15 Copycat Recipes To Make At Home : The Grocery Game Challenge 2017 #4 Aug 21-27

Copycat Recipes Without The Price-tag May Lure Consumers To Put On An Apron.   One of the main reasons people eat out is convenience either because of time barriers or lack of meal planning at home. If you don’t know it already eating out can drastically alter your monthly budget especially if you are spending more time at the restaurants then you are at the grocery store. How many times have you seen an advert on the television or in a magazine for food and said, “I want to try that”, probably quite a few times. I know because I do that quite often, the art of marketing does work. Factor in the costs of tips and drinks for the meal and you’ve just spent enough for a weeks worth of groceries for one meal. Consider how much it costs to make a batch of your favourite muffins, subs or take-out chili in comparison to drive-thru. What doesn’t work is prices which keeps us at home working on ways to create mouth-watering meals in our kitchen. Grocery shopping for some people is just B.O.R.I.N.G but I don’t know many people who shop to party. Of course it’s not the most […]

The Ultimate Frugal Student Recipe Book : The Grocery Game Challenge 2017 #3 Aug 14-20

Cheap Healthy Meals For Students In Apartments   Creating cheap healthy meals sounds impossible because we’ve been conditioned to believe that convenience foods are inexpensive and easier to make. Not true in most cases it costs more and tastes can’t be compared to homemade by a long shot. For this reason I wanted to put together the Ultimate Frugal Student Recipe Book for kids who are off to College or University and need some guidance in the recipe department. While at a backyard BBQ party our friend Judy (not her real name) has a 19-year-old daughter off to Western University in a couple of weeks. Instead of moving into residence she opted to share an apartment with two of her friends to keep costs lower for the school year. This means she won’t be part of the University meal plan and it will be her job to prepare recipes on a budget of $50 a week. Related: How much should my grocery budget be? Although her budget may seem high for some people fifty dollars is reasonable enough for anyone to whip up cheap healthy meals without being deprived. That means she won’t have to live on Ramen noodles, toast […]

Ditch These 6 Genius Grocery Sale Price Distractions : The Grocery Game Challenge 2017 #1 July 31-Aug 6

SALE PRICE DISTRACTIONS BECOME A PROBLEM WHEN THEY DON’T HAVE A PLACE ON YOUR GROCERY SHOPPING LIST.   Sale price distractions are everywhere, not just the grocery store. You only have to think back to holiday shopping and understand the power of sales and marketing. It’s easy to say yes even when you want to say no. Every once in a while I get an email from a reader who is struggling with their grocery budget. What I always find interesting is that most of the concerns are typical to most shoppers. They are not new concerns, they are just new to them and can become a burden on their monthly budget. Let’s read what CBB fan Sophie has to say about her grocery shopping dilemma and offer her some tips to get her back on track.   Super Sale Prices Equal More Money   Dear Mr.CBB, I am a single woman in her 30’s who struggles to keep her grocery budget balanced. You would think it would be easy since I’m grocery shopping for one however it’s harder. I’m a person who likes to stress eat which means I’m an easy target for sweets and snack items. My […]

Crack the Whip Potluck Etiquette For Hosts and Guests : The Grocery Game Challenge #4 July 24-30

THE RULES AND RECIPE IDEAS FOR A FUN POTLUCK PARTY   Today I want to talk about potluck do’s and don’ts and how you can have a frugal party without extra expenses. Accepting an invitation to a potluck party means that you will put some thought into the dish you plan to make. This doesn’t always happen which ends up in potluck nightmare. What is a potluck party? A potluck is a party where a host offers their home or backyard and guests bring planned dishes. Some friends host parties once a month to balance the costs of food during the summer and winter months for each other. The host typically makes the main dish but this is not a rule. The worst thing you could do for a potluck is drop by the local grocery store on your way to the party to purchase something pre-made.  That’s a no-no in my books unless you have a legit emergency where you were unable to make something. Ideally planning your potluck dish ahead of the party would make things easier.   Potluck Host Etiquette   The perfect potluck would have a variety of dishes but to achieve this the host must […]

How I Turned Grocery Shopping Into A Daddy Vacation : The Grocery Game Challenge 2017 #3 July 17-23

WHEN GROCERY SHOPPING BECOMES THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR DAY.   Parenthood is more than just having a baby, it’s about finding ways to keep sane in a busy world of dirty nappies, feedings, work and lack of sleep. Things have changed as they should since we’ve become parents especially for myself since our son wants to do everything with me. If you could imagine me coming home from work and attacked by a toddler while Mrs. CBB waves and says, “have fun” that’s how it all goes down. At times he’s like a television that has no off button but I appreciate his inclination to learn and talk non-stop from the time he wakes up until he falls asleep again. It hasn’t been until the last year or so that we are really feeling the push from dealing with the terrible two’s. I read a meme that stated how parents who go grocery shopping alone attribute the experience to a vacation. Mrs. CBB laughed because some of the other moms she chats with has said the same thing. I wanted to see if I got that same vacation feeling so I put myself up for the daddy vacation challenge. When […]

The Ultimate Guide To Simple Kitchen Downsizing : The Grocery Game Challenge 2017 #1 June 5-11

TOUR OUR KITCHEN FROM BULK TO THE MINIMALIST SLIM VERSION   Smart kitchen ideas start with an organized clean kitchen for you to prepare healthy meals without wasting time, energy and money. Look around your kitchen and think about the stuff that you have and consider the last time you’ve used it. I’ll wait here until you come back. Kitchen downsizing has become a new trend for 2017 among our circle of friends because they are feeling the dollar crunch. They aren’t buying as much and they are selling what they have too much of, us included. When looking to buy a new house your realtor may tell you to forget about the stuff the current owner has and imagine the room without it. Some homeowners hire a home staging company to help them downsize their belongings to make the home seem larger. When you buy a house the idea of enjoying that large space can easily be chopped when you start filling it up with stuff. Not only do you lose space but you create an environment for more cleaning and dust. We know from experience. We took a proactive approach the last month to tackle kitchen downsizing by […]

The Ultimate Kitchen Renovation Meal Survival Guide : The Grocery Game Challenge 2017 #5 May 29-June 4

LIVING THROUGH RENOVATIONS CAN BE TOUGH FOR MEALS BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE IF YOU PLAN AHEAD.   It won’t be long before Mrs. CBB and I start thinking about our kitchen renovation that has been in the works for 8 years. We decided to wait because it was important that we saved the money first so we could finally get our dream kitchen. When is the best time to think about beginning a kitchen renovation? Never. It sucks to live through it BUT think about the end-goal and how exciting it will be to bring your visions to life. As soon as the snow melts and the windows are opened in our house all we hear is large delivery trucks, hammers, drills, saws and plenty of renovation noise happening. That being said a kitchen renovation during any season other than winter seems to be your best bet. Since we plan to live in our home until our son graduates elementary school it seems reasonable to renovate the kitchen to suit our growing family. Right now it’s functional but needs a face-lift and a dishwasher would be nice so I can quit my side-job.   Eating out during a kitchen renovation   […]
