The Grocery Game Challenge May 27-June 2, 2013 #4:Shopping Hungry

The Grocery Game Challenge #4 May

Grocery shopping problem number 1, shopping hungry which should be a big no-no for everyone, and I’ll tell you why. This weeks Grocery Game Challenge (GGC)#4 shop was only supposed to be $11.18 or less. We would have accomplished our grocery budget for May but we needed some fresh produce. We did manage to get some really cheap food, but we went over budget again.

Grocery Shop Planning

It’s been such a busy week for us with our dog being ill there wasn’t much meal planning going on so a half arsed grocery list was made last-minute using the flyers and coupon match-ups. I was hoping we could pull off the month of May under budget as we had already carried over from April. I thought with some cheap food shopping and using up what we had that we would make it but we didn’t. It’s a no-win this month but it’s not as bad as you think. I still think we did well.

Trying to buy cheap food on a budget such as fresh foods and vegetables is not that difficult this time of year which makes it easy to do healthy food shopping even when it’s not planned. You will see we managed to get lots of fruits and vegetables this shop as well as a couple of dozen eggs.

We’ve worked so hard to get caught up this week, I’m still not sure I’m going to make it. I’ve already lost a few pounds as I’ve had to tighten a couple of notches in my belt this month. I’m pretty back to my weight when I smoked although I didn’t have much to lose so I won’t moan about it.  We’ve been working on eating less like I mentioned in last weeks GGC post and it’s been working well for the both of us.

My Grocery Shopping Problem

My problem is shopping on an empty stomach because my eyes take over and I want to eat everything in sight. Since we didn’t have a full grocery list we ended up buying too much food and now we have more than we bargained for. I will say that Zehrs is by far one of the best grocery stores to shop at when you are hungry. It’s clean, organized and offers us way too many foods and smells that entice us to buy more. I did have a box of Chapman’s ice-cream sandwiches in the grocery cart but I ended up putting it back once I found the cheap Liberte yogurt with %50 off tickets.

Pink sticker shopping is budget grocery shopping at it’s best and even when you shop hungry you know that going over budget is the easiest way to blow the budget. We didn’t do too bad today but I wanted to get strawberries to make some strawberry muffins loaded with a cream cheese and cool-whip (my neighbour gave to us as they cleaned out their freezer and didn’t want it) so I could enjoy one with my tea and bring a couple to our neighbours. (speaking of which I think I might go have a bowl with fresh fruit now)

Shopping hungry at lunch time was probably not the best time to go grocery shopping as my stomach was rumbling. You will see I picked up some great deals on chicken thighs and chicken mince which I didn’t think were too bad of a price. I found lots of food for cheap but it’s a good thing the wife told me enough we better get home as she knew I was hungry.

I’ve just not had good eating practices this week as I should have been so I’m paying the price and I’m not myself this week. I’m trying to get back on track now because shopping hungry is the worst thing I can do especially if saving money on food is your goal. I know this but I did it anyway so shame on me.

Tips For Saving Money At The Grocery Store

My plan to solve shopping hungry is to do the common sense thing and eat something. I’d rather spend a couple of dollars to buy a sandwich and a fruit if I’m on the road and have no snacks with me than to go grocery shopping with a stomach that is rumbling and eyes bigger than head.

If I do go shopping again without eating I’m going to focus on sticking to the plan while keeping healthy food shopping on the brain. I will avoid all snack aisles which we already do but just continue to ignore them like they are not there. Lastly, I think if we reiterate to ourselves in our head why we are purchasing something and why we may or may not need it that will help us come to a proper decision.

Saving money on food shopping always brings with it challenges and this is why the grocery game is so important for us. Without coming back home to go over our shops and our purchases we don’t learn from our mistakes, we just brush them off as if they don’t matter at all.

Question: Do you shop hungry and what tips do you have for others? What is the craziest foods you’ve bought when shopping hungry?

  1. I really try to avoid shopping hungry, because I know that I will end up buying so much random stuff that I normally don´t eat. I tend to buy junk food and chocolates. which is the exact same things that I try to avoid. Junk food is always a no no, and chocolate is only for weekends.

i love this grocery game, it helps me keep on track on what and how much i spend on grocery! i am so happy that i got back here!! i belong here :D

i go shopping after breakfast or after lunch, so i don’t shop when i am hungry! i also bring a nutri grain bar with me when i go in the afternoon because i usually get hungry around 3 or 4 oclock. By the time i get hungry, i should have finished walking all the aisles LOL. so i don’t have that problem. lucky me.

