Crack the Whip Potluck Etiquette For Hosts and Guests : The Grocery Game Challenge #4 July 24-30

THE RULES AND RECIPE IDEAS FOR A FUN POTLUCK PARTY   Today I want to talk about potluck do’s and don’ts and how you can have a frugal party without extra expenses. Accepting an invitation to a potluck party means that you will put some thought into the dish you plan to make. This doesn’t always happen which ends up in potluck nightmare. What is a potluck party? A potluck is a party where a host offers their home or backyard and guests bring planned dishes. Some friends host parties once a month to balance the costs of food during the summer and winter months for each other. The host typically makes the main dish but this is not a rule. The worst thing you could do for a potluck is drop by the local grocery store on your way to the party to purchase something pre-made.  That’s a no-no in my books unless you have a legit emergency where you were unable to make something. Ideally planning your potluck dish ahead of the party would make things easier.   Potluck Host Etiquette   The perfect potluck would have a variety of dishes but to achieve this the host must […]

15 Grocery Savings You Might Be Missing At The Pharmacy : The Grocery Game Challenge 2017 #3 Jan 16-22

YOUR LOCAL PHARMACY MAY HAVE MORE FOOD DEALS THAN YOU’RE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF TO LOWER GROCERY COSTS.   One of the least read flyers that consumers miss out on chopping their grocery budget hands-down is at the pharmacy. When our weekly flyers would arrive Mrs. CBB handed them to me and the process I followed was to toss out the flyers we had no interest in which used to include pharmacy flyers. It was easier for me to get through the flyers of stores that were familiar to me then those little shops. Boy did I learn a lesson from that mistake. If you haven’t taken the time to look around the pharmacies in your area you might be shocked to find out they offer more than just medicine. The nearest pharmacy to us is a Shoppers Drug Mart (Pharmaprix) and a small family pharmacy located next to a doctor’s office. The main difference between the two is that the small pharmacy doesn’t carry food products like you’d find at almost all the big name pharmacies around Canada. Since being purchased for 12.4 billion by Loblaws in 2014 almost all Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacy stores have ramped up PC products […]

How To Train Your Spouse To Be A Clever Clogs Food Shopper : The Grocery Game Challenge 2016 #4 May 23-29

THERE’S NO SHAME IN LEARNING HOW TO BE A SMART SHOPPER   I’m sure that you’ve met someone who thinks they are a clever clogs when it comes to knowing everything about anything there is to know in life. Some may profess to be an expert only to lack the skills needed to complete a task such as being the household food shopper. If you’re tired of always having to do the food shopping because your spouse doesn’t want to take the time to follow your frugal lead then it’s time to get them on-board with a bit of Grocery-101. What is a clever clogs? A bit of humour in this post to get your attention but serious stuff if you are struggling to meet your grocery budget needs because you or your spouse is not participating in the process. The word clever clogs originates in the UK so it’s certainly a term I’m familiar with and now you are. If you’re child is a fan of the television cartoon Peppa Pig you’ll have heard that Edmond Elephant is a bit of a clever clogs. This means a clever clogs is someone who is too clever or commonly called a […]

When to use Negotiation Strategies at the Grocery Store: The Grocery Game Challenge #3 May 18-24, 2015

INFLUENCE TO SAVE MONEY   Negotiation skills take time and practice so don’t be shy to haggle because you won’t become the master communicator you need to get the discounts you deserve.  It may sound deceiving when you use influence to get what you want but if you use the right negotiation skills it’s a win-win for both parties. Often when we go grocery shopping there is a product we find that we are able to get reduced in price. How? If you saw a box of cereal where the box was crushed you’d likely just leave it on the shelf and find one that is not damaged. Right? Not us! Throughout the day and night there is a stock person who goes around the store to stock and find products that are damaged or close to expiry and they typically reduce the price. They don’t always find every product so it’s up to you, the consumer to make sure you negotiate the price you want to buy that product. Besides, whenever you want to buy something you should inspect it for freshness, quality and expiry if the product is required to have one. This is the only way you […]

Nielsen Homescan Canada: Shop, Scan and get Rewarded! : The Grocery Game Challenge #3 Dec 15-21,2014

HAVE YOUR SAY, ENJOY THE REWARDS!   Who thought that going shopping would be so rewarding? Believe me when I say joining the Nielsen Homescan Canada panel will open up a window of rewards to you because I’ve done it in the UK. Note: If the link to Join is closed please be patient until they open up a new campaign. This means they have reached their limit but come back to check often. Nielsen studies consumers in over 100 countries because they want to know what you like to buy! I remember the time when my wife came to the UK and we went grocery shopping together for the first time. Not only was she reading just about every product she could get her hands on (it took forever to shop with her) I was also explaining to her a little about this program I was involved in. I think it made more sense to her once I showed her my scanner and exactly what I needed to do. When we got home she wanted to help me put all the groceries away but I told her that we had to wait a moment so I could check everything […]

Should you really shop at a bulk food store? : The Grocery Game Challenge #2 Oct 6-12, 2014

THE MORE YOU BUY THE CHEAPER IT IS… OR IS IT?   Most people would assume that if they buy food from a bulk food store that it would cost less than buying at a local grocery store. I’m not just talking about a bulk food store like the Bulk Barn but also stores like Costco that people believe help slash their grocery budget. Almost two years ago when I participated in the Welfare Food Challenge I agreed that buying in bulk would help keep costs lowered for those who want to stick to a budget. It’s true as long as you are always getting the ‘best price’ for the size/amount you buy. What is also important to consider is here as well is quality of product. If you aren’t then likely the savings aren’t going to be great.   Bulk Food Store Savings   We don’t have a Costco membership which you have to pay for and factor into your overall costs. This cost can run you anywhere from $55 a year for a business membership to a $110 for an executive membership. Through the grapevine I’ve heard that if you buy a Costco gift card or one was […]
