12 Practical Ways To Afford Expensive Food For Less : The Grocery Game Challenge 2016 #4 Sept 26-Oct 3

The most expensive meal you will ever eat is the one you can’t afford.   When you crave the most expensive steak but your budget can’t afford it there are ways to get what you want but the key is, patience. Luxury food differs from person to person depending on their grocery budget but it is possible to splurge without paying the price. Most frugal consumers read the flyers and create their grocery list based on that alone. If you really want something that you just can’t afford it’s important to be mindful when you grocery shop. By that I mean scanning for prices. You may not be able to buy it at that moment but eventually you’ll get what you want. We get a bit happy in the grocery store if we find 50% off packages of bacon or other expensive food that we would never buy full-price unless we had to. Even then we may never buy some of the more expensive food on sale because it’s not practical for our family. Over the years we’ve experienced just about every way possible to purchase expensive food that we wouldn’t typically try for less. You may buy a fattier […]

The Power Of Flowers Is Priceless   From roses and tulips to orchid’s and pansies, flowers have a powerful way of brightening someone’s day. Whether you are celebrating an anniversary, a birthday or you just simply want to make someone smile, the beauty and fragrance concealed in a single flower can easily turn a bad day into a better one. How much money you will spend…that is your choice.   Flowers ARE for everyone   As we all know, Valentine’s Day is the biggest sales day of the year for most florists. Supermarket Confrontation and How To Avoid Embarrassment : The Grocery Game Challenge 2016 #3 July 18-24

GROCERY STORE WARS TAKES FOODIE FIGHT TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL   Dealing with difficult customers is something that grocery store staff contend with every single day but when customers are dealing with irate customers things can get a bit messy. There are people who love to grocery shop and other that despise it. Then we have people who don’t know how to deal with their emotions and anyone that steps in their way sets off a trigger that could turn deadly over something small in most cases. This stuff really does happen   I remember a time in the UK while I was grocery shopping a woman turned the corner of an aisle with her shopping cart and her child was distracting her while sitting in the carrier seat of the cart. The woman wasn’t looking where she was going and smashed into another customer’s shopping cart knocking her purse to the ground. Conveniently her purse was wide open and the contents fell out for everyone to see which upset the women who verbally got abusive with the lady. The situation was resolved quickly but not after an hot exchange of words that made the mother cry. The grocery […]

Strange Things People Do At The Grocery Store To Save Money: The Grocery Game Challenge 2016 #3 Apr 17-24

SAVING MONEY CAN BECOME A CHALLENGE HIGH   I’ve blogged about grocery shopping for 5 years now and have learned so much about how Canadians grocery shop. I’ve learned the good and the ugly about how far people will go to save money on one of the biggest budget expenses apart from mortgage/rent and vehicle payments- food. While at the supermarket I’m on full radar and see so many strange things people do to save money that it amazes me how they can be so easy-going about it. When cracks in the savings system are found some consumers cash in because they want more than a little, they want it all even if it’s a bit underhanded. Financial times are tough in many households as grocery prices and living expenses are steadily increasing where the tightest grocery budget will feel the strain. You may think that only people who are struggling to buy food will conquer the grocery store using crooked ways just to save a few bucks but this is far from true. Even the richest of people are frugal and will do just about anything to keep money flowing through their bank account even if it is cheating […]

TRAVELLING IS NOT AS CHEAP AS EVERYONE THINKS…BUT IT CAN BE!   One of the toughest parts about creating a travel budget is planning a food budget for your travelling experience. Whether you stay in a hotel, resort, or you hop in your vehicle for a road trip daily expenses of food must be accounted for or even estimated to keep a tight budget from exploding. Here are ways we’ve learned to save money on food while travelling that we want to share with you so you don’t make the same mistakes we made along the way. Not everyone uses a travel budget when going on vacation which means the grocery budget or entertainment category may be the next two logical places to carve a bit of money from. The reasoning behind using the grocery budget is because if you’re not home to buy groceries you spend that money on travel food. Makes sense to me if it’s a simple road trip but a destination holiday may prove a bit more costlier. Related: How much should my grocery budget be? Most travellers are so focused on planning the trip that they put food on the back-burner because it doesn’t seem […]

How To Survive Food Cost Increases in 2016 : Join The Grocery Game Challenge 2016 #1 Jan 4-10

DON’T BE STICKER SHOCKED WHEN YOU GO GROCERY SHOPPING THIS YEAR   If you thought your grocery budget was tight in 2015 experts are saying to buckle up and expect to add $345 this year to your grocery expenses. With the loonie taking a nose dive and the fact that most of our produce is imported, prices in the produce section are about to get scary. Already we’ve seen cucumbers jump in price to $3.00 each from a cool $0.99 and celery that looks like it could use a bit of love with a shocking price tag of $4.99. Keep in mind, these are NOT organic prices either. Prices are slated to rise from 2.0%-4.5% for fruit and produce in 2016 according to the University of Guelph’s annual Food Price Report 2016 English For 2016, the Food Institute is forecasting food inflation rates across the country to be anywhere between 2.0% to 4.0%.- UofG Food Price Report In February 2015 Stats Canada released the consumer price index where you can clearly see prices aren’t moving down nor will they be anytime soon. Is Being a Grocery Clerk a Bad Job? : The Grocery Game Challenge #2 Oct 12-18,2015

FINDING A JOB YOU LIKE   If you are contemplating applying for a job as a grocery clerk I’ve got some great resources for you today which might help you on your job hunting journey.  I’ve never worked as a grocery clerk before although I did work in the grocery industry. My role was picking cases of products in a warehouse which was a repetitive, tough job with long 12 hour shifts, but it paid well. In the UK it’s not easy to find a job fresh out of University or if you just want to enter the workforce. When I came to Canada I was amazed at all the opportunities that were in front of me but sadly most of the careers that I was interested in required me to go back to school, which is what I did. Working as a grocery store clerk is a great opportunity to gain experience working in customer service which can then take you to other levels in the working world. Not everyone who gets a job in a grocery store wants to retire there but for those that do they may end up getting promoted which means better opportunity and more […]
