Fall Front Porch Decor Ideas on a Budget

Decorating your front porch for fall doesn’t have to mean spending hundreds of dollars on pumpkins, signs, wreaths and seasonal decorations.

Some of the best fall front porch decor ideas are inexpensive because they use items you already own, decorations you can reuse year after year and natural elements that bring autumn colour to your home.

Our fall porch decorating started quite simply—with a couple of mums.

I bought Mrs. CBB two beautiful mums from Food Basics because I knew how much she loved them. Once she had the mums, she started thinking about how she wanted to decorate our front porch for fall.

Mrs. CBB’s mum also enjoyed decorating and making a home feel welcoming, so seasonal decorating brings back memories of her and the little touches she would add around the home.

You don’t need a magazine-worthy front porch or a huge decorating budget to create that same welcoming feeling. Whether you have a large covered porch, a small front step or just enough room beside your door for a planter, you can decorate for fall without blowing your household budget.

How to Decorate a Fall Front Porch Without Overspending

Before buying anything, decide how much you’re comfortable spending. Seasonal decor can be sneaky because $10 and $20 purchases quickly add up.

Walk through your home, garage, basement or storage area first and see what you already have. Outdoor lanterns, baskets, plant pots, wooden crates, neutral outdoor cushions, old watering cans, decorative signs, artificial greenery and wreaths from previous years can all become part of a fall display.

Start with those pieces and then decide what your porch actually needs. This prevents you from walking into a store and buying an entirely new fall decorating collection every year.

1. Start With What You Already Own

One of the cheapest ways to decorate your front porch for fall is to shop your home first. A basket that normally holds blankets indoors might temporarily hold fall greenery. An outdoor lantern can be surrounded by a few pumpkins. An old wooden crate can become a stand for a mum.

You don’t necessarily need decorations that say “fall” on them. Neutral pieces are often the best investment because you can use them throughout several seasons.

2. Decorate With Fall Mums

Mums are one of our favourite ways to add instant fall colour to the front of the house. They come in beautiful autumn colours, including yellow, orange, red, burgundy, pink and white.

You also don’t need six enormous pots of mums to make an impact. One or two healthy plants near the front door can provide plenty of colour, especially when paired with pumpkins or decorations you already own.

Before buying mums, compare prices and look carefully at the plants. A plant covered in unopened buds may give you a longer display than one that is already completely in bloom. If you already own decorative planters, consider placing the nursery pot inside rather than purchasing another seasonal container.

3. Use Pumpkins Without Going Overboard

Pumpkins are one of the easiest ways to tell everyone that fall has arrived, but you don’t need twenty pumpkins cascading down the front steps. A few strategically placed pumpkins can look just as attractive.

Mixing different sizes can create visual interest without requiring a huge number of them. You may also find less-than-perfect pumpkins discounted at grocery stores, garden centres or farm markets. If you’re using pumpkins strictly as decorations, a small blemish may not matter.

4. Keep Your Fall Porch Simple

Sometimes simple fall porch decor looks better than trying to fill every available space. Choose a focal point such as a colourful mum, fall wreath, small group of pumpkins, lantern, decorative basket or seasonal doormat, and build around it.

Leaving some empty space also makes a small porch feel less cluttered. You don’t have to compete with elaborate front porches you see online. Decorate your home in a way that makes you happy and works with your budget.

5. Fall Decor Ideas for a Small Front Porch

You can still decorate for fall even if your “porch” is really just a front step. Instead of decorating outward, think vertically. A wreath on the door adds fall colour without using floor space. Place one mum beside the door and add one or two small pumpkins.

A taller planter can also create impact without taking up much room. For a very small entrance, that may be all you need—and that can also save money.

6. Transition From Fall to Halloween

One way to stretch your decorating budget is to create a basic fall porch first and then add a few Halloween decorations in October. Your mums, pumpkins, baskets, lanterns and other autumn decorations can stay exactly where they are.

Add inexpensive Halloween touches such as a reusable sign, artificial spider webs, bats or decorations you’ve saved from previous years. After Halloween, remove those pieces and your regular fall porch is back. That means you aren’t buying two completely different sets of seasonal decorations.

