Poverty Stories: Growing Up Poor Made Me Rich But Not Happy

SOMETIMES WE KEEP LOCKED UP THINGS THAT HURT US THE MOST.   Fan Submission to Poverty Stories My parents married when they were 17 years old back in the early 70’s and lived in a town just outside of Toronto. Shortly after I was born into what was a loving family environment that did what normal families do. This was the happiest and scariest moments for my parents because financially they were just getting started. Luckily both of their parents lived in the same city and they were able to get help from them with babysitting and anything else they needed. Both my parents are the youngest of many siblings who watched their brothers and sisters grow up to become successful in their careers.   Walk down the aisle   Back in the early 60’s and 70’s it wasn’t uncommon to get married before the age of 20 years old so naturally having a baby was the next step. My mother was an accomplished musician among her peers and my father followed his passion as a plumber in the trades. By the time they were in their mid-twenties they were both working steady jobs and life was getting busy. My […]

Rich People Don’t Care About Your Life When You’re Poor : The Saturday Weekend Review #194

THE THINGS YOU LEARN FROM PEOPLE YOU DON’T WANT TO LEARN FROM CAN BE DRAINING.   When you’re successful and rich everyone else around you is either rich, richer or poor. There is no in-between because life-style change if adopted can skew the mind even if rich people were once poor themselves. It’s easy to get caught up in the luxury of financial security and for some rich people their life revolves around becoming even richer. They didn’t get where they are without hard work unless of course the money was inherited. This is where the term the “Rich run with the Rich” comes from because what are poor people going to teach rich people who they don’t already know, right? Wrong. As I sit here typing this with a spoon deep in a jar of peanut butter I can’t help but remember what a gentleman said to me at the park on Thanksgiving Day,”Rich people don’t care about your life when you’re poor.” I couldn’t get the conversation I had with him out of my mind. I was out with the family on a lovely Autumn day on my day off  and we decided to bring our son to […]

Why Are You Being Frugal When You Don’t Have To Be?

MIND YOUR OWN FINANCIAL BUSINESS   The whole saving money and being frugal movement is always filled with people who just don’t get it. Wanting to save cash is not a new concept even if you think someone shouldn’t have to. It’s amazing how saving money ideas are crucial when running a business but not when it comes to personal finance for some people. Even if you don’t own a business you can bet your employer successful or not is always looking for ways to curb spending. You don’t have to be budget poor to live a frugal life and you can be rich and frugal at the same time-Imagine that! Mrs. CBB and I were at a friends dinner party about a week ago enjoying some of the finest foods including triple brie, prosciutto, melons and a main dish that we would only make for a special occasion. I guess that means we were all special. Most of the people in attendance would be considered “rich” or “well-off” because they own successful businesses or have thriving careers in the medical field. My wife and I don’t typically talk about personal finances with anyone however sometimes we’ve been happy to […]

Is Parenting easier when you are considered rich? : The Saturday Weekend Review #125

MONEY DOES NOT REPLACE LOVE   Parenting has only partly to do with money and everything to do with love and a desire to be the best parent(s) you can be. We’ve talked about the definition of rich and how it has different meanings for everyone in the past on CBB. For most people we associate “rich” with the rich and famous A-listers, musicians and famous people like the Kardashians. There are also rich people worth millions who aren’t famous and those who are rich because they don’t have much to worry about financially with all of their bases covered. Rich to some people may also be someone who has a great career, who owns a home, a car or even someone who has no debt. The dual-income family may also fall into this category. In other words if you have cash to spare and no debt you should have money to burn and you must be taking advantage of the easy life because you can. This is all wrong and based solely on assumptions. Money in parenting only helps to pay for food, clothing, daycare or the babysitter and all the other necessities some of which you can get […]

Single Millionaire Paid The Price To Get Where He Is Today

WE ALL HAVE A STORY   People may criticize the way you live your life but they might not know the price you paid to get where you are today. Stories often go untold because people are shy to say what they had to endure to become the person they are. I don’t talk about my life growing up with my friends but if they want to talk to me about theirs I’m happy to listen. It’s quite amazing what you learn about people once they open up about their upbringing and past.   The price you pay   You might have heard or read about those rags to riches stories which for some people hit home because they too were faced with situations that were unique but they overcame them. You don’t have to be a superstar to be deemed successful today all you need to do is believe in yourself. Those that don’t put in the effort to achieve their goals are often the people who put down those who pushed the limits to achieve their own. Believing that everyone with cash has or had the easy life is absurd. Just like others some of these rich people […]

If you won the lottery would you go bankrupt? : The Saturday Weekend Review #91

THE MILLIONAIRE BUDGET   I read an online article about what not to do when you win the lottery which made me wonder why people go bankrupt when money falls in their lap. I know what you are thinking…how does someone who won millions of dollars blow through it all so they go bankrupt? Easy… they don’t manage their money properly. Whether you are a millionaire or not you still have to budget your money. I know some of you might laugh at that but money is money and there is no special budget for rich people either. It’s simple math but people tend to complicate money to the point where they don’t know where all of their money went until it’s too late.   Lottery tickets are a waste of money   Some people may say that spending money on lottery tickets is like throwing money out the window and in one sense I agree but in another you can’t win if you don’t play. My wife and I play the lottery and buy one line with encore of Lotto Max every week. No, there have been no heart-stopping moments checking our lottery tickets but it’s our way of […]

Would you buy a jar of clean air? : PF Weekly grab a brew #67

IF THERE IS A BUYER IT WILL BE SOLD   There have always been odd products on the market that most of us shake our heads at but would you jump at the chance to buy air? I’m all for the entrepreneurial spirit and using your creative imagination to invent a product or service for the public in order to make a profit. Forget about encouraging your children to be young entrepreneurs selling just the obvious like lemonade or making their way to Dragons Den when you can score some big bucks selling air. (I’m just having a laugh… please do encourage your children’s creative side.) The most you have to pay for is the glass jar you store the air in and labelling because well, air is free as long as it is clean air. I know I’m having a laugh but really it’s true that not just one person but 3 people are selling air and making a nice profit from it.   Buy my air   That’s right I nearly fell off my seat this morning wih my coffee in hand when I read a Yahoo article about a male artist from Beijing who is protesting the […]

Financial Independence may only exist once we get there

A World Where Anything Is Possible I won’t lie and say that I have never thought about what financial independence in my life would be like, because I have. Not everyone allows their mind to wander into the future or an imaginary place where dreams can come true, or at least if for only that moment they are. It takes us to a happy place where our world is a capsule in time that we create and where we feel safe, cared for, loved and at peace with the world. Come dream with me Lay down in a comfortable quiet space, draw the blinds, close your eyes and come dream with me for a moment. Follow me gently to another place where I can script the next chapters of  my life, in my mind. There are times when I’ve spent the winnings of a Lotto Max lottery that I fictitiously won in my head because it seemed more visual than it ever would be. A dreamer I am, that is me, yes, especially with the odds of winning with my eyes open, back on planet earth. As I silently engage your thoughts with mine and walk you through my journey […]
