grocery game monthly challenge

The Ultimate Guide for Budget Christmas Desserts : The Grocery Game Challenge 2017 #1 Dec 4-10

DON’T GET CAUGHT AT THE BAKERY WHEN YOU CAN MAKE INEXPENSIVE CHRISTMAS DESSERTS AT HOME   When you host a holiday party you must consider the costs of the food you prepare in your meal plan. Apart from the main meal Christmas desserts can get just as expensive as the dinner itself. Prices for baked goods and ingredients sky-rocket during the Christmas holidays which means a bit of planning goes a long way. Just the other day I found a lady who was selling Christmas shortbread cookies on Facebook that were gorgeous to look at and I’m sure delicious but not for $20/dozen. Nope, not happening. Mrs. CBB and I have never hosted a Christmas dinner at our house because we don’t have any family here to invite. Every year since I’ve been in Canada we’ve celebrated Christmas at my in-laws house which has come to be somewhat of a tradition. Below you will find lots of great Christmas desserts that you can make at home for a fraction of the cost of buying them pre-made at a bakery. I’ve also included below the Ultimate Guide links to past articles I’ve written about holiday baking including tips to stocking your […]

Low Carb Sugar-Free Salted Caramel Cheesecake

MAKING THE BEST HOMEMADE CHEESECAKE IS EASIER THAN YOU THINK-SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DO IT MY WAY!   A couple who are friends of ours absolutely adore cheesecake so when we invited them over for dessert last week we thought we’d surprise them with this decadent  low carb, sugar-free Salted Caramel Cheesecake. Oh yes, they were surprised! We are also huge fans of cheesecake especially the salted caramel cheesecake but most importantly there must be two things present; Thicker Crust Thick Cheesecake If you can carry out those two aspects of a cheesecake you’ve got yourself a winner. I’m actually quite amazed at how many people think cheesecake is a difficult recipe. That is far from the truth. When we created our salted caramel cheesecake we wanted to keep it simple so our guests could add any variation of toppings we offered. What I like about toppings and cheesecake is that you can add just about anything. Since the CBB house has went low carb and sugar-free just about everything we make takes that path. It has been 2 years since Mrs. CBB gave up sugar and she feels great and doesn’t crave it like she used to. For this […]

10 Last-Minute Frugal Halloween Recipes For Your Party : The Saturday Weekend Review #239

DON’T JUST DECORATE FOR HALLOWEEN- SERVE UP SOME DELICIOUS TREATS FOR YOUR EVENING GUESTS   Halloween recipes in our household have become somewhat of a tradition and it’s not because we are parents now because we started it years ago for a work party. I’ve never quite seen so many of my colleagues go mad for eating a finger before but I guess it’s an inside joke considering the line of work we are in. One of our most popular Halloween recipes on the blog are Spooky Witches Fingers which are super easy to make and inexpensive. They taste very similar to a buttery shortbread cookie with a hint of almond flavour. Delicious for dunking too. With Halloween days away we are planning on baking some Halloween treats for the kids in our neighbourhood who come by the house-and the adults too of course. Mrs. CBB and I are huge fans of baking treats for just about any occasion and creating crafts with our son to introduce him to kitchen fun and creativity. So far, he digs it especially licking the beaters after I make something with chocolate. Last year we made Oreo Halloween Rice-Krispies which were delicious but […]

35 Minute Zoodles Bolognese (Zucchini Pasta w/Meat Sauce)

ZOODLES ARE A GREAT SUBSTITUTE FOR HIGH CARB HEAVY PASTA. TRY FOR YOURSELF, YOU’LL BE GLAD YOU DID   Today I’m sharing with you an easy recipe that you can have on the table in about 35 minutes working at a steady pace. Hear Ye! Hear Ye! I can now announce that I am the new King Zoodles Chef. Mrs. CBB said that I’ve finally mastered the art of zucchini noodles. That or she just wants me to keep cooking so she doesn’t have to. Nah, she meant it. Good-bye pasta. Thanks for many years of tummy filling goodness but we’re moving on to something far different and it’s gluten-free. We are a pasta loving family but in order to keep the carbs low we’ve started removing as much gluten as we can as well sugar but most of all, eating too much food. This Zoodles Bolognese is so good you’ll be telling yourself that it is on the weekly menu forever. Every bite is filled with tonnes of flavours from the spices. A dish like this in a restaurant could easily cost you $20 where I was able to make this entire recipe that serves 4-6 people for that […]

Super-Fast KETO Mug Biscuit In 90 Seconds

STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND MAKE THIS OUTRAGEOUSLY DELICIOUS KETO MUG BISCUIT   You most certainly can make a microwave Keto mug biscuit in 90 seconds and the best part is you can dress up it any way you like. Mug recipes are great because you can portion control what you want to eat so you’re not itching for another slice or two. Mrs. CBB was hankering for some low-carb bread but we hadn’t made a loaf so she went without. Mrs. CBB without bread is like that mid-day chocolate high that softens stressed out employees to get them through the rest of their workday. Yes, she loves her bread but not all the carbs that comes along with traditional bread made with white flour. That’s when she asked if there was a way we could make a Keto mug biscuit in the microwave similar to the many low carb mug cakes we’ve concocted over the past two years. So like any good husband who wants to avoid the afternoon tummy rumbling carb rage I went to work creating this Keto mug biscuit for her. She helped but mostly with the eating part and I did my fair share as […]

Debt Free Mom Admits Becoming A Thrift Shopping Shopaholic : The Saturday Weekend Review #235

SPENDING MONEY NO MATTER WHERE YOU SHOP IS STILL SHOPPING   I can count off the top of my head about 6 thrift stores near me and we go to all of them at least once a month. Sounds shocking but it’s not especially when we are looking for something we need. Most often it’s clothes, craft supplies, CD’s and kitchen items. On occasion we find furniture or home decor but we really don’t need any of that stuff any longer. Shopping online sites like Kijiji or Craigslist is just as naughty as shopping secondhand because most often items purchased are well-loved  or deeply discounted by the owner. Thrift shopping online can be far more dangerous than going into the shop because you can do it from the comfort of your home. Sarah a mom of 2 young boys emailed me looking for some advice to help her curb her obsession with thrift shopping. She’s not alone in her plight to cut costs yet over-spend buying used and in some cases brand new items with or without tags. Here’s her story… Dearest Mr.CBB, My name is Sarah and I live in Hamilton, Ontario with my husband and two boys aged […]
