The Best Canadian Grocery Stores To Shop At : The Grocery Game Challenge 2016 #2 Mar 14-20

THE TOP GROCERY STORES IN CANADA ARE IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD   There are so many Canadian Grocery Stores that it can get a bit confusing trying to figure out where to shop to get quality products while saving money to stretch those grocery dollars. Then there are shoppers who don’t care about saving money because they are committed to shopping at one grocery store even if they have to pay more money for products they can pay less for somewhere else. Related: Are you a grocery store snob? When I first moved to Canada 8 years ago I had no idea about Canadian Grocery Stores let alone where to begin shopping. Grocery store prices differ from shop to shop and with that comes differences in product quality and availability. Depending on where you live in Canada you may be blessed with local markets like the St. Lawrence Market in Toronto or St. Jacobs Farmers Market in St. Jacobs. Just about every nationality has a market/shop that sells products from the homeland especially in Toronto which is great to buy hard to find products for new recipes. The grocery game challenge July 29-Aug 4, 2013 #5: Food samples

Free Food In Grocery Stores Food samples are a great way for manufacturers to let you try a new food product or improved product right at the source. Getting free food doesn’t just stop at the grocery store because marketers use any way they can to reach out to the public. Many companies will also offer you free product coupons (FPC) just as we used the last week to get the New Honey Nut Cheerios Hearty Oat Crunch which they marketed through a popular Canadian couponing website. If you like to get free things then you should keep your ears and eyes open because there’s always something up for grabs. You’ve heard never go to the grocery store hungry because you are likely to spend more than your grocery budget allows. I can tell you from personal experience that yes that is correct. I like to think I have self-control but even at the best of times I get caught off-guard when I see a spectacular deal that I just can’t pass up. Food samples If you get cranky and your stomach is rumbling have no fear where there are free food sample displays there is free food and kids […]

The Grocery Game Challenge Aug 6-Aug 12-Winter Storing

Grocery Shopping for the month of August will be challenging for us no matter which way we look at it. We did go over our $64.00 budget for the week with a grand total of $85.24 as we picked up vegetables for winter storing. Our normal monthly budget for anyone who is new to The Grocery Game Challenge is $190 a month for 2 adults with one no-shop week per month. This month we are feeding 3 adults and 1 teenager so the numbers will be higher. We will also have foods that we normally wouldn’t buy for us but needed for our guests as requested. Although we have a vegetable garden it’s not a big enough garden to grow enough vegetables for us to freeze for the winter season. When the prices come down on vegetables that is when we rush in and start saving. Sometimes we even head to our local fresh farmers market to see what they are flogging off   (British Slang for “to sell”). We believe in supporting our Ontario Farmers and hope that they continue to bring us the best they can offer. We also believe that the supermarkets who supply us with many fresh Ontario […]

The Grocery Game Challenge July 9-15,2012 Summer Yum!

As the garden grows so does our anticipation of eating and storing the fresh fruits and vegetables we sow. Last week we made whole wheat olive bread and as I mentioned we made basil cubes in the freezer. We tested them out when making our minestrone simply by popping in a few into the pot. It was delicious! Recipe coming soon! Puréed Basil In Extra Virgin Olive Oil which then went into ice-cube trays Last weeks shop wasn’t so big for us but this week we needed to stock up on more fruits and vegetables some of which we grow but are not ready. We want to keep experimenting with new recipes and flavours so we are always on the hunt for new products. You never know what will come out of the CBB kitchen! So here’s our Shop for the week……… So much for not needing the money from last week lol… check it out, we’re already over budget for the week but not the month. How much should your grocery budget be? Well, that’s up to you and whether you’ve worked out your family budget. This is an important step in understanding your financial health.  Here are your […]

The Grocery Game Challenge May 21-27-What’s Your Best Score?

No hockey isn’t the topic of this post and I truthfully have no idea how the game is played. Perhaps I should ask my readers for some tips on the great Canadian Sport and maybe visit a game one day in Toronto,Ontario. Yet Another week is upon us which means more money-saving in the grocery budget, so we hope. Let’s see how creative we can be with the rest of our budget. I think we’ve done well this month especially keeping away from any convenience foods. It can be difficult to do because we come to rely on quick meals but now we have to meal plan and think ahead. We now have chives, spring onions, rhubarb, lettuce and mint in the garden that we have been using daily. What else are we growing? We have tomatos, green  peppers, radishes, figs, spinach, parsely, raspberries and swiss chard growing  in our garden as well. Meal Planning I hope to blog about  how we make our family meal plan shortly but for the most part we take into consideration sales, coupons, pantry items, freezer items and fresh veg. Obviously I’ll go into more detail but for now it’s a learning phase with us just like budgeting was the past few […]

The Grocery Game Challenge April 30-May 6-Coupon Savings!

This weeks Grocery Game Challenge is all about coupons. Every Thursday evening the flyers arrive at our door and we sit down to take a look at what’s on sale for the week. Although we don’t actually figure out what we will buy until Sunday (this is the day we set aside one hour to do coupon match-ups and our shopping list) we like to make sure we are organized to cut down on time spent on this task. One way is by utilizing not only the flyers but coupon match-ups which are completed weekly by my mate at Save Big Live Better. I thought it would be a great idea to post Save Big Live Better’s Weekly Coupon Match ups here for you to design your shopping list. Once you have your grocery budget for the week and your coupons you are now ready to rock and roll.  I find the match up list easy to use and saves us alot of time, and time is money right? The Grocery Game Challenge runs Mon-Sunday each week so the match-ups will reflect what’s on sale in that flyer rotation. So hopefully the coupon match up I add weekly to The Grocery […]

The Grocery Game Challenge April 23-29 No Shop Week

We are in our last week for April’s Grocery Game Challenge.. how well have you stuck to your Grocery Budget? This week is our No-shop week however we do have a few FPC’s we need to use up so we will be heading out to take advantage of these. Do you have a No Shop week in your Grocery Budget? We started the No-Shop week to keep us out of the stores one week out of the month. We try to simply avoid the flyers and do other things during the week. It doesn’t always work out but for the most part we have  a plan in place and work towards our goals. If we spend any money this week I will update it here. We are already slightly over budget so we have to be strong this week. Recap Last Week Total Shop for the Week for all this is $84.25-$75.32= $8.93 overspend for the month of April. Not bad considering all the milk we bought this month.. I would say we did exceptionally well!! Most of the food here is for our student exchange program in the summer! The cases of water are not pictured. +$10.00 spending card from […]
