How Distraction Theft Will Make You Their Next Win : The Saturday Weekend Review #140

DO YOU TALK TO STRANGERS?   It doesn’t matter where you are distraction theft seems to be the hottest way for thieves to steal what you own these days. It’s not a new way for thieves to get your stuff but it sure does seem as if it has been revived. I wonder if scammers are running out of ideas or maybe this is the easiest way without much effort involved. A few years ago a friend of ours told us how her daughter was almost the victim of distraction theft while studying at a local coffee shop. On the table she had her Apple iphone and wallet along with her school books like most students would. A customer who had just purchased a coffee came up to her and asked a question looking for directions. While responding to him and looking out the window pointing she caught him trying to steal her cell phone. She said to her mom, “The guy had his hand on my phone so I removed it and put it in my backpack”. He apparently laughed it off saying that it was a habit because he had an iphone as well which he pulled from […]

What pushes people over the edge financially?

FALLING ON HARD TIMES…   We all know someone who has struggled financially at some point in their lives and although it’s not easy to stay above the water how some people handle it is shocking. It seems like each time September rolls around the media is filled with articles about people who are getting into trouble with the law for reasons relating to money. Financially holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas can be a tough time for people who struggle with their money. Many struggle in silence. It’s no wonder talking about personal finance is taboo especially if people are ashamed of their debt load. This time of year it seems as if we hear more about thefts, robberies, fraud and scams leading into the Christmas holiday. Just the other day on Facebook my wife read a message on a group board from a mom advising other moms to make sure they lock their doors and take their gifts inside as someone had broken into her car and she lost everything. It only took me a few minutes online this morning to read another article about a couple who faked a pregnancy so they could steal products from an […]

Renting the right way protects career woman

LOOK OUT FOR NUMBER ONE   It’s that time of year where students are renting apartments, rooms or anything they can get their hands on just so they can go to school. Students aren’t the only people looking at rental listings, it’s everyone who needs a place to stay because they aren’t homeowners. When we are young we don’t think much to the rental game that is out there for those homeowners that want to pay down a mortgage on a rental unit. The game is simple, rent out the house so it pays the mortgage, repairs and city taxes. With the right tenants it’s money in your pocket as a landlord. Some landlords take it a step further and don’t repair homes etc. but that’s an entirely different story. Some people don’t even own homes and try to get rent from unsuspecting people who are looking for a safe place to live. Not every landlord is shady but between landlords who can’t even afford to keep a house going and those renting an apartment online for cash or online fraud with rentals it can be a tough game to play. Real estate scams are a big business especially once […]

Why your Facebook feed is flooded with a lucrative gift card offer

FREE DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN FREE   I know many of you who are on Facebook may have noticed a spike in Facebook fans sharing posts about how they managed to grab a $500 Costco gift card by sharing. Sounds lucrative and typically these types of advertising schemes on social media are too good to be true. Pop-ups suck! Why? Many are just hoops, read on!   What is the easiest way to make money? Work for it! Yup, I know it’s hard to swallow but that’s life. If you were one the many people who thought that internet money was going to fall into your lap with 5 easy group shares you’re not alone. I can’t even begin to tell you how my Facebook feed was flooded with Facebook fans who were sharing a giveaway not sponsored by Facebook or Costco in any group they could find. Ads on Facebook plague social media users on a daily basis and many people have thrown in the towel moving on to other platforms because they simply can’t handle how Facebook has become such a showcase for money grabs. Then again what comes free such as the Facebook platform means that the company […]
