TURN YOUR RIPE AVOCADO INTO A COLOURFUL MAYO SPREAD IN MINUTES
This garlicky avocado mayonnaise is homemade, tangy, delicious, bursting with green colour and will light up any sandwich or meal that you use it in or on.
Personally, I like to call it avocado mayo sauce but my wife says it’s a garlicky avocado mayonnaise so we’ll go with that name for this recipe we created with some leftover avocados that were perfectly ripened.
Honestly, don’t throw your avocado out just because it is too soft or you see some brown when you cut it open.
It’s still edible and delicious just very ripe. You can easily turn ripe avocado into a sweet treat such as a low-carb avocado chocolate pudding or this, garlicky avocado mayonnaise.

Is mayo good for you?
Of course, it is but like with everything we enjoy it in moderation as it has all the healthy fats that our bodies need. It’s amazing how difficult it is to get good fats into our diets when we don’t cook or prepare foods in advance with a meal plan.
Having a healthy avocado mayo substitute instead of plain mayo is a great way to get extra healthy fats in your diet. Often we opt for quick sandwiches instead which on occasion consist of egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, ham or salami with cheese.
Here are some of the most abundant nutrients, in a single 3.5-ounce (100-gram) serving:
- Vitamin K: 26% of the daily value (DV)
- Folate: 20% of the DV
- Vitamin C: 17% of the DV
- Potassium: 14% of the DV
- Vitamin B5: 14% of the DV
- Vitamin B6: 13% of the DV
- Vitamin E: 10% of the DV
- It also contains small amounts of magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, zinc, phosphorous and vitamins A, B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin) and B3 (niacin).

What’s hiding in your mayo? Avocado, that’s what!
Having a picky eater in the family makes preparing meals a bit tougher for us especially when we want to make sure he’s eating healthy.
When our son was a baby he LOVED avocado and would ask for them at least every other day.
We thought this was great however it was short-lived as he started to explore new flavours.
Now that our son is starting year one at elementary school we want to make sure that he is getting the good fats or at least something that is filling his tummy up so he’s not cranky or falling tired at school.
While we were walking through Costco last week he just so happened to point out avocado on a jar of avocado mayonnaise.
He then said, “I love avocado” which was news to us since he hasn’t had it for over two years.
Since he seemed impressed with the avocado mayonnaise we thought we would give it a go since we had an avocado that was ripe and ready to be used up.
We’re not newbies to making homemade mayonnaise in the CBB house so it was fairly easy to get the base of the mayonnaise going before we added the chunks of avocado.
What is mayonnaise?
Mayo or mayonnaise is a stable emulsion of oil, egg yolk, and acid, either vinegar or lemon juice.
The first mayonnaise we ever created in our kitchen was a homemade garlic basil mayonnaise which at the time was awesome since we had all of these fresh herbs growing.
Today, we have all of the herbs plus we are avocado crazy so we decided to combine the two.
The jar of avocado mayonnaise at Costco was a tad on the pricey side for us and we knew we could make it at home for a fraction of the price.
Every mayonnaise recipe that we’ve made has eggs and oil so for this recipe we chose to use an avocado oil which was great as it added just enough avocado flavour to the recipe.
If you don’t have avocado oil you can most certainly use extra virgin olive oil. We also minced up some of our favourite organic garlic, fresh basil, lemon basil as well parsley from our herb garden.
You will want to add some salt and pepper along with some lemon juice to tang up the avocado mayonnaise if you find it doesn’t have that bite that you’re craving.
I find some people like their mayonnaise with lemon tang and others like it a bit on the savory side.
Now, if you don’t fancy making homemade avocado mayonnaise from scratch you can cut corners and use a pre-made mayonnaise although you won’t get that authentic homemade taste like you would if you made it from scratch.
One of our favourite mayo brands is Hellman’s as we find it has the mayo flavour we look for in a pre-made sauce.
How to make homemade avocado mayonnaise
We love to use avocado mayo on burgers or grilled salmon with mayo is the best too. It adds just enough flavour to the fish that you won’t need those other fish sauces.
Baked chicken with mayo is awesome or you can use this avocado mayonnaise as a dressing for your salads which I do often.
If you don’t own a food processor you can easily make this using a hand blender as we did but it might take you a bit longer.
Honestly, we were just too lazy to bring out the processor but we do have one.
- 1 cup fresh basil leaves or lemon basil
- ½ cup fresh parsley leaves
- 1 large ripe avocado cut into chunks
- 3 garlic cloves minced
- 3 large egg yolks
- 3 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon dry mustard
- 1 teaspoon Dijon or yellow mustard
- ½ teaspoon Pink Himalayan salt or sea salt
- ½ teaspoon fresh cracked black pepper
- 1 cup avocado oil or extra virgin olive oil
- Separate your eggs and set the whites aside for another use
- In your food processor add all of the ingredients apart from the avocado and avocado oil
- Mix with the processor until combined then start to stream your avocado oil through the top as it's processing until the mixture becomes thick like a mayo.
- Add your avocado chunks and blend until smooth.
- If you like a chunky avocado mayo don't blend them all the way.
- Adjust lemon, salt, and pepper flavours to your taste.
- Refrigerate 3-5 days.
- Makes about 2 cups of avocado mayonnaise
P.S- You could even call this avocado sandwich spread or add some chunks of tomato, fresh coriander and you’ll have yourself some guacamole mayo which is so good.
