Tabasco Christmas Gift
Tabasco Christmas Gift

I’m adding a little spice to the Grocery Game Challenge! Tabasco has been so nice to send me this nifty Christmas gift set that I won from Facebook. It came with around 10 coupons for $1.00 off any Tabasco and 10 little bottles of  Tabasco in red velvet bags perfect for a stocking stuffer. Thanks Tabasco Canada! I’ll be sure to pass these along to any Winners in the Grocery Game Challenge.

It seems many grocery game challenge fans believe their grocery budget has been shot to the moon and back this month and you know what, it has for many. The lesson we learned this year was that we need to make some changes to our grocery budget including Christmas and stockpiling using coupons or simply great deals we find. Having posted our shops all year we will have a better idea for 2013 how much money we spent in 2012 and what we should set our budget at. We do know for certain that if we spend more one month that we WILL carry that overage to the next month to make up for it. There’s no point going over some months and pretending that the end of year figure will still be what we originally budgeted because that will not be the case. In 2013 there will be no room for excuses as we are getting down and dirty with our budget. The grocery game players who have been with me all year-long know where they need to improve and what they need to do to get a better handle on the next biggest expense aside from the rent or mortgage.

  • What are your 2013 Grocery Game Goals? ie: No shop week, stay out of stores, PM more, use coupons etc~
  • How will you motivate family members to get on board with your budget?
  • Will you lower your budget or add more to your budget?

Also: What suggestions/improvements do you have for The Grocery Game Challenge? Please email me with your thoughts so we can make this challenge even better!! I really want to gain more attention with this so we can bring in more fans to help with the grocery budget and gain back control!!

Share them with all of us so we can help you stick to them!!! I’ll be posting our goals in the first post of Jan 2013 Grocery Game Challenge!!

Been doing pretty good this month considering purchasing items for baking, Christmas dinner and the family Boxing Day lunch. I don’t normally make the holiday meal, I usually go to a relatives house, but things were different this year. With just one week left I should be under budget once again. I just have to get through New Year’s Eve and perhaps do a bit of batch cooking.

    1. Hey Joanna!!
What a great deal on the bakers chocolate at Dollarama. We loaded up earlier on that deal as it’s far better than paying the $3.99 in store price. You have done very well this month congratulations!! What are your goals for 2013 grocery budget? Will you keep the budget the same or increase it with inflation? Ours has gone up which you will read about on Monday as I am posting the grocery game early by one day next week. Tuesday you will see my full budget update. You get ballot #30!! Mr.CBB Happy New Year!

    1 pack smokes- 9.69
    1 turkey- 25.00, $17.00 in turkey bucks
Total- $64.35, $17.00 in turkey bucks

This gives me a total for the week of $217.82, over by $67.82. It was a good week for coupons, with $20.48 plus the $17.00 in turkey bucks. Just those bucks made my turkey only $8.00! I was able to use some FPC as well, that really helped. Next week should be fairly cheap as everything but some ice cream is bought for Christmas Day. Other than that, milk and water should cover the most of it. It was a little pricey getting what I needed to make the lasagna but the cheese was on sale and I’d been waiting for that. I don’t make it all that often so I guess we can live with it. There were a few things in there that hubby wanted besides getting his supper the night he didn’t like what we were having. The V8, pretzels, kolbassa, the candy, the eggnog, he didn’t like the first brand I got so I had to get the second, more expensive one….. he turned up his nose at that one too. Our younger son is drinking both now, he’s fine with either one. We’ll see how things go in the new year……..

    1. Hi Christine!
I bet it was nice to not be at Foodland only this week. You did well with coupons yes this week even though you went over. I can’t believe what you paid for your turkey, wow, that’s incredible. I bet you can do so much with one turkey. We don’t have much to buy either. Sounds like your hubby should give up egg nog lol… it all tastes the same to me. I just buy the sale one and it does me fine. I think you have a pretty good idea where you need to start off 2013 since posting your shops. I updated the template in the grocery game rules to include some new figures. You might want to copy paste that template every time you post a shop so you and all of us can follow your numbers all year long. If you need me to email the template to copy paste I can do that. It’s easy.. highlight the text by pressing down the left side of your mouse and scrolling over the text, then hold the cursor on the highlighted text, right click the mouse and click COPY… then right click again and click PASTE in the Grocery Game… super duper easy!! Happy Holidays Christine.. can’t wait for 2013.. it’s gonna be fun filled full of saving MONEY!!! You get ballot #27! Mr.CBB

