Hot Honey Recipe for Sweet and Spicy Dishes

Estimated reading time: 6 minutes

Try this easy Hot Honey Recipe to spice up your meals; perfect for drizzling over crispy air fryer chicken breasts.

For Valentine’s Day, I made Mrs. CBB her favorite crispy air fryer chicken breast recipe and sweet potato fries.

I know she likes to add a bit of spice to her meals, but not too much, and she loves honey.

I’ve seen hot honey recipes throughout TikTok and Instagram, especially from Chipolte and Wingstop food reviews.

I decided to replicate a hot honey recipe with a tweak to reduce the heat and keep the flavour to top the crispy air fryer chicken breasts.

P.S.- Notice how the air fryer chicken breasts below are shaped like a heart. Ha!

Italian Calabrian Chili Peppers

Italian Calabrese Chili Peppers
Italian Calabrese Chili Peppers

We used an Italian Calabrian chili pepper to make this hot honey recipe, but you can use any.

Some people like to open the chili pepper to release the seeds and casing, which holds the heat.

Since we don’t like to make our hot honey recipe so spicy that it sends us into the refrigerator begging for milk, we keep it whole.

Some of the seeds may pop out, which is fine, and you can scoop them out while the hot honey recipe is cooling off.

For anyone who wants to add crushed chili peppers to the hot honey recipe, you can do one of two things;

  • Keep the seeds in the honey, which will, over time, make it hotter
  • Remove the chili seeds by straining the honey right into a sterilized jar.

The same will happen if you leave a whole chili in the completed hot honey recipe, increasing the heat over time.

I like to keep the chili pepper whole in the honey for about 3 days, as that seems to be a good spice level for us.

If you want a hint of spice in your hot honey recipe, take the pepper out as soon as the honey is done.

I’d suggest testing the honey to see if you like its flavor or want to leave it to steep longer.

Store in a cupboard for up to 5 months.