7. Look for Thrifted and Second-Hand Fall Decor

Before paying full retail price for seasonal decorations, check thrift stores, garage sales and online marketplaces. Baskets, lanterns, fall wreaths, artificial pumpkins, wooden signs, outdoor planters and decorative containers can often be reused for years.

I particularly like looking for items that aren’t overly seasonal. A good lantern or basket can work for fall, Christmas, spring and summer simply by changing what you put around it.

8. Make Your Own Fall Decorations

DIY fall decor doesn’t have to involve an elaborate craft project. An old wreath can be refreshed rather than replaced. A basket can be filled with artificial leaves you’ve saved from previous years. An existing container can be repurposed into a fall planter, and a tired decorative sign may be something you can repaint.

Before throwing away seasonal decor because you’re bored with it, ask whether you can change it. Sometimes a small update is all it needs.

9. Check Dollar Stores Before Paying More

Dollar stores can be useful for inexpensive seasonal decorations, but don’t assume everything there is automatically a bargain. Look at the quality and ask yourself whether you will use the item again next year.

Buying ten inexpensive decorations you don’t particularly like isn’t necessarily better than buying one reusable item you love. The same rule applies everywhere: buy intentionally rather than buying something simply because it’s cheap.

10. Use Free Natural Fall Decorations

Some fall decorations don’t need to come from a store at all. Depending on what is available where you live, fallen branches, pinecones, colourful leaves, twigs and dried flowers from your garden can add autumn colour for almost nothing.

Use only materials you’re allowed to collect, and don’t take plants or natural materials from private property or protected areas.

Fall Porch Decor on a $25, $50 or $100 Budget

$25 Fall Porch Budget

Use almost everything you already own and spend your money on one or two fresh seasonal items. You might buy a mum and a couple of pumpkins while reusing your existing planter, wreath or lantern.

$50 Fall Porch Budget

With a little more room in the budget, you might purchase two mums, several pumpkins or one reusable decor item. Look for sales and second-hand finds before paying full price.

$100 Fall Porch Budget

If you’re starting with very little seasonal decor, a larger budget can help you build a collection. Concentrate on reusable items rather than spending the entire $100 on decorations that will be discarded at the end of the season.

These dollar amounts aren’t shopping lists or a challenge to spend the full amount. They’re maximum budgets. If you can create a porch you love for $20, keep the other $80 in your bank account.

What Fall Porch Decorations Are Worth Buying?

When we’re spending money on seasonal decor, I think the best value comes from items that can be reused. Before buying something, ask yourself: Will I still want to use this three or five years from now?

Classic items tend to have more staying power than trendy seasonal decorations. Neutral baskets, lanterns, planters and simple wreaths can also be restyled instead of replaced.

Shop End-of-Season Fall Clearance

If there’s something you’d like for next year, check clearance sections as retailers begin changing over to Christmas merchandise. You may find seasonal items marked down substantially.

The catch is that you have to be disciplined. A 70% discount isn’t a bargain if you’re buying something you don’t need.

How to Store Fall Porch Decorations

Proper storage helps make seasonal decorating cheaper over the long term. Clean and completely dry reusable decorations before putting them away. Keep smaller fall items together in a clearly labelled storage container so you don’t forget what you own.

Take a quick photo of your fall decor before packing everything away. Next September, you’ll be able to see exactly what you own before heading to the stores.

A Beautiful Fall Porch Doesn’t Need a Big Budget

I enjoy seeing beautifully decorated front porches, but I don’t think creating one should become another financial pressure.

For us, something as simple as Mrs. CBB’s mums can bring fall colour to the front of our home and inspire the rest of the display. The memories attached to seasonal traditions are worth far more than the decorations themselves. That’s especially true when a flower, decoration or family tradition reminds us of someone important, such as Mrs. CBB’s mum.

Start with what you already have. Add a few affordable seasonal touches. Reuse what you can. And don’t worry about whether your porch looks like somebody else’s.

Your fall front porch should welcome you home—not leave you wondering how much money you spent decorating it.
