How to avoid paying full retail price at the grocery store: The Grocery Game Challenge #1 Aug 3-9,2015

PLAN YOUR GROCERY BUDGET   No one wants to pay full retail price for something which is why most people look for a deal or bargain when they are at the grocery store. Recently I wrote a post asking whether you put full-price products in your grocery cart when shopping. I shared with you the reasons why shoppers may do this but I never did explain how to avoid paying full retail price in the first place. I’ll be honest and tell you that it’s not easy because not everything we need on our grocery list is on sale when we need to buy it. There are ways around it though so don’t jump the gun and pull out your wallet to pay the cashier just yet. I had a fan send me an email after I wrote that post to ask me if I could help her with grocery shopping. Although I physically can’t I recommended she post her shops in the Grocery Game to start but to tell me more about what the problem was. Her biggest concern was meal planning and not having a full pantry. This meant that there were times where she had to run […]

5 Ways to Check Out Faster at the Grocery Store: The Grocery Game Challenge #2 July 13-19, 2015

TIME IS ON YOUR SIDE   So many people have said they hate grocery shopping and arriving at the checkout is where most people experience the stress of waiting. There’s nothing worse than having to run into the grocery store for one product and you end up having to wait forever because every check out is backed up. Since the invention of the self-scanner more people opt to forgo the traditional cashier and check out their groceries by themselves. In the past almost every grocery store had a grocery bag boy/girl at the checkout who would pack your groceries with his/her trained eye. The bags would go into your shopping cart and away you would go. The worst you would have to do is load the groceries on the belt and pay for the bill. Easy Peasy! Back in the 80’s (possibly before that too) my wife remembers some stores namely A&P who would have big red bins that would be numbered and all you had to do was pull up to the shop and a grocery clerk would take your number and pack your vehicle with your groceries. Gone are those days and I’d be shocked to ever see […]

How to get grocery savings you deserve without embarrassment: The Grocery Game Challenge #1 July 6-12,2015

LEAVING THE SAVINGS   While standing in line to get groceries the other day the lady in front of us had a product scan in higher than the shelf price. For all you savvy Canadian shoppers you know that most grocery stores follow The Scanning Code of Practice (SCOP). That meant that she could have gotten the product that scanned in higher FREE up to $10. When she told the cashier that the product was cheaper the cashier needed to check the price. The customer was happy to settle on paying for the shelf price and moving on with her day as most people are. While she was doing that I mentioned SCOP to the lady and she shook her head when I told her to mention it. She said, “No, I’m too embarrassed to ask”. I thought how could someone be embarrassed to get some grocery savings? It’s not that hard to ask for something but for some people it’s a BIG deal especially if it’s not something they’ve done before. It was then I realized that maybe customers wouldn’t be so embarrassed to ask for deals if they knew how to ask. Last week this also happened to […]

How to find Love at the Grocery Store: The Grocery Game Challenge #5 Mar 30-Apr 5, 2015

LIVE, LAUGH, LOVE AND GROCERY SHOP   If you have a love affair with the grocery store and are single, I’m going to tell you how to find love while roaming the food aisles. Most people are looking in all the wrong places for love and doing the deed isn’t going to be your fast-track way to the alter either. There’s more to finding love than what happens in the bedroom. Sadly the first place that comes to mind for those who want to find love is by going to the bar. The bar dating scene is so old these days especially with free online dating sites like Plenty of Fish and even apps for your smart phone that it has taken on an entirely new direction. The problem with the meet at the bar mindset is that it’s always been where people go to enjoy drinks, dance and meet people. In one sense we are conditioned from the time we are in University and College that the bar scene is where people hook up because that’s where students go to unwind and have fun. It’s time to think outside of the clubs because there are more places to find […]

How to grocery shop for free : The Grocery Game Challenge #3 Feb 16-22, 2015

TOTALLY FREE STUFF TO TAKE HOME   Wouldn’t it be nice if you could get all of your groceries for free every week and get rid of the grocery budget for good? It sounds like a great dream but let’s be honest, it’s not reality unless you’ve won free food for life. I will warn you before you read this that not all my ideas are traditional in the sense you go into your grocery store and walk out with free food. I will however share with you the ways you can find free food that will cut back on your budget expenses. When Mrs.CBB and I were chatting about getting free food we both realized that not everyone does a grocery shop at the supermarket for food. Some people can’t even afford to step foot into the grocery store so they must source food from other resources. This led us to the conclusion that you could get free food but it might no necessarily come from the grocery store. You might also not get everything that’s on your wish list but you will get food to eat but when it’s free are you really going to complain?   The […]

Protect your wallet from the pickpocket at the grocery store: The Grocery Game Challenge #5 Aug 25-31, 2014

SECURE YOUR VALUABLES   You don’t think the pickpocket pro will target you but all it takes is you to turn your focus for one second and your wallet will be missing. Learning how to pickpocket doesn’t require a degree rather it’s simply practice and you don’t want to be the one they practice on. I don’t know if any of you, especially the ladies have had your wallet stolen from your purse before but you can feel so violated knowing you were right there. I could have probably taken my camera and went around a few grocery stores this week and snapped pictures of lonely shopping carts with open purses sitting in them. It happens all the time and for some reason I notice these things and maybe because my instincts kick in wondering how someone could leave their purse alone for someone to steal boggles my mind. I make sure my wallet is always in my back pocket even though many men will tell you keeping your wallet in your front pocket is likely a better place to deter any pickpocket. Yes a pickpocket will put their sticky fingers in your back pocket to steal your wallet or […]

Tryvertising a new way to get free groceries: The Grocery Game Challenge #4 Aug 18-24, 2014

FREE FOOD FOR YOUR OPINION   I don’t know many people that would turn down free groceries for their opinion of a product. Would you? In the past we’ve done home studies on new products that have hit the market and what we got was free product as well as payment for reviewing the product. It was a no-brainer but you had to be chosen to test the new products based on answers to a survey that was emailed to you. If you qualified they mailed the product to you. It wasn’t always free groceries that we reviewed but free shampoo or other products helped us to save a few dollars here and there. We no longer do this as they aren’t offering such reviews any longer but at the time it was fun to do. We have participated in food related focus groups and one other place that offers cash for reviewing food items that are new to the grocery market or companies simply want an opinion on changes to a product. It’s nice to be able to take home free groceries to cook, review it and get paid $30-$50 cash to do so. It doesn’t happen often but […]
