This is NOT your ordinary Pigs In A Blanket recipe, it’s BETTER.
The ooey-gooey Italian Saputo mozzarella cheese melts perfectly in the middle of the bacon-wrapped hot dogs.
Making Pigs In A Blanket my way is straightforward, so even teenagers interested in cooking can help.
Original Pigs In A Blanket
Classic Pigs In A Blanket are wrapped in puff pastry or crescent roll dough, such as Pillsbury.
However, I wanted to create a mildly keto-friendly version of Pigs In A Blanket that is not loaded with carbohydrates, gluten, and sugar.
As you’ll learn below, the only problem is finding bacon and hot dogs that are void of those ingredients.
Wrap a hot dog with puff pastry, brush with butter, and bake in the oven.
We ALWAYS have hot dogs in the freezer at our house, but mostly Schneider’s Juicy Jumbos.
Occasionally, I enjoy hot dogs for lunch or dinner because it’s easy.
Last week, we came up with the idea of a loaded cheesy bacon-wrapped Pigs In A Blanket recipe.
However, the Schneiders’ hot dogs we use have sugar and three net carbs each.
These hot dogs are in the top category for those who aren’t worried about gluten and carbs.
If you opt for the regular small Schneider’s hotdogs, nutritionally, they have two net carbs each and 1 g of sugar.
What Kinds Of Hot Dogs Are Keto?
This is a good question since Schneider’s Juicy Jumbo hot dogs have three net carbs and 3 grams of sugar.
Are they keto-friendly?
Well, staying away from processed foods such as hot dogs, bacon, and luncheon meat has been suggested for the keto diet.
Various professionals and online doctors say hot dogs are fine, and others are a hard no.
You can read the nutritional info for all of Schneider’s hot dogs on their website.
INGREDIENTS: Pork, chicken; water, dextrose, salt, potassium lactate, corn syrup solids, sodium phosphate, sodium diacetate, garlic powder, sodium erythorbate, spice, sodium nitrite, smoke.
We used these hot dogs for this recipe since we buy them primarily for our little guy.
This is the only brand he will eat, and he has a sensory processing disorder.
He would decline eating before eating something he didn’t want.
I’ve also wrapped one hot dog in bacon, like I did with the four dogs.
You can use singles or wrap it big to split as appetizers or between two people.
This still does not remove the fact that they use sugar in their hot dogs.
The point is to read all product labels when buying products that you think are keto.
The Best Keto Hot Dogs I’ve found.
The best types of hot dogs will be found at local family-run farms, specialty grocery store hot dogs, or the butcher.
I’ve read many nutritional labels for hot dogs from Ontario grocery stores.
So far, I’ve found only two that I’d consider eating if I were on a keto diet.
Go for all-beef hot dogs that are uncured, no-sugar-added, or grass-fed.
You can also tap into sausages for this recipe, but again, read the ingredients and nutrition label.
Beretta Organic Hot Dogs found at Zehrs in Canada are probably the best at the grocery store.
Note the potato starch, which is likely where the 1 g of carbohydrates comes from.
NUTRITION FACTS & INGREDIENTS
- Serving Size grams 50 g
Ingredients:
ORGANIC BEEF, WATER, ORGANIC POTATO STARCH, SEA SALT, CULTURED CELERY JUICE POWDER, ORGANIC SPICES, NATURAL SMOKE FLAVOUR, ORGANIC GARLIC POWDER, ORGANIC ONION, NATURALLY SMOKED.
The same goes for the bacon, which can be loaded with sugar, so look around for bacon with no added sugar or talk to your local butcher.
You may also find the butcher has the keto hot dogs you want.
Freybe European Wieners
I found Freybe European wieners at Metro Canada, which have 1g net carbs, which would work for keto.
It is labelled with zero sugar; however, dextrose and glucose are listed in the ingredients.
The amount is so small that it is negligible for the nutrition label.
Will it kick you out of ketosis?
I’m not sure, but the only way to know is to check your blood ketones after you’ve eaten one.
Find more information about testing your blood ketones with a monitor and strips.
Either way, choose what types of hot dogs are suitable for a keto diet.
How To Make Bacon Cheese Pigs In A Blanket
I added a homemade keto mayonnaise along with sugar-free ketchup for dips.
You don’t need any condiments on the side, but I’m a bit of a crazy guy with them.
If you do, remember to add the net carbs of the condiments if you count macros.
Bacon Cheese Pigs In A Blanket (Keto + Non-Keto)
These are my version of Pigs In A Blanket for those of you who are on a keto diet or for those who are not. Inside is a gooey Italian mozzarella with bacon wrapped around the hot dogs. You can make 1 hot dog or 4 as I've done.
Ingredients
- 4 hotdogs of your choice
- 4 Slices of Bacon
- 4 Slices of Italian Mozarella Cheese
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 325 degrees
- Lay 4 hot dogs on a cutting board
- Add sliced mozzarella in the middle
- Pick up all four hot dogs and form a circle
- Bacon wrap the hot dogs
- Set on a parchment-lined baking sheet
- Bake for around 20 minutes until the bacon is crispy or however you like it cooked.
Notes
You do not need to use four hot dogs.
Use toothpicks to help keep the hot dogs together.
Use the same process with one hot dog or even two at a time.
Serve hot which the cheese is gooey or microwave the next day.
Sausages are also an excellent alternative for this recipe.
Discussion: What other suggestions do you have for finding a keto hot dog in Canada? If you are not Keto, what are some of your favourite hot dogs in Canada?
Leave me your comments below, as I’d be interested in updating the post if we have other options I’m unaware of.