    1. Hey Jen!
First off I want to say how proud I am of you trying to cook new meals homemade at home without a box. I hope in 2013 we will see more awesome food exiting your kitchen…yes that’s a challenge!Glad to see you finally used up some of those gift cards you were hanging on to and forgetting to use. That’s awesome you will have money left over! I’ve made changes to the template for the GGC if you go to the rules page you will see. It’s easier now so we can track our overage and under spends to carry over so we actually stick to the yearly budget. So just because we carry over one month if we were over in other months we really aren’t over are we? So that’s the big change for Mrs.CBB and I as I want to stick to the yearly budget. You get ballot #26. The Grocery Game will be posted on Christmas Day!! Cheers my dear and Happy Holidays to you, Ken and Adam! Mr.CBB

      1. Thanks! I will look into the template for my next entry 🙂 Yes, I finally used those gift cards and then I got another $125 worth for Christmas! lol 🙂

  8. Hi Mr. CBB,

Here is my submission for the grocery game this week.

Last week I got A LOT of resistance to meal plans from the so called starving kiddoes (clearly not so hungry or they would eat!). They want meat, meat, and more meat. Preferably served with a side of meat. Thank you very much. I made a chili with chicken and white kidney beans, which was delicious in my mind. Unfortunately, I made enough to feed a hungry crowd but no one wanted to eat. Undaunted, said chili kept reappearing as leftovers as I had ABSOLUTELY NO INTENTION of throwing away good food. It’s wasteful and I never could abide throwing good money in the garbage. We finely have eaten the end of that darned pot of chili but any dish with rice and beans is getting the same response. I have never been anything if not persistent, however.

This week, I made chicken drumsticks, dipped in yogurt and rolled in seasoned breadcrumb/ flour mixture and baked in the oven. It was accompanied by – YUP, you guessed it, beans and rice cooked in the broth made from cooking a pork roast (which was made into tourtiere for Christmas Eve). The beans & rice were mixed with salsa, Sriracha sauce, cooked crumbled bacon, chopped fresh spinach, and shredded cheddar cheese. If these ingredients were topping a pizza, it would be eaten within minutes of exiting the oven. Guess what! They ate it all! This will be my go to rice and beans dish for a while and I will gradually reduce the amount of bacon and cheese used – to cut the cost of it. You know there are days I feel like an evil genius! Poor starving kiddoes, they never had a chance.

    1. Hi Donna,
Wow that pot of chili went far too bad it was met with resistence. It can be tough when meal planning especially if there are picky eaters involved. You have an awesome sense of humour I can tell just by the way you write I can’t stop chuckling.. if these items were on top a pizza hahah…We love beans and rice here and we use many types of dried beans. Do you buy dry or canned beans? We found the dry beans to cost far less so we always get big bags now. Not bad this month you are still left with just under $100 in your budget. Do you plan to shop next week? I will post the grocery game challenge on Christmas Day as planned so there will be on more week shop for the month of December. Cheers and Happy Holidays! Mr.CBB you get ballot #25

      1. I have enough food in the house to take us to January 1. i will, however, need to buy the usual milk and fresh fruit. I will be off for a week after the 27th, so I will likely bake bread in there sometime. I have both dried and canned beans in the house. If I am organized I use dried. If not the cans will come to the rescue but I am trying to plan better and freeze the beans I cook for convenience sake.

I have been thinking about ways to motivate myself to really drive my grocery budget down in 2013. I am a very concrete person usually and have always responded to stickers as a reward for good performance, so I have come up with a plan to give myself some lovely stickers. My plan is hubby approved, so I think it will fly. Starting January 1, we will use the cash envelope system, which Hubby will guard with his life, for all irregular but predictable expenses – birthdays. professional association dues, car registration and expenses, etc. My thought is that this will require $105.00 biweekly to cover these expenses. I am going to leave my budget at $800 monthly but all money not spent on groceries will feed these envelopes. Envelopes full of money make very nice sticker substitutes, don’t you think, I will get my vacation pay in February (usually around $3500). That will be applied directly to my debts, as will my tax refund (probably around $4000). So we will make good headway on debt reduction as well.

