Bacon Cheese Pigs In A Blanket (Keto + Non-Keto)

This is NOT your ordinary Pigs In A Blanket recipe, it’s BETTER.

The ooey-gooey Italian Saputo mozzarella cheese melts perfectly in the middle of the bacon-wrapped hotdogs.

Making Pigs In A Blanket my way is fairly straightforward that even teenagers interested in cooking can help.

Keto and Non-Keto Pigs In A Blanket stuffed with mozzarella cheese and wrapped in bacon then baked until a crispy perfection.

Original Pigs In A Blanket

Classic Pigs In A Blanket are wrapped in some form of puff pastry or crescent roll dough such as Pillsbury.

However, I wanted to create a mildly keto-friendly version of Pigs In A Blanket that is not loaded with carbohydrates, gluten, and sugar.

The only problem is finding bacon and hotdogs that are void of those ingredients as you’ll learn below.

Wrap a hotdog with puff pastry, brush with butter and bake in the oven.

At our house, we ALWAYS have hotdogs in the freezer but mostly Schneider’s Juicy Jumbos.

On occasion I enjoy hotdogs for lunch or dinner because it’s easy.

Last week we came up with the idea of a loaded cheesy bacon-wrapped Pigs In A Blanket recipe.

However, the Schneider’s hotdogs we use have sugar and 3 net carbs each.

These hotdogs are up on the top best category for those of you reading that isn’t worried about gluten and carbs.

If you opt for the regular small Schneider’s hotdogs nutritionally they have 2 net carbs each and 1 g of sugar.

What Kinds Of Hotdogs Are Keto?

Cheese and Bacon Pigs In A Blanket Keto and Non-Keto

This is a good question since Schneider’s Juicy Jumbo hotdogs have 3 net carbs and 3 grams of sugar.

Are they keto-friendly?

Well, staying away from processed foods such as hotdogs, bacon, luncheon meat has been suggested for the keto diet.

You’ll find various professionals and online doctors who say hotdogs are fine and others are a hard no.

You can read the nutritional info for all Schneider’s hotdogs on their website.

INGREDIENTS: Pork, chicken; water, dextrose, salt, potassium lactate, corn syrup solids, sodium phosphate, sodium diacetate, garlic powder, sodium erythorbate, spice, sodium nitrite, smoke.

For this recipe, we did use these hotdogs since we buy them primarily for our little guy.

This is the only brand he will eat and since he has a sensory processing disorder.

He would decline eating before he ate something he didn’t want to eat.

I’ve also bacon-wrapped one hotdog the same way as I did with the 4 hotdogs.

You can use singles or wrap it big to split as appetizers or between two people.

This still does not take away the fact that they use sugar in their hotdogs.

Point being, read all product labels when you are buying products which you think are keto.

The Best Keto Hotdogs I’ve found

The best types of hotdogs will be found at local family-run farms, specialty grocery store hotdogs, or the butcher.

I’ve read loads of nutritional labels from Ontario grocery stores for hotdogs.

So far I’ve found only 2 I’d consider eating if I was on a keto diet.

Go for all-beef hotdogs that are uncured, no-sugar-added, or grass-fed.

You can also tap into sausages for this recipe but again read the ingredients and nutrition label.

Beretta Organic Beef Hotdogs

Beretta Organic Hot Dogs found at Zehrs in Canada are probably the best we’ve found at the grocery store.

Note the potato starch which is likely where the 1 g of carbohydrates is coming from.

NUTRITION FACTS & INGREDIENTS

  • Serving Size grams 50 g

Ingredients:

ORGANIC BEEF, WATER, ORGANIC POTATO STARCH, SEA SALT, CULTURED CELERY JUICE POWDER, ORGANIC SPICES, NATURAL SMOKE FLAVOUR, ORGANIC GARLIC POWDER, ORGANIC ONION, NATURALLY SMOKED.

The same goes for the bacon which can be loaded with sugar so look around for bacon with no added sugar or talk to your local butcher.

You may also find that the butcher has the keto hotdogs you are looking for.

Freybe European Wieners

I found Freybe European wieners at Metro Canada which have 1g net carbs which would work for keto.

It is labelled with zero sugar however I do see dextrose and glucose listed in the ingredients.

My guess is the amount is so small that makes it negligible for the nutrition label.

Will it kick you out of ketosis?

I’m not sure but the only way is to know is to check your blood ketones after you’ve eaten one.

Find more info here about testing your blood ketones with a monitor and strips.

Either way, make an informed choice of what types of hotdogs are good for a keto diet.

How To Make Bacon Cheese Pigs In A Blanket

I added a homemade keto mayonnaise along with sugar-free ketchup for dips.

You don’t need to have any condiments on the side but I’m a bit of a crazy guy with them.

If you do just remember to add the net carbs of the condiments if you count macros.