I didn’t post my shop last week, so i am posting them together this time. it might look like i have over $68 left in our budget this month, BUT we haven’t gone to get meat yet, we usually spend about $50 at that butcher in Hamilton, so we are just OK this month. (we go to that butcher once a month when we go and see husband’s uncle, this butcher is like half price for everything, so we stock up for meat for a month every time we go there. If you happen to be in Hamilton area, go to Farmer Al’s and you won’t regret! here’s their website http://www.farmerals.ca)

    • Hey Wing!
Thanks for the kind words. Next weeks GGC will be all about the best times to shop and ways to fight the hunger so thanks for your tips. If you can get half price meat I will get lots, that’s a great deal. Considering this is 2 weeks shopping you did very well. You have $68 left to spend for the month and I think you will nail your budget if you shop carefully. I may be in Hamilton in June or August so I will check it out. thanks for the link. Keep up the good work Wing!! Mr.CBB you get ballot 24 Oh.. is there any popular Asian markets in Hamilton you suggest?

  3. Sometimes I eat a snack in the car on the way to the grocery store! Just a few nuts or crackers. Otherwise it is after work and I feel like I “deserve” all kinds of things!

    • That’s a great tip and I’m betting loads of people do what you do. Next week I’ll be talking about shopping after work and the consequences of those actions if not prepared. Cheers and thanks for dropping in!! Mr.CBB

  4. I always have a can of smoked almonds and a can of V-8 juice in the glove compartment because of my diabetes so shopping hungry is less of a problem for me in that I am like a boy scout… always prepared. :-)

Now, those pink stickers are hard to resist whether the item is on my list or not. :-( I guess I am a sucker for a good sale!

  5. Mr CBB… how much did you start the month over? If I am not mistaken you still managed to eat up 50% of April’s overage this month. Didn’t you?

  6. Christine Weadick says:

We all try to hit the budget…. So far I’m on track but it may not last. Hubby is talking about going to Stratford to get some whey protein that he’s been taking. The last can of it we got in London at the hospital pharmacy but we don’t go there until June 19 and he wants it now… I’m within $10.00 of hitting it for the week and the month. Wish me luck if he comes with me…. I’ll have to keep an eye out for the Dove body wash coupon!!!! I found a new one for Schweppes (diet) ginger ale, club soda and tonic water on the inside of the box the pop comes in… $2.00 off exp. Dec 31, 2013. So I’ll be checking the cases over before I buy them so I get my coupons.
I definitely try to have something to eat before I go for groceries. Leaving hubby at home helps too.

  7. I shop like a stoner when I hit the store hungry. Somehow, Bagel Bites and Pizza Rolls always end up in my cart when hungry. So I definitely feel for you in overspending on an empty stomach. It will give you a challenge to stay under budget for next time though.

  8. It looks like you are doing pretty good overall. I might give the game a try next month. I’m moving out of my apartment at the end of June and I’d like to use up all my food.

  9. Shopping while hungry has never been a huge problem for me because I tend to stick with the same types of food each week. I don’t buy any type of junk food so it’s never really been a problem. Of course a lot of my “usual food” is not always on sale, so I don’t get nearly the great shopping prices you get!

    IN CLOSING:

This week was supposed to be a NO SHOP WEEK here in Canada but we had a chance to get a couple of desserts cheaply that will work for taking to get-togethers so I tapped into my hiding spot cash. Also, Safeway had a box of 20 frozen burgers on sale for $10 but I told hubby the grocery budget was broke… and he paid for a box of burgers out of his spending money. What a sweetheart!

This week also had a coupon for ribs at Safeway at $4 off and since they were out of stock, we got a rain check good for 90 days at the sale! We had ribs on hand so I was hoping that they would still be out of stock on the last day of the sale. I was really pleased to get the rain check and lock in the sale price for when we actually needed them. Yay!

I pushed our US shopping back AGAIN because the border line-ups were nasty this morning. I’ll go on Tuesday – which is one of the fresh bread days at Franz bakery outlet anyway. This also gives me a chance to make us a nice Sunday supper. :-D

We did finish up with a $0.16 grocery overage this month that we will be carrying forward into June reducing our available June grocery budget… but making sure we stay on track for the year. :-( So close!

June is going to be a HUGE challenge for us though because I need $120 of our total $190 grocery budget for the entire month just to do my annual borscht stockpile purchase. That leaves me a grand total of $69.84 for shopping and stockpiling for the entire month of June! Think I can do it??? It’s gonna be interesting!

