How going vegan affected our budget

FOOD AND YOUR WALLET   About three years ago, my wife and I decided to switch to a vegan diet. The decision was a difficult one but after some quick research into the type of foods we were eating, we decided we wanted to make a change. Personally, I wanted to start avoiding meat products and processed foods that were heavy in calories and made me feel tired after consuming them. Along with the health benefits that come with eating a more healthy diet, the decision to go vegan affected our monthly food budget in a few ways (and some were surprising).   EATING VEGAN   What is a Vegan? A vegan diet eliminates meat products and ‘strict’ vegan diets also refrain from consuming eggs, dairy products and other animal-related by products. The term vegan is described as “non-dairy vegetarian” and typical vegan diets are usually high in fibre, magnesium, vitamin C/E and iron. They also tend to be lower in saturated fat, cholesterol, omega 3 fatty acids and zinc. Since most processed foods tend to include animal-related products, a vegan diet usually consists of eating more raw, lean and healthier foods. Some notable vegans include Ellen DeGeneres, James Cameron, […]

Taking My Life Back While Getting Fit On A Budget!

Guest Post: Bonnie Taking back my life and getting fit, You bet I am! My name is Bonnie and I’m a 53-year-old woman who has been overweight most of her life including childhood. I have a love hate relationship with food and used it as comfort source towards painful issues. I’ve been on many diet programs and have managed to lose some weight but no long-term successes. I realized the number one reason for the continued failures was my inability to embrace the healthy lifestyle as a “permanent change” and not a temporary fix. Where It All Began  It started back in 2007 when my husband took sick and diagnosed with end stage liver failure and liver cancer. I was so busy caring for him that my life was put on the back burner. I was filling my emotional void with fast and fatty foods, even if I wasn’t hungry. We eventually both lost our jobs due to his illness and I had to care for him as his memory was slowing drifting away. Shortly after we became homeless until our daughter and grandson opened their home to us. My husband was placed on the transplant list to hopefully get a new liver before […]

My Childhood Shaped My Financial Future

My childhood shaped my financial future after seeing my parents struggle to make ends meet for our family. I am now 27 years old with a young family (8 and a half month pregnant with a 29-year-old fiancée and a 1-year-old) and we are totally debt free! As most parents would do, mine never wanted to communicate their financial problems.  My mom always seemed to find a way to make everything into a game. She would always bake with us, turn her old clothes into costumes, make play dough, and cover the walls in newspaper and let us color in the pictures! I think when children are that young as long as you keep them busy in a creative way they don’t mind if it’s costing $100 or its free. On the flip side I remember my dad taking me to kindergarten on his old beat up motor bike that hardly ever started and yelling…hold on tight!  The reason was because our car was always broken down and my parents could not afford to fix it. Along with that I remember in my childhood my mom making it into a game when it would rain. She would have us run and […]

Driven To Quit Smoking Challenge Has Ended- A Lifestyle Change For Love,Health,Money

As you may know we quit smoking on January 29,2012 because it was the right thing to do. We have been tossing the idea in the air for over a year and we had to jump in head first. Our mates were very excited for us when we finally told them because they truly wanted to see us live a healthier lifestyle.  I am naturally fit as my job keeps me that way but I do all the right things including lifting weights, sports and eating healthy. Smoking was always our downfall and a way to cope with stress and everyday life. Here are some changes we noted since we have quit: When I’m working out at the gym I don’t get winded as fast. I feel like my lungs are wide open and fresh and that I can carry out anything I set my mind to.  If you want to lead a healthy lifestyle just being active 3 days a week is important. You don’t have to be a big gym buff like I am but simply walking the dog or to the park gets you out of the house and moving is what is important.  This is what […]