I no longer feel that I don’t know where my money is going. Spending a few month to analyse what we spend money on and track my grocery spending has really helped me to prepare a feasible plan that may require tweaking but will work.

Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

        1. Hi!
That’s awesome.I think the sticker idea is great, whatever works for you and your husband is on board so even better. If we don’t spend money in our grocery budget one month we will move it to savings. I don’t want to get in the habit of carrying it over to buy more and more. I want to see what we need to eat each month and that’s it. I have our budget that we use if you want to check it out. The envelope system or the jar system works for lots of people. Do you keep all your receipts and document all your expenses? Anyhow.. let me know if you want to try it you can! Happy Holidays to you and your family!!! Looking forward to The GGC in 2013…

  9. Finished up my grocery shopping and will not be hitting the stores again until January. Little hint here for anyone needing milk throughout the holidays. Macs Milk has it on for $3.97 a bag throughout the holidays ( in this area anyway) also Shoppers here dropped their milk to $3.99. Don’t know what happened in your area Mr.CBB.

    My shopping this week.
    Budget amount : $300.00
Start Amount left for this month : $31.60
    Coupons used this trip: $11.97
Total Amount Spent this trip : $ 41.25
Total Amount over for the month of December:$ 9.65

    milk 3 bags @ 3.99 each 11.97
    cheese 2 bars @ 3.99 each 7.98

    banana 2.24
    bread 2.79
    Almond Milk coupon free
    tomatoes 50% off rack 1.58

    Total 41.25

I will have to get milk around the 27th and dog food at some point. But we are sitting well here.
I have a large brunch here for about 26-30 people on the 22nd. I made it pot luck, so the costs aren’t totally on me. However I planned this in advance and have been purchasing the food as it came on sale the last two months. Family get together at the end of the year is pot luck as well, I am making one vegetable dish and one desert.

This year we aren’t doing too much in the way of sweets. I have froze some sweets that have been made, but will be baking with fruits grown in the orchard last summer, rather then the chocolate and sugars.

Next year I am going to up the budget by about $25. as I find the cost of things in general keep going up. I have also made a stock pile budget of $70. but my first purchase in January will be seeds for the garden. at the tune of about $60.I am not liking this because January the grocery stores are hurting financially as well. ( one daughter works in a Foodland and she is forever saying how much less the traffic is in January)and often there are really good deals plus the MS coupon event begins. I have a feeling I might blow January budgets if I’m not careful!

    1. Hi Farmgirl!
We will be putting our budget up in January as well but we still need to sit to go through it all. January does slow down for the shops because most people have lots of food. Yes our SDM went down in price I noticed that the other day. One fan posted hers at $3.79 which was even better. I have some $1.00 lactancia milks so I hope they go on offer again at $3.99. I’ll buy 10 and freeze them all. We will also add a stockpile budget next year which will help us for those awesome coupon deals if we find any as they are becoming less and less. Have a Happy Holiday my dear. We will see you next week or whenever you get time to post but I will post on Christmas Day the Grocery Game Challenge… the final for 2012~~then we head into 2013 Cheers Mr.CBB 🙂 You get ballot # 24

  10. For the month, I had 132.61 remaining in my $350 budget. I signed up to bring sandwiches for the kindergarten Christmas party, which sounds nice in theory, but sucks for the budget. I did pretty well though, plus I bought the filet mignon for our Christmas dinner. Will I make it under the budget? This suspense must be killing you!

For the record, I ended up with quite a few leftovers from our office Christmas party, so that cuts down on a few things I had to buy. I don’t think I will need much else for the month other than stocking up on dog food. We will be out of town and I don’t want the dog sitters to run out. That will be around $30. So we’ll be pretty close. If I can continue hitting the budget, I might try to lower it. I can’t believe I’m at $350 so anything below that is gravy. Thanks for all the help and motivation.

  11. I guess i will be starting this challenge next month as that is when my budget is full in place, i have been working on numbers for the last two months and i think i will be good. I love the gift you won. my family even kids use it on everything. so yummy. So the new year should be a good one. A budget set, couponing, working for our house.

