The Grocery Game Challenge March 5-March 11/Week 2

This is our weekly grocery shop for March 5- March 11. What was your weekly shop like? Post it in the comment section of this post and you could win a monthly prize of $50 in various Canadian coupons~ see rules and regulations here. We had this weeks shop planned and knew we would spend more than the $64 a week we have budgeted for on groceries. With the Shoppers Drug Mart Spend $75 get 18,500 Optimum Points we were already over budget. A fan asked what we do when we overspend at the grocery store in our weekly budget. This week was a good example and below was my answer to her. So far we have spent a total of $114.91 which is $50.91 over budget this week and we are still not done shopping. When we spend over budget one week this means we have less to spend in the following weeks. In this case we have $75.09 left to spend for the month $190.00-$114.91. We don’t want to spend more than the $190.00 a month. We will see what happens. We hit up a few stores for our shopping this week Shoppers Drug Mart, Food Basics and […]

Tips to Curb Emotional Spending and Not Break the Budget

Have you ever found yourself bored and decided to go shopping? Did you have a rough day at work or a spat with someone and find yourself at the mall? Mall shopping ropes you into spending and your brain turns to mush. These may be  situations where you shop with your emotions rather than shopping for what you need.  We don’t go into the mall often but when we do we are overwhelmed with the various shops, signs, sales and smell of food, all of which are so enticing. So we are walking through the mall then all of a sudden…….Mmmm People go mad for this stuff? ~  Has this been you? The  strong aroma of popcorn at Kernels Popcorn forces you to do a 360 , nose in the air  and nothing else matters.  You get to the counter looking for samples, you ask for various flavours. They agree and the  first  double caramel corn melts in your mouth and then immediately money melts from your pocket. “Thanks and come again”, she says as you walk away with your LARGE bag of golden popped nuggets. I bet you’re laughing because you know you have done this or thought about it but convinced yourself NO! Tip: […]

Eating In Vs Eating Out- The Comparison

I had to write this post after eating out as I was just shocked at the cost of our meal at a well-known chain Restaurant. I used some gift cards I had received from Christmas to pay for the order. It wasn’t on my dime but I had to use them before they expired. So it’s my birthday and the wife and I decide to order some take out and enjoy the evening watching a movie. We don’t normally eat-in at restaurants  for 3 reasons: High priced food  15-25% Tips to the staff We like to eat home cooked meals We are frugal that’s no secret but eating out has never been big on our agenda unless we were travelling. Yes I know you are saying we need to “live a little” and you are right we should, but at what cost. Cost of Eating Out vs Eating In Here is the run down from last nights meal.. out of 5 stars we gave it a 3.5 We thought we had $15.00 on one gift card and $13.00 on the other. We wanted to go over that price so we didn’t have a balance on the cards. The likelihood of us eating […]

Can we Stick to the Grocery Budget- February 20-26 2012-Week 4

Last week was our first no-shop week and I must say it was difficult. You think it’s easy to say “I won’t shop” but it doesn’t work that way. Temptation is all around us even at the pharmacy or petrol station. Fighting the temptation can be won though. I’m happy to report that we did not shop last week for grocery at all. We did manage to get much more completed with our household to-do list. Sorry I meant Honey do-list. 🙂 We’ve been updating our New 2012 Budget Spreadsheet while transferring over Jan/Feb 2012. We hope to have that available soon. Note: If you are playing the grocery game and want to play for the rest of Feb and March I will draw for 2 winners if I can get 10 or more people to participate for this week. If  not we will start next week for March and this week will be a trial run to get you motivated~ If you haven’t subscribed to my blog, please do that way you won’t miss my posts!  So we have $64.00 to spend this week in the grocery budget. THE RESULTS: We spent a Total Out of Pocket $52.94 We used a Total of […]

Can we stick to the Grocery Budget Feb 2012 Week 3?

Week: February 13-19 We will not Shop, We will not Shop, We will not Shop Like usual I open the front door and there upon the mound of snow is our weekly flyers. I’m still confused why she avoids the mailbox which is clearly hanging on the wall. Perhaps, she just doesn’t care that my flyers are soaking wet. Changes to our grocery budget in February,2012 has us committed to a “Shop Free” week once a month. The grocery game is a system we use to keep the budget in check. Shop Free week has arrived for us and it’s bitter-sweet. Gazing into the refrigerator I’m amazed to see temperature controls on the back wall. I typically brace for explosion with produce, condiments and beverages. Now that we’ve taken it down a notch it makes me realize how little we need to make it through the week. Our Discovery…….Shop for what you need now, not what you think you will need. Less Food=Less Waste= More Money for the BUDGET You know when you’re at the grocery store and you convince yourself you need ( insert product here). We’ll use Mangos. Reasoning would be … It’s so hot outside and I can […]

Can we stick to the Grocery Budget February 2012 Week 2?

We did pretty good last week considering it was our first week playing our Grocery Game. The Grocery Game is something we play to bring down the total out of pocket in our monthly Grocery Budget. We challenge ourselves to stick to a budget without giving in to temptation, although temptation sometimes gets the best of us. The tough part is figuring out which week will be our no shop week. One week out of every month we are going to be staying home and doing ZERO shopping. This could prove difficult for us but this is what the challenge is all about. Perhaps I will have to come up with a solution for instance maybe not opening the grocery flyers and tossing them to the bin. I don’t know, that sounds pretty harsh if you ask me. Who know’s what deals we could miss. Well this weeks shop is fairly straight forward; Budget $64.26 Zehrs We wandered around the store but didn’t find anything so we left empty-handed. The store is up the road from our house so we pop in every once in a while to see if there are any 50% off pink stickers. If you shop at […]

Top Ten Ways to Cut your Grocery Budget

Looking back at 2011, the first four months of our grocery budget was completely out of control, but that was our own fault. Although we were getting amazing deals, we never stuck to the budget because we were using coupons more than we needed to. We went from spending over $500 a month on groceries to our 2012 goal of $192.78. One thing we learned it was OK to let coupons expire and that we didn’t need to get everything even if it only required us to pay the tax. You see, over time all those little amounts that seem like nothing at the time, all add up. With only 2 people to feed we believe we can easily meet this goal. The problem comes when there is a really good deal or a 20x Shoppers Optimum points events. We also like to keep our eyes peeled for all those discount pink stickers and reduced to clear shopping carts filled with discontinued products. We scan our favourite spots in certain stores to find shelves that have marked down merchandise and so can you! Over time you get to know where in a store they will put all the marked down items for sale. If you are […]
