Scan and Go Technology Is A New Grocery Shopping Convenience : The Grocery Game Challenge 2017 #4 Oct 23-29

ANOTHER POTENTIAL GROCERY STORE TIME SAVER HAS ROLLED INTO CANADA TO IMPROVE YOUR SHOPPING EXPERIENCE.   Knock, Knock…Who’s there? Walmart Scan and Go that’s who! It’s not new technology either just new to Canada. Like some of you reading this I’m starting to wonder if grocery stores are complicating the entire shopping experience by adding so many ways to grocery shop and check-out. I mean, how hard can it be and why aren’t we making time to grocery shop? Should using the self-checkout or scan and go self scanners qualify shoppers for a discount since they are taking on the work of the cashier? Some would say yes and others no. Your payment is in the form of convenience even though it may not always be that convenient. Do you remember when Tim Hortons only sold donuts and coffee or McDonald’s sold breakfast, burgers and fries? If not you’re probably far younger than I am but back then convenience was simple. Not anymore. When Tim Horton’s started to added the sandwiches, bagels, soups, chili and now breakfast and potato wedges it was overwhelming for most. Why complicate such a simple idea? Money and keeping up with the markets. Simple as […]

How Thieves Scam The Self-Checkout System : The Grocery Game Challenge 2017 #2 Sept 11-17

IT’S NOT WORTH CHEATING THE AUTOMATED CASHIER   Should customer service workers worry about shifts in the job market with more stores introducing self-checkout systems? I’d believe so because the more we automate the less we will need human interaction although there will always be customers who pass on technology for a traditional checkout with a cashier. Will self-checkout systems replace jobs as technology moves forward and the crunch of cost-cutting and increased minimum wage blanket consumers and retailers? Possibly and we’re seeing self-checkout systems pop up just about everywhere. Questions upon questions which can only be answered as time goes on and not only from the customer and employee perspective but also the companies that introduce the self-checkout system. If keeping costs lower is the name of the game for a company they most likely would do it especially if that means lowered costs to the consumer. Most often this is just a dream but noteworthy. Stores with the self-checkout system seem to be on the rise in Canada with Walmart, Home Depot and just about every grocery store following suit. With the rise in minimum wage topping $15 in Ontario we are hearing more shops are aiming to […]

Should using the self checkout qualify you for a customer discount? – The Grocery Game Challenge #3 Sept 21-27, 2015

NO EMPLOYEE DISCOUNT!   As of right now I don’t know of any grocery stores that will qualify a customer to a discount if they use the self checkout. Not even a loyalty card that states if you use the self checkout 10 times you get a Free Steak is available as a perk. I like Steak! You get ZIP Diddly as my wife would say, nothing. While standing in line the other day waiting for a product check watching and shuffling my feet another customer spoke up from behind me. “Hey, why doesn’t someone open up another cash register so we can get out of here faster?” says an older gentleman wearing a black business suit. You see this grocery store has 10 checkout lanes but only 2 of them were open although the self checkout was also available. Was it even worth moving over to the self checkout? Is the store purposely not bringing in enough staff to open the grocery checkout lanes because they rely on the self checkout? It’s all about the money. I’m sure there is some truth to this because if there wasn’t there would be more staff on duty to handle those customers […]

Why you should always get a product price check: The Grocery Game Challenge #3 Oct 13-19, 2014

BE A GROCERY BUDGET MONEY SAVER   Not everyone has patience when they are grocery shopping and the last thing you want is to hop into a line when the customer ahead of you needs a price check. I know what you might be thinking….Moron, why didn’t you check for a price before throwing it in your grocery cart!! Don’t be so harsh because one day it might be you. These days we rely on computer scanning systems along with a UPC scanning bar code to bring up the price automatically. The problem is not every product has this code and some stores don’t have computer technology. Back in the day the cashier had to manually input prices which was even more reason to watch your prices. Even the cashier can make a mistake today putting in codes to bring up a product’s price. While watching a comedy show on Just For Laughs the other evening with my wife one comedian had me think of all the times I shut down a line for a price check. Comedian Sebastian Maniscalco said he has a problem with people who hold up the grocery line and he would rather tell the cashier […]

The Grocery Game Challenge June 10-16,2013 #2: Grocery Store Self Checkouts

Grocery store self checkouts are popping up in many food store chains around Canada in hopes of saving the company money and getting the consumer in and out of the store as efficiently as possible. Another one of those grocery store ideas gone mad and now many others are thinking it’s a smart way to save time and money. I can see it now, the new grocery store name of the future, “Self Scan and Save“, but are we really that far ahead of the rest? It’s not only grocery stores needing “fewer employees” to run cash registers it’s also big box stores such as Home Depot and Wal-mart to name a couple. Pretty soon you might not be asking, “what grocery stores have self checkouts” as they might all have them down the road as their popularity increases. Survey Says Although a couple of years old, a survey conducted in 2011 by Empathica Inc. who specializes in customer experience management solutions across Canada and the USA. The survey of 16000 consumers asking about expectations being met at the grocery store turned up that many shoppers love self checkouts. The information below was shared at the progressive grocer website where you can […]