    1. Hi Carrie,
Yes it was a lovely gift from Tabasco! Mrs. CBB uses Franks Red Hot sauce though on everything.. no pun intended. I’m looking forward to you posting your shops and joining the gang of shoppers who post weekly. We are a great, friendly bunch. If you need any budget help just PM me… other than that any other questions don’t be shy. Make sure to subscribe to the blog so you get my 1 daily email come right to you as a reminder of the grocery game every Tuesday and my other posts. You can subscribe on the home page. have a great night Carrie. Mr.CBB

  12. That was a generous gift that tabasco sent you.I’ve got a friend who eats a bottle everyday, so I know how addicting it can be.

  13. That’s a pretty nice gift set that you received. I’m not a fan of it myself, but there are a few people I know who would love to get that in their stocking this year.

  14. I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one who’s grocery budget hit the crapper. Misery loves company. I’ve really only been a part of this challenge since Sept but I’m sure I can average things out somehow. Looks like another week over the limit but there are some good deals out there. I’ll post the damage in a couple of days. The good news is I don’t think I’ll need much next week as the turkey will be fairly cheap given the turkey bucks i have. I do turkey left over quite well as I’m sure you noticed in Oct. There will be lots of baking to eat as well. I have a lot of it done and in the freezer, think there’s just a second buttertart square, and mint nanimo squares to go. Today was busy …. cherry nanimo squares, cherry almond cake, and a cranberry swirl coffee cake. I’ll try to get you pictures and send you the recipes. Except for the fruitcake the rest of things can be made when ever. Oh… and I just was asked to make a lemon loaf for Christmas by our daughter…. she loves it.
In the deals this week we have cases of pop on for 2.97!! And I can use those save $2.00 when you buy 2 cases coupons!! Brings the stock up price down to $1.97!! Tea is on sale as is coffee. Three boxes of tea and a can of coffee in the pantry.
I won’t be upping the budget amount for groceries all that much but I’m hoping to have more under weeks than going over and banking that towards the heavy weeks for stocking up. A budget is not carved in stone, sand maybe, so I plan to look things over and see what I can do to keep both groceries and everything else in line. I love the support from here, it helps so much……

    1. Well at least you have some numbers you can look at it to make heads and tails out of the situation. Kudos to that. Sounds like you have been super busy in the kitchen and all of what you made sounds great. I’d love to see pictures. I’m sure in 2013 you will see some changes to your budget and you will do much better with the knowledge that you have gained this year. Mr.CBB

  15. We’ve done a great job of sticking to our grocery budget this month! However, that’s likely due to the fact that this month isn’t much different than any other month (for us at least). 🙂 We don’t host any parties and just go mooch off of everybody else. lol

  16. Looks like some nice little gifts from Tabasco. My wife would love something like that as she put Tabasco on her eggs each morning. Our grocery budget has been shot to heck this month as we’re getting ready to host my family for Christmas. Thankfully we had enough carryover from previous months to be able to handle it.

  17. Nice work! You are gone next week, right? I think you should be able to hit your goal this month!

    My shop for the week:

Total Over/Under spend this shop: -$20.89
Total Over/Under spend for the month of December: -$43.03
Total Left to Spend for the Month: $93.03

The numbers look good, but, unfortunately, we have been eating out a lot more. Tis the season I guess, as we are spending more time catching up with family and friends.

For 2013, I will definitely add a bit more to the grocery budget in hopes of dropping my eating out budget. You mentioned that my eating out budget is pretty high; it has been halved from the previous year! Which means we spent roughly $4K in 2011 on eating out. Yikes! But I’m aiming to drop that number to around $1K this upcoming year. I will also continue looking at ads and trying to PM as much as possible.

Thanks for the motivation Mr. CBB! Have a good week!

    1. Hey Vicky,
Yep we are gone next week but I will still be here every day bright and bubbly as usual. Everything on the blog will continue as per normal. We don’t have much to get but the last week we may pick up a few things and use up our free product coupons. I was showing Mrs.CBB your shop yesterday and how well you shop and eat. She said you are doing so well because you eat well but you don’t buy tonnes of food, cook from scratch, lots of veg and the odd treat… so keep it up> I noticed as well…this is where we want to be. Here comes 2013 Vicky… are you ready? Cheers mate… You get ballot #22.. don’t forget to enter the $100 cash giveaway!!

  18. What actions would you take if you found that you didn’t have enough money at the end of the month? I would dig into my savings or ask family for a loan.
