The Grocery Game Challenge Dec 3- Dec 9, 2012 Festive Preparation

It’s a few weeks before Christmas now and the festive preparation has begun starting with our Holiday Snowballs and tonight Peanut Butter Balls. This is the first post for the December Grocery Game Challenge and I welcome all new fans that are joining in from wherever you are in the world! As I mentioned in my November Budget Update yesterday next year we will be making changes to our Christmas Budget.  Just when we thought we had it sorted out we were thrown another curve ball yesterday. This is where we feel the pressures of the holiday season but should be ready. One of our family members came up with the idea to have a “gag gift” for everyone to open on Christmas Eve. She says the amount to spend is $10 which is fine but we did not budget for this expense. Although it is only $20 total for the both of us it’s more money we need to factor in for next year, just in case. The Christmas season is so unpredictable that we will really take a look at our Christmas Budget to make it as realistic as we can. Any left over money can go towards boxing […]

The Grocery Game Challenge Nov 26-Dec 2,2012 Let it Snow!

This is the last week for the Grocery Game Challenge for the month of November. As we ramp up for the next few weeks of snow, shopping, wrapping and parties we will try our best to stick to the budget. We thought it would be one of those month’s that we could make it through but we were wrong. There’s something about November and December and our grocery budget that it just sky rockets if we are not careful. We were doing well up until last week when we had just over $1.81 in the budget to spend but so many great deals popped up. We realized it can be hard to say no to these amazing deals that you know you can stockpile because you WILL use them. The harder part is knowing you have the money to pay for them. So, sadly we went over budget this month BUT the good news is we are away for a couple of weeks in December so we won’t need much. The hard part is IF great deals pop up which we are betting they will. This time of year the shops are in high competition mode and the deals just […]

The Grocery Game Challenge Nov 19-25-Black Friday and 35 Days Til Christmas

There’s only 35 days left until Christmas with Black Friday around the corner and Thanksgiving this Thursday in the USA for our American friends. That means it’s time to get the ball rolling so you don’t leave everything until the last minute including grocery shopping and baking. If you missed my Grocery Game Post from last week you will see all the holiday cookies we will be baking come the first week of December.  I will be posting these recipes every Sunday in December. This week we are staying away from the grocery stores as we have no money left in our grocery budget for the month. What we plan to do is eat what we already have in the pantry, freezer and refrigerator. I think we have more than enough food to pull off a week of no trips to the grocery store especially since today is already Tuesday. My advice would be to not look at the flyers if you really want to stick to your grocery budget or save some money extra each month so you can shop if they have super deals on so you can stockpile some items. We may do this for next year where we add […]

The Grocery Game Challenge Nov 5-11, 2012- Holiday Baking Planning

Holiday Baking can see the Grocery Budget sky-rocket as prices for baking ingredients typically rise up for the Holiday Season. This potentially just adds more pressure to the grocery budget and why planning is important. Last weeks Grocery Game Challenge I brought up the topic of  Holiday Baking and how it could be a budget buster. We don’t bake as much as we used to as we found we had more hanging around than we were giving away each year. I don’t remember making any traditional British holiday recipes myself when I lived in the UK  I do remember each year my mum would make a lovely British Christmas Cake, comparable to a fruit cake. Mrs. CBB fell in love with this cake (probably because of all the nuts and alcohol in the cake). Now we have narrowed it down to a few Christmas Balls that we enjoy making and packaging for friends and bringing to gatherings. What we like to do is shop ahead of the festivities so we are ahead of the game especially when work parties start in November for some folks. This year we took advantage of Bakers Chocolate Squares found at the Dollar store for only $2.00 which normally […]

The Grocery Game Challenge-Oct 30-Nov 4,2012 Halloween and Rain!

One day until Halloween and today is the start of the November month for The Grocery Game Challenge. Rain, rain go away and take Hurricane Sandy with you so the kiddies can trick or treat! I know some cities are talking about re-scheduling Halloween due to the weather conditions. If you are stuck indoors you could always make a quick batch of some Halloween treats I made on the weekend, Mr.CBB’s Scary Witch Finger Cookies. I have a hard time saying no to these buttery cookies. With the last two months of the year approaching we are looking back and reflecting on our grocery budget of $190 since we started this game in February. We had some blips along the way and will share our goals for 2013 some time in December. This week we didn’t have too much to purchase but we spent more than we should have, oops. Sometimes those in-store deals can get ya and we are just like everyone else having to make the split decision of yes or no. How will this decision effect our grocery budget for the month? We are not over for the month but we will have to concentrate on sticking to […]
