FRUGAL SOLUTIONS FOR EVERYDAY KITCHEN SMELLS   If you work or have worked in the restaurant industry then you know what it’s like to come home after work and you have a strong cooking smell on your clothes. This same cooking smell can linger in your home during and after cooking and stick around unless you take a proactive approach to rid of kitchen odours. My house smells what can I do about it? Lemon Citrus Syrup Yoghurt Cake

A YOGHURT DESSERT YOU EAT WITH A FORK   I know what you are thinking it’s not yoghurt….. but wait it is. Yogurt, Yoghurt and Yoghourt are all proper spellings of the delicious fermented creamy treat we all have grown to love. Last Saturday was a girlie night and the five of us had decided that we would have a pot-luck supper. I really do enjoy meeting up with the girls just good to have a chat, relax and eat good homemade food. I decided to make them my food creation guinea pigs and to try a few different tastes and flavors while we were all together. They never complain so and I love to whip up new ideas in the kitchen and see what my friends and family think of them. You all know how I like to combine different tastes and today was no different. I had lemons and some natural Greek yoghurt in the fridge that really needed to be used up and some eggs. Many people use yoghurt in all sorts of recipes so a Greek Yoghurt cake paired with lemon citrus was what popped into my head. At the very least I knew that with […]

Easter Bunny Butter Shortbread Cookies With Lemon Drizzle

EASY EASTER SHORTBREAD   The best memories I have of baking especially at Easter is coming into the kitchen after school and smelling and seeing what my mom had baked. My favourite cookie that my mum would make is the butter shortbread cookie which I will share with you here today. These butter shortbread cookies are super easy to make and decorate and are far better to make homemade vs store-bought cookies. My mum used to make these amazing double shortbread cookies which are two pieces of shortbread loaded with jam in the middle and icing on top. We always used to fight over those when we were kids just because they were doubled up and stuffed cookies. After moving to Canada I had to get this shortbread recipe from mum so I could bake it with my kids, which is actually my grandma’s recipe. I love lemon and so does my family which is why I created this shortbread cookie with lemon drizzle. My youngest Rhia is the helper to decorate the cookies even though she eats more than the actual decorating. Of course there is always a fight to see who gets to finish off the lemon drizzle icing or to have […]

Mr.CBB’s Tomato Minestrone Soup Recipe

When the colder weather approaches soups, stews and chili are on the menu more often than not. In Mr.CBB’s Kitchen this week I have participated in the British Columbia Welfare Food Challenge by raise the rates. With this challenge you start with an empty pantry and you spend only $26 at the grocery store on foods you will eat all week. The purpose of the challenge is to get a better understanding about how challenging it can be to live on $109 a month for groceries given to welfare recipients. You can read about my journey along the way in The Grocery Game Challenge posts and What I ate the first 2 days of the challenge. This quick homemade soup was created from my list of ingredients and I have to say it was absolutely amazing. So amazing that I couldn’t stop Mrs.CBB from stealing 3 bowls of the soup over the course of 3 days. This was such an easy minestrone soup to make. A large pot of soup is not only easy to make but it’s a cheap way to fill you up with some healthy good food. This pot of soup used almost all the ingredients I had in […]

Mr.CBB’s Mum’s British Lemon Fridge Cake

This Lemon Fridge Cake has been passed down the ranks in my family from my grandma all the way to my mum and now us kids. She would make it for any special occasion as did my grandma and I distinctly remember the smell of lemon permeating our house. Most often it was made for Birthday’s, Christmas and Easter but we could devour it any time of year. Growing up one of 3 children my mum was a stay at home mum and was always mixing something up in the kitchen. If you couldn’t find mum she was in the kitchen with her white apron tightly drawn around her mincing, rolling, stirring and testing something new. There were no boxed cakes in our house as my mum always wanted to create new recipes. Likely why I am so passionate about being in the kitchen. It was great to have my mum at home and I learned just as much from her in the kitchen as I did from my dad about repairs to the house and vehicles. The tartness of the lemon in this cake will please the lemon lover in anyone. The whipped cream balances out the sweetness of […]

Mr.CBB’s Creamy Garlic Hummus

Hummus simply means “chickpeas” in Arabic. What I have created is an easy creamy garlic hummus recipe that anyone can make in minutes in a food processor for around $1.50. While shopping the other day we noticed the cost of this frugal dip coming in at a whopping $4.50 for a 500 g tub. You can find Tahini paste down the ethnic section at your local grocery shop for around $4-6 for a large container. Although this cost seems high for the paste it will last you for many recipes. The Tahini (sesame butter) is what turns this chickpea spread into a creamy delight and makes your taste buds tingle. If you are a hummus fan you must try this easy garlic hummus recipe before heading out to the grocery store to pay premium price for something you can easily make at home.  If you are a fan of roasted garlic you could easily substitute the fresh garlic in this simple hummus recipe for roasted garlic. Sometimes I even like to toss in some fresh basil from my garden to kick it up a notch in the flavour department. Roasted Garlic- Peel your garlic to expose the outer layer skin of the individual garlic cloves. […]
