The Grocery Game Challenge #10-Mar 4-10,2013-Road Trip To Target Canada

The arrival of US Discount store Target Canada has ended in 3 Ontario cities Milton, Fergus and Guelph. These 3 pilot Target stores in Canada opened their doors today to anxious waiting customers. We thought we would go on a road trip to the closest Target store to see what the fuss was all about. Instantly I said, it’s a “Zarget” as there was still an aura of  Zellers in the air. I’m sure the reminiscent feelings will slowly die off but it carried through most of the store. In fact it seemed more like a modernized version of Zellers with the high-tech electronics section with some pretty cool cameras (I was tempted but, not this time. There was also the expected traditional pharmacy and the health and beauty section for cosmetics which was bright and so very Hollywood. The great part was the wide aisles, bright colours and it seemed spacious, not cluttery at all, then again it is a new store. Housewares seemed different as there were styles that we had never seen before and the clothes departments were airy and open as opposed to crowded with old clothes and loads of discount racks. A huge change was the amount of […]

The Grocery Game Challenge #9 Feb 25-Mar 3,2013-No-Shop Week, No Means No!

Photo Courtesy/Stuart Miles/FreeDigitalPhotos.net We woke up yesterday morning with the intention of this week being a no-shop week, but that didn’t happen thanks to yours truly. So much for the no-shop clause as I’ve busted it for the month even though it’s the last shop for February. That’s right I’m the one to blame this week for making the wrong decision but that’s Ok we’re allowed to make mistakes. A no shopping day or week whichever you prefer to call it means “no shopping” including not even going near the stores. When you hear temptation call its you that has to make the final decision. Yes, No or Maybe is what runs through my mind and sometimes I lose to temptation, it happens to the best of us. I don’t know what made me go into the shops yesterday but what I do know is that the decision cost me $47.73 of which I would not have spent had I stuck to the grocery budget. Typically we shop no frills then food basics as we can price match if we need to but yesterday I just had this urge to go in to 2 shops to see what’s on sale. The […]

The Grocery Game Challenge #8 February 18-24, 2013~Buy Now or Buy Later

Image Courtesy of digitalart/freedigitalphotos.net Buy now or buy later is something that runs through our minds when we are looking at the weekly flyers or when we are inundated with bargains at the shop that were unadvertised or are too good to pass up. We ask ourselves 3 questions Is this the best price? Do we really need it? Can we afford it in the grocery budget? Often we are faced with these dilemmas because we don’t want to pass up an opportunity to save our family some money. Earlier in 2012 we had guest blogger who shared their thoughts on knowing prices and how to that’s the key to saving money on your grocery bill which leads us to wonder whether we are taking the time to learn them. This week the milk is on sale at Food Basics for example for $3.88 and we have a $1.00 coupon off when you purchase any Lactancia milk. We use milk mainly for coffee, tea and cooking and typically will pay $4.19 at Shoppers Drug Mart to purchase our 4 litres of  milk so we can get Shoppers Optimum points fast. With the $1.00 off coupon this week we would pay $2.88 for 4 litres of milk. So, […]

Inspiration When I was visiting my friend Annetta Powell’s Facebook page I read an inspiring quote on her wall that had me thinking. Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. – Harold R. McAlindon It made me realize that we can’t always see far down the road nor can we just keep walking the same path. So, […]

The Grocery Game Challenge Dec 10-16, 2012 -2 Weeks Until Christmas!

The Grocery Game Challenge is drawing to a close for 2012 and Christmas festivities are about to begin in 2 weeks time. What a year it has been for all who have joined in to post their grocery shops with us. I’ve heard so many great stories from all of you about how some of you have lowered your grocery budget and have made better choices when grocery shopping. Others were able to stick to their budget and continue to strive and set goals for 2013. As the next couple weeks roll in and the festivities start to come to a high this challenge will still be posted so please check in or subscribe to the blog so you don’t miss posting your shop. If you haven’t had a chance please read a guest post I wrote for my mate John at Frugal Rules titled 10 Ways to Stretch Your Grocery Budget. The Grocery Game Challenge Nov 19-25-Black Friday and 35 Days Til Christmas

There’s only 35 days left until Christmas with Black Friday around the corner and Thanksgiving this Thursday in the USA for our American friends. That means it’s time to get the ball rolling so you don’t leave everything until the last minute including grocery shopping and baking. If you missed my Grocery Game Post from last week you will see all the holiday cookies we will be baking come the first week of December.  I will be posting these recipes every Sunday in December. This week we are staying away from the grocery stores as we have no money left in our grocery budget for the month. What we plan to do is eat what we already have in the pantry, freezer and refrigerator. I think we have more than enough food to pull off a week of no trips to the grocery store especially since today is already Tuesday. My advice would be to not look at the flyers if you really want to stick to your grocery budget or save some money extra each month so you can shop if they have super deals on so you can stockpile some items. We may do this for next year where we add […]

The Grocery Game Challenge Nov 5-11, 2012- Holiday Baking Planning

Holiday Baking can see the Grocery Budget sky-rocket as prices for baking ingredients typically rise up for the Holiday Season. This potentially just adds more pressure to the grocery budget and why planning is important. Last weeks Grocery Game Challenge I brought up the topic of  Holiday Baking and how it could be a budget buster. We don’t bake as much as we used to as we found we had more hanging around than we were giving away each year. I don’t remember making any traditional British holiday recipes myself when I lived in the UK  I do remember each year my mum would make a lovely British Christmas Cake, comparable to a fruit cake. Mrs. CBB fell in love with this cake (probably because of all the nuts and alcohol in the cake). Now we have narrowed it down to a few Christmas Balls that we enjoy making and packaging for friends and bringing to gatherings. What we like to do is shop ahead of the festivities so we are ahead of the game especially when work parties start in November for some folks. This year we took advantage of Bakers Chocolate Squares found at the Dollar store for only $2.00 which normally […]
