DON’T GET LOST IN THE FRUSTRATIONS OF LOOKING FOR A NEW PLACE TO CALL HOME   Whether you’ve just landed a new job or you’re moving for school or personal reasons it’s important to know where to begin your property search. One of the hardest things about moving to a new city is not knowing the area which can be a struggle when your main goal is to find somewhere to live. I was the person who was frustrated even though I was already living in Canada and the city in which we currently reside. Thankfully I had Mrs. CBB to guide me but that still didn’t ease the stress of making the biggest purchase of our life. Although we weren’t sure if we were going to rent an apartment after moving out from our hole in the ground (the cave) after research and running numbers a property search for a house was our best option. You may be looking to rent a room, apartment, condo or buy a house in a new city so I’ve put together a few inspiring search options to get you started. First and foremost visiting the area you are hoping to move to will […]

How To Protect Your Property From Open House Theft: The Saturday Weekend Review #197

YOUR OPEN HOUSE IS A CANDY STORE FOR POTENTIAL OPEN HOUSE THIEVES.   Open house signs seem to be flooding the real estate market these days especially during the Spring, Summer and Fall months when the weather is nice in our neighbourhood. A successful open house means that you’ve had potential buyers come through, nothing was broken, nobody was injured and you didn’t get robbed due to open house theft. Open houses today are met with homeowners and real estate agents being more cautious than they once were because open house theft continues to happen every single day. Do you really need an open house? You don’t need to have an open house but if you want one it’s important to know what you’re getting involved in especially security risks.   What is an open house listing?   Once you’ve established that you want to sell your house and you’ve signed all the papers and met up with your agent at their real estate office you may consider an open house. The same rules apply if you are a for sale by owner representing yourself because now you’ve got to do the legwork to make sure you protect your investment. […]

Why I’m not buying your house for sale

BUY MY HOUSE……   There are reasons why I won’t buy your house for sale unless it was up for sale at a fantastically low price and here’s why.   Since spending months looking at open houses only a few years ago before we bought our current home my wife complained that I was too picky. I’m pretty sure her views have changed now over the years of learning more about the home buying process. I blogged the other day about how to avoid home buying mistakes the first time but this post goes a bit deeper into what we saw and what we were looking for in our first home. I swear she thought we would never buy a house at one point and the real estate agent was probably getting a little annoyed too. I can’t even remember the amount of houses we visited but it was quite a few although the reality is I didn’t want to buy a house just because it looked pretty. If you have a house for sale and are wondering why your house hasn’t sold yet you might want to look at some of the obvious.   Wrong MLS information   These […]

The Saturday Weekend Review #41: Would you buy a house that has a spooky or illegal past?

Behind Closed Doors Lurks A Story You Might Want To Know You are looking for your dream home when you suddenly find it but then you also find out there is more to the home than meets the eye. Getting my daily dish of Yahoo this morning I was reading about whether Satanists decrease the value of a home. The article had me thinking about what other things might decrease the value of a home that was out of the ordinary and would I put an offer on a home of that calibre. I don’t suspect the property assessment with the Multiple Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) would be affected as they value the homes that are comparable in the neighbourhood so we might not see any value decrease reflection documented when the paperwork arrives. Then again, what do I know? Whether it was a grow op house for sale, illegal activities, someone may have died or even worse was murdered inside of a house would you put an offer in on a house you fall in love with knowing this information? There was a time last year where a beautiful home sitting on a large property in our city was […]
