grocery game monthly challenge

30 Keto Diet Staples You Will Find In Our Kitchen : The Grocery Game Challenge #5 Aug 28-Sept 3

STOCK UP ON LOW CARB ESSENTIALS WITHOUT CRUSHING YOUR GROCERY BUDGET.   You may have noticed over the past 2 years that our grocery shopping list has changed quite a bit since we’ve moved over to a keto diet. You might also have taken note that our many of our Sunday frugal recipes are low carb as well and this is because we no longer just eat what we want or classify as “healthy“. We have taken control of our eating habits and put more effort into what fuels our bodies and how we energize it each day. Related: Are you eating too much food? I’m not exclusively on a keto diet however I do follow it as much as possible as my dietary needs are different from Mrs. CBB. Coffee is a great start to the day for keto diet lovers. Many of you might be familiar with Bullet Proof Coffee and for those of you who aren’t let me tell you it’s packed full of fat! Some people have asked if the keto diet has interrupted our lean grocery budget of $265 a month for 2 adults and a toddler and it depends. Some months might be great […]

GET READY TO HIT PRINT ON THIS JUICY ITALIAN TURKEY MEATLOAF RECIPE   Mozzarella stuffed Italian turkey meatloaf tastes as good as it looks and it’s low carb, gluten-free and keto-friendly. All the wonderful elements of a classic turkey meatloaf but without the breadcrumb fillers but loaded with Salerno mozzarella which oozes gooey when baked. Just look at the photo once again…yes, it is THAT GOOD!     Characteristics of an amazing meatloaf recipe   A meatloaf recipe has to be moist, flavourful and paired up with a nice homemade sauce or gravy. If I had it my way a nice side of buttery mashed potatoes but these days we opt for something healthier such as a garden salad. These days most people are looking to cut the carbs and opt for smarter choices such as vegetables, fruits and proteins. Do you ever just have one of those days where you come home and the last thing you want to do is cook a big meal? We have them often especially with an almost 3-year-old running around the house. Although we like to use our crock-pot to ease into a quiet evening of family time there are times where we […]

Crispy Bacon Fried Lupini Beans (Low Carb Snack)

YOU HAVEN’T TRIED A DELICIOUS SNACK UNTIL YOU’VE EATEN THESE BACON FRIED LUPINI BEANS   We got this crazy idea for making Crispy Bacon Fried Lupini Beans only because we found out that Lupin Flour which is ground lupini beans is low carb. You will find some low carb recipes that now use lupin flour as opposed to almond flour or even coconut flour. We’ve had lupini beans before mainly at Christmas time when we visit Italian friends of ours. There are bowls of lupini beans on just about every food table as it’s a traditional snack. Once we found out the nutritional values for lupini beans we were sold. Are you ready for these Crispy Bacon Fried Lupini Beans? They are so good and this is my first time using them in a recipe so if I can do it, so can you. My next attempt at using lupini will be to make a lupini cake and lupini cookies once I order the lupin flour which you will learn about below.   What are lupini beans?   Lupini are ancient and mostly found in the Mediterranean in the European culture, Middle East and South America and have been available […]

Gorgeous Asparagus Salad with Greek Feta Cheese (Low-Carb)

ADD A SPLASH OF COLOUR TO YOUR SPRING AND SUMMER SIDE-DISHES   A vibrant green fresh asparagus salad with sweet red peppers and Greek feta cheese dressed with an apple cider vinaigrette will wow you and your guests. The best part is that the asparagus salad is low carb and easy as pie to make. Well, easier than pie I should say. When you are hosting a party this Spring or Summer take advantage of fresh asparagus that are in abundance and fairly inexpensive to purchase. Since asparagus is stocked at the grocery stores keep an eye out on the reduced rack as you may get lucky and score a great deal on seconds.   Foraging for Asparagus   Around May, June and into July asparagus are in season in Ontario and you can find asparagus growing in many ditches along country roads where vegetable farms reside. This is the time you may find foragers out and about with their bags and a sharp knife scooping up their free produce. We’ve done this many times in the past with the family and it was quite fun. My father-in-law is a master forage ranger as he started with his parents back […]

Creamy Radish Soup With Melted Mozzarella

MOVE OVER AND MAKE SPACE CAULIFLOWER BECAUSE RADISHES ARE THE NEW POTATO OF CHOICE FOR LOW CARB FOODIES.   Yes you read that right, Creamy Radish Soup with melted gooey mozzarella and loaded with triple brie and cream cheese. Very cheesy and the perfect low carb soup for breakfast, lunch or dinner. As you can see radish soup takes on a light pink colour and packed full of heart-warming nutrients. If you don’t care for the strong taste of raw radishes but love potatoes I assure you that you’ll love radish soup. Radishes are a root vegetable after all. Before radish soup came into our lives as what started as a laughable idea we only ate them raw or baked with bacon fat, which is delish by the way! We’ve also tossed whole red radishes into pasta sauce, chili or other recipes that typically would contain potatoes. Since Mrs. CBB doesn’t eat potatoes radishes became her new potato of choice. You can even make mashed radishes as you can mashed cauliflower and they both taste like mashed potatoes. Lots of mashing going on! I did not believe Mrs. CBB that radishes tasted like potatoes once roasted as they have a […]

TIME IS ON YOUR SIDE WHEN BAKING THESE PEANUT BUTTER PROTEIN COOKIES ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUR SWEET TOOTH IS WAITING.   Do you know that cookie that you just can’t stop eating because it keeps calling your name? I’m always working with Mrs. CBB in the kitchen to create new low-carb treats that we can both enjoy. I’m a hard-core sugar boy who likes something sweet just about every day. Once in a while I don’t mind dipping into the wife’s stash of desserts especially if I don’t have anything prepared for myself. I know we’ve shared lots of low-carb dishes on CBB lately but don’t get scared off from enjoying these recipes in your life. They are delicious, full of flavour and won’t make you feel like you’ve just eaten an entire pizza to yourself once you’re done a meal. You know that heavy tummy feeling I’m talking about. Protein Peanut Butter Cookies>> Don’t knock em’ until you try them. Most often we don’t even tell our friends what they are […]

Cream of Asparagus Soup with Asiago Cheese (Low-Carb) (Gluten-Free)

MAKING A POT OF HOMEMADE ASPARAGUS SOUP DOESN’T GET ANY EASIER.   Although we enjoy broth and tomato based soups another famous soup we make in the CBB kitchen is our Cream of Asparagus Soup. Not only is it low-carb and gluten-free it’s extremely easy to make, budget-friendly and brings home the flavours of Ontario produce when available. During early-mid June if you love to forage you can find wild organic asparagus growing in ditches around farmers fields preferably that grow and sell asparagus. Mrs. CBB grew up with her dad who loves to forage still to this day. Over the years since she was a small child she’s foraged for wild asparagus, wild mushrooms, wild berries and plenty of other free wild edibles. I’ve been introduced to the foraging life quite a few times and it’s amazing what grows and is hidden in the forests, ditches and tall grasses. I won’t get into the specifics of wild asparagus picking but Mrs. CBB found Crystal over at Whole Fed Homestead who offers a detailed blog post about How To Hunt and Forage for Asparagus. Mrs. CBB says that reading her post brings back lots of memories because this was exactly […]
