Should The Brick honour this customers claim on her extended warranty? : PF Weekly Grab a brew #78

WHO IS RIGHT THE CUSTOMER OR THE RETAILER?   Claiming on an extended warranty may be like talking to a “Brick” wall. Make sure you know what you are buying and if you don’t then don’t buy it. OK, to be fair we need to understand as consumers that there may be fine print when we purchase an extended warranty. Not only that but what is interpreted by the retailer might not be what we as consumers interpret which may cause issues or concerns down the line. You might actually feel that you need a lawyer to interpret the extended warranty just so you know exactly what it means to you. I’m pretty sure a lawyer has done the same or written the extended warranty for the retailer. Sounds a bit wishy-washy but that’s the beauty of “customer protection” these days that you pay for out-of-pocket. If you don’t understand EVERYTHING you are buying don’t buy it. If you have to talk to a manager or head office, call. It reminds of the people who sign on the dotted line after listening to someone selling them a product and believing them only to find out they got shafted. Sad, I […]

Your minimum wage job might be your success: PF Weekly Grab a brew #64

REFUSE TO GIVE UP   We all want to be successful yet for the average person success comes from hard work and never giving up. Never giving up are powerful words and I’m sure many of you out there have said them to yourselves time and time again. I know I have. Whether it was while I was running or having to prepare for a job interview or meeting someone very important and I was nervous like the CEO of my organization. Preparing your resume is only one part of getting a job, keeping the job and moving up in the company requires a set of skills only you can provide as your negotiating platform for the bosses. I’ve always tried to be a leader in everything that I do which even includes motivating myself because I believe that success doesn’t come from others strengths it comes from your own. If you want to be successful in your career you have to get rid of that negative mindset that so many people carry around with them. Remember that we all have problems. It’s how we choose to deal with these problems and whether we allow them to affect out life […]

I want to be more successful than my father: PF Weekly grab a brew #63

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS BELIEVE   Sometimes we want to be more successful than others especially if we come from homes where our parents aren’t successful in our eyes. But what does successful really mean? Defining what successful means or even being rich means is an inner belief that will differ from person to person.   Life lessons   When you go to school as a child and see other kids with the latest and greatest toys, gadgets and clothes or boasting about their vacations you wonder why you aren’t either. As a child shopping at second-hand stores when your friends shop at the mall is hard but for many they have no choice. Eventually they will understand that the reason and unless they understand the value of money you may run into resentment. Not all children will turn away on their parents but for the most part if they don’t grasp that you don’t have to spend money to be happy they may try to correlate money with happiness. It’s hard to understand the meaning behind being successful and how hard it is to make something of yourself as an adult or as a parent. I watched […]

Not everything online is free for the taking: PF Weekly Grab a brew #59

ASK BEFORE YOU TAKE   Be careful what you post online because someone might just think they can use it for free. In fact, it’s true many people do share information online but fail to credit the original owner. Granted, mistakes happen. Could you imagine pouring your heart and soul into a work of art or a hobby of yours online only to have someone take it and use it to make a profit? They are making money… yes dollars off of your skill. I read somewhere once that if you have a skill and are good at it don’t do it for free. What happens if someone just takes it though? You go after them, that’s what you do. Is it worth it to you though? That’s your decision. So why is it ok that someone thinks they can take something that a skilled person created and posted online and use it to make money for themselves? Greed? Maybe.   Protect your stuff   It happens all the time and it’s why I always suggest to try to protect any work that you put online so you have proof that you are the original owner of that work. The […]

PF Friday Grab a Brew #50: Do you get a Christmas bonus or rely on a budget?

NEVER EXPECT ANYTHING NOR THINK IT WILL LAST FOREVER   Christmas bonuses for many people are a thing of the past as organizations struggle to keep afloat but many still do spread holiday cheer with their employees even if it is just by giving them a turkey or Christmas card. If you are an employer and are wondering what to get employees for Christmas I’d say that you know your employees best and the only way to retain good people is to make them feel like they are part of the team and acknowledging their hard work. That doesn’t always amount to dollar signs but it is a great way to give back. If you’ve ever watched undercover boss then you know how important it is to recognize those employees that go above and beyond for the organization. On the flip side just this week WestJet went above and beyond for their customers by granting them their Christmas wish list which went viral on You Tube and all social media and certainly showed how listening and giving is better than receiving. When the holidays roll around as an employer you should at the least recognize your employees but it’s up […]

PF Weekly Grab a brew #44: When should you put the Christmas decorations up?

HOLD BACK THE URGE TO DECORATE If you are wondering when you should put the Christmas lights up there really is no specified date to put up Christmas decorations. We often get asked when is the best time for putting up the Christmas tree and to be honest, it’s up to you. But, should you wait? Wait for what? Now that Halloween has come and gone many people are packing away the scary decor  and looking for bells and garland. I know that we store all of our Christmas decor including our fake Christmas tree in the basement. If there is no snow on the ground we just don’t get that festive push though.   Remembrance Day   Not everyone is rushing out this morning to see if they can be frugal and find half price Halloween candy that they can stash away for the year. Some people are dusting off the Christmas decor and talking about what they want to do and where the decorations should go for the upcoming holiday season. I was scrolling through my Facebook page this morning and already I noticed a photo saying not to put your Christmas decorations up until after November 11, […]

PF Weekly Grab a brew #42: A stranger opens his wallet for me unexpectedly

That Moment When You Make Someone Smile   Just before Thanksgiving this year I wanted to write a blog post about simple ways of giving to others especially if you don’t know someone. I also wanted to talk about how to say thank-you for that kindness and how to continue that chain of repetitive nature that we should all crave and that’s a daily smile. I always try my best to do the proper thing when it comes to etiquette and being a good person whether it’s with a stranger or in my relationship with my wife and those that I love. I hold the door open, help someone pack their trunk and even reach items off the top shelf at the grocery store. I get a thanks and a smile in return and I’m a happy guy. I know I’ve made someone’s day when I can go out of my way and help them out. It’s quite amazing the feeling you get inside when you have the ability to help others in any way possible. Most times we help people and don’t even know we have helped them whether it be from a learning experience or simply sharing our […]

PF Weekly grab a brew #40: Are we dependent on the internet?

Being Lazy Could Be The New Convenience    I was reading Yahoo this morning about Amazon Fresh and how they could trickle into Canada with online grocery shopping and delivery like they do in the USA and that giant grocers should be worried because their fixed costs are high and any decrease in traffic could send some retailers out of business. I can completely understand how that would happen because grocers rely on customers to get in their car, walk, take the bus, scooter, motorcycle or any other means of transportation to visit their store each week to check off the items on their grocery list and spend their hard-earned money in their stores. It’s at that time when a customer walks through the door that the retailer has the power of marketing at their finger tips. They hope to reel you in with low-priced specials and load you up with high-priced products that might not have been on your list but you easily were manipulated by sight or even smell to add that extra cost to your grocery budget for that shopping trip. If such a service like Amazon Fresh delivery is brought in there will be the […]