    Here’s how May finished up:

    Grocery Budget (CDN): $0.16 OVER
    Stockpile Budget (CDN): $0.00
    Safeway Gift card (CDN): $20.00
    Cash Hiding Spot (CDN): $21.51

    • Hi Mary,
Oh oh, you got into your hiding spot lol…. what a nice guy .. Larry I commend you. Sounds like you picked up some great deals on meat this week so I can see why you wanted to jump in and make use of the sales. You had $0.16 overage.. oh Mary, you are brilliant when it comes to numbers. I really hope we can get our budget back on track in June. I think you can do it… actually I know you can do it!!! So I was under for this week but over in total for the month. This is the closest I’ve been since Feb. and except for Feb it is the lowest month so far this year. I was OK until I had to go in on Thursday again… that hurt….and I did get as little as I could believe it or not. I had a big shop yesterday that doesn’t leave me a lot of room for the rest of this week but we shall see how close I can make it. What’s really going to hurt is I have been cleaning out the freezers and the pantry quite a bit lately trying to come in under budget so things there are getting thin. June will be picking strawberries for jam for the year, I already have lots of sugar, the Certo Light I use and the only other thing will be getting some more snap lids for the jars themselves. It’s so worth the time and effort!!! But I did make it under for the week by a nice amount…. technically if you figure the $150.00 I try for but I didn’t have quite that much left in the budget. If I can run a few more weeks like that I can come in under for the month and put a dent in the overage….. This is what I’m going to aim for over the next while….. come in under for the week and work off that overage. It won’t be easy….. nothing ever is but I have my target and my aim is slowly getting a little better each try…..

    • Hi Christine,
You did awesome this month Christine!! ONLY $5 over budget I’m so amazed at that. You are doing much better lets see if you can continue it throught the next month. We make our own crab apple jelly and it’s worth it as well although we are well stocked for a year or so now lol. I think that is a good idea. • Hey Pauline,
What do you make with the beef tongue? Your bananas are so cheap. Are all of these vegetables you buy considered organic? Do you get the dry chick peas? How do you prepare them? I put them dry in my crockpot then top with water and cook on high for 3-4 hours. Haha.. their loss is your gain. I saw avocados here for $2.00 each….. so you are getting a very good deal. What happens in avocado season.. they get cheaper? You need your own avocado tree. You can count your month however you do. When you post just say it’s one week in June or whenever your shops fall. You don’t have to follow mine exactly… just post as you would if you were budgeting on your end.. oh oh… I said the b word!!! How will you account for the overspend this month for July? Cheers mate…

      • Noooooo, not the B word!! haha. I will keep rolling over the overspend to the next month to see how long it takes to get back in the black and back to $200 per month.
BF cut the beef tongue in small pieces with vegetables and garlic, a little olive oil and a bit of water, he made some kind of stew. It smelled good but I have too graphic memories of the tongue in my childhood when my father would cook it and I hated it. I think most of the veggies are organic, most farmers just put manure on it although apparently the ministry of agriculture is giving cheap fertilizers. So I don’t really know but they taste awesome. Much better than in France. And yes I get dry chick peas, I leave them in water overnight to save on cooking time, but they still take a good 2 hours. I wonder why so long!
Avocados are usually around 40p. In season they drop to 20p or even lower. BF has an avocado tree in his ranch but he doesn’t remember the exact time for this tree and I have never seen it with avocados, he says it lasts only 3 weeks and as we go every 6 weeks or so we have always missed it. This year I’ll try not to miss and come back with a full trunk! Do you think they freeze well?

        • Do you have a slow cooker? If you do put them in the slow cooker for 3 hours and forget about them. That’s what I do. I hate watching the stove. I’m not into the tongue either but I’m sure it’s a delicacy. Avocados for 40p are not bad at all. They were 2/$3.00 the other day but good ones. You are lucky. Have you made chocolate pudding with avocado yet? Just add some chocolate cocoa powder to it and mix it up… that’s what I was told. My neighbour made it and it was amazing, tastes like chocolate pudding. If you can take a picture of the avocado tree I would love to see what it looks like. Yes avocados freeze well I read that the other day on my Facebook page. I think maybe Mary might know, I forget now where I read it.

•Weekly overview: I stayed under budget this week thank goodness. I’m hoping to get back under control this month! I’m not happy with myself at all.

    • Hey Jen,
This GGC is over but that’s ok you still need to track and that’s what’s important here. I wonder why they would sell off the baby food with a long expiry unless there is a label change coming. You are so giving! I think keeping June under will be a good test of your ability to withold making purchases and you will really find out where you need to improve. It’s not easy playing catch up especially when you’ve spent money you haven’t got in the grocery budget, technically. I guess the same can be said about anything in the budget that is not accounted for then we have to make up for the overspend. It sucks but working on spending less is the only way out in my opinion… we’ve made these mistakes and are working on it with our GGC. Last month was awful shopping with hardly any budget but that was our own fault. Keep at for June Jen!! You get ballot 5
