial literacy which is led by Glenn Cooke of […]

Canadian Budget Binder- The Saturday Weekend Review #4 November

Mr.CBB’s  Saturday Weekend Review It’s Saturday already and let’s just say this guy has been tearing it up in the bathroom all week. No, I don’t mean I’ve been taking big dumps, or riding the wave, I mean I’ve smashed walls and made some noise! I’m in the process of renovating our sad-looking 90’s bathroom and reviving it with something “spa-like” , well at least that was the order from the Mrs. I’ve been on vacation for a couple of days now so I’ve been getting what I need to done around here. I also needed to seal the columns on the front porch.  I wanted to control any potential rotting of the wood so I’ve jazzed it up with moulding and will seal and paint it. What’s Been Happening at Canadian Budget Binder Not much to report although I’m sure I’ll have some “Big” news in the upcoming months, so hang on tight! I’m still hoping to hit the 3000 Facebook Fan mark by the end of year but we will see what happens. I have a 3000 Fan Sweepstakes posted here and on my Facebook page. The contest is sponsored by yours truly at Canadian Budget Binder and Karen […]
