Popcorn Candy Crackle… with 3 ingredients!

AFFORDABLE SNACK TIME   I don’t know many people who don’t fancy popcorn or the smell that overwhelms the house when it’s popping in all it’s glory. Popcorn is a low-fat snack that is also low in calories when air-popped without all the creamy butter and a great way to satisfy when the crunch monster appears. Let’s face it though, plain popcorn is boring. For most of us our first memories of popcorn stems from the movie theatre or while watching a movie at home. Many of you might even remember Jiffy Pop. It’s almost a must-have for movie fans to buy a bag of movie theatre popcorn even though we know how expensive it can be. If you don’t go to the movies and opt to watch movies at home making popcorn is a cheap snack that won’t break the bank. My kids are huge fans of popcorn especially buttered microwave popcorn. If you don’t like the convenience of putting popcorn bags in the microwave you can still do it the old-fashioned way in a pot or the safer Jiffy pop way. I think for most households the popcorn bag is the easiest way to go for home popcorn […]

Why do snacks tempt our budget while waiting in the grocery line?: The Grocery Game Challenge #4 Sept 22-28, 2014

TEMPTATION AND YOUR BUDGET   Pretty much every grocery store you frequent will have snacks waiting to bust your budget if you give into temptation while standing in line. They say to make sure you eat before you go grocery shopping so you don’t overspend and it’s true but what happens when you get the snack munchies instead? You spend more that’s what happens and it can be even pricier than just buying snacks down the snack aisle if you give in to the cash register snack marketing ploy. You would think it’s only the grocery store but it’s not. Have a look next time you go to Home Depot or Lowe’s and you will see they sell chocolate bars, drinks and beef jerky for any hungry customers waiting to cash out. There is always marketing behind the grocery store from the minute you open your weekly flyer to the time you walk in the front doors. Money has to be made and whether it’s from the full-priced products customers buy to the customers who don’t care about weekly specials to the snacks at the cash register.   Buy me a snack   If your goal is to stick to […]

Child breaks the food rules of daycare: PF Weekly grab a brew #62

THERE ARE NO WARNINGS   Rules are rules and they are put in place for a reason. We have rules at work to follow and many have strict provisions due to health and safety reasons. When I read this article about a 2-year-old child that was suspended for 3 days from daycare for bringing in a cheese sandwich I knew it would cause online chaos. The child broke the rules and according to the daycare policy would be suspended. It is what it is. The Ottawa daycare says that parents sign a policy when they sign up at the daycare and it’s posted in French in regards to the policy on the front doors. Chaos in commenting was right because plenty of parents and those without kids had something to say about this suspension. I’m sure many more parents will chime in because it is a topic of concern and it should be.   Follow the rules   So, the rules of the daycare state “no outside food” is allowed inside the daycare. Best of it is, if your child brings in any food containing peanuts they will be expelled. Strict, you bet. The daycare provides everything needed for the […]

The grocery game challenge Sept 2-8, 2013 #1- Back to school treats for kids

What’s In My Lunch Box? It was back to school today for many Canadian kids which meant the grocery stores were jam-packed and it was near impossible to get help if you needed it as there just wasn’t enough staff. The streets tend to get a bit crowded here when the students arrive for University and College but we have learned to have patience. Funny though while at Shoppers Drug Mart the University students were piling in and the sheer amount of snack items being purchased was outrageous. The counter was filled with Red Bull, Mentos, snack packs of crackers and cheese, chips and chocolate bars. In my head I was thinking how unhealthy all the food was and the cost to purchase the items. Back to school lunches While I was reading the grocery flyers for this week you couldn’t miss the “Back to School” sales in just about every flyer. Many of the sales that were advertised were for convenience foods such as juice boxes, chocolate, cookies, various types of bars and get this, Perrier water. I know, I was thinking the same thing, what kid brings Perrier water to school? I’m pretty sure that a sandwich is standard for […]
