Simple Keto Chaffle Waffles 10 Ways
WELCOME THE CHAFFLE TO THE KETO WORLD OF GOOD EATS
The very first thing everyone says is, “What’s a Keto Chaffle?” as did I when I first came across it on social media.
All of a sudden last week we started to see photos of a Chaffle pronounced CHAW-FULL like WAFFLE.
What Is A Chaffle?
The meaning behind the name Chaffle is a spin on three ingredients, eggs with shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheese.
So, it’s a Cheese and Egg Waffle called a Keto Chaffle.
I’m unsure who created the Chaffle name or recipe as I can’t really find an actual recipe just people sharing what ingredients they’ve tried.
Whether you’re in the mood for a savory or sweet chaffle you can easily create custom chaffles for everyone in your family.
Replace Bread With A Chaffle
The great thing about the Chaffle is that it replaces bread so it’s perfect as a burger bun, sandwich bun, breakfast sandwich bread.
You can even toast it and add butter and a sugar-free jam to your Keto Chaffle.
The possibilities are endless which is why I believe the Chaffle has lit up the keto world over the past week.
Making keto bread is a bit time-consuming so gluten-free breads like cloud bread (Oopsie Bread), 90 second Keto mug biscuit and the Keto Chaffle are perfect for those on the go.
Chaffle Variations – With and Without Almond Flour
There have been two variations of the Chaffle recipe floating around mainly people exploring ingredient combinations.
You can either just use eggs and shredded cheese to make a chaffle or eggs, shredded cheese, almond flour, and baking powder.
Of course, you can add any spices you like to your chaffle recipe you’ll find that they both are delicious.
We did find that adding the 1 tablespoon of almond flour to the recipe along with the baking powder significantly increased the size and soft texture.
The Keto Pizza Chaffle Waffle
For our pizza chaffle waffle, we used only eggs and no almond flour and found it to be light and fluffy but equally as delicious.
It was perfectly crispy on the outside, full of pizza flavour and melted mozzarella. So good!
The pizza chaffle waffle below has fried ham pieces in butter, pepperoni slices pre-fried in a bit of butter, spring onion, egg, pink salt, homemade pizza sauce, garlic, fresh basil, and only shredded mozzarella cheese.
We did not use cheddar cheese in the pizza chaffle waffle since we find it can get oily.
You could easily replace the cheddar in the original chaffle waffle recipe below and only use mozzarella cheese instead.
I think that would be one of our favourites but it’s up to you how you like your chaffle waflle texture and flavours.
How To Make The Pizza Chaffle Waffle
- Put two eggs and salt in a bowl and mix
- Add 1 cup Italian mozzarella shredded cheese to a bowl
- Fry 1/2 cup of ham or bacon chunks
- Fry 10 pieces of pepperoni or salami in butter
- Add 1/4 cup pizza sauce, 1 tbsp basil, 1 clove minced garlic and one minced spring onion to the cooled ham chunks and mix
- Spray the waffle iron with non-stick cooking spray when heated
- Add a bit of mozzarella to the griddle
- Top with 1/2 the egg mixture
- Add the ham and pepperoni
- Top with the rest of the egg
- Finish it with the rest of the mozzarella cheese
Close and cook until the waffle is golden brown.
Note: You do not need baking powder when you don’t use the almond flour.
Serve with more Italian pizza sauce or any dipping sauce that you like.
Hazelnut Chocolate Pecan Chaffle Waffle
This is another of our signature dessert chaffle waffle favourites because it’s drizzled with sugar-free creamy Nuti-Lit a dark hazelnut chocolate which we buy from Amazon Canada.
It tastes exactly like Nutella!
We also add sugar-free syrup and a big dollop of melting butter in the middle.
Another fun sweet option is to add Fatso Salted Caramel Peanut Butter with Sugar-Free Syrup.
Oh, so good!
Homemade BBQ Burger On A Chaffle Waffle
The great thing about a Chaffle Waffle is that you can use it for both sweet and savory.
We often use it in place of bread or keto tortillas as it has a lower carb count and tastes delicious.
Adding almond flour to the chaffle recipe offers more of a waffle consistency as opposed to an omelet and cheese chaffle.
The choice is yours how you choose to make your chaffle so I’d certainly say to experiment with making the recipe both ways.
Chicken Wing and Sugar-Free Syrup Chaffle Waffle
When making your Chaffle I have two important tips:
- Always coat your waffle machine with a keto-approved cooking spray even if it says it’s non-stick
- Leave your chaffle in for minimum 3-5 minutes if you want a nice crust or crispy texture on the outside and soft in the middle
Best Waffle Machine To Make A Chaffle
The Dash Mini Waffle machine seems to be the big rage in the keto world right now because it is portable and makes a perfectly round mini chaffle.
At only $25 on Amazon Canada, I’d say that’s a bargain if you’re someone who wants to try making a chaffle or two.
The cool thing about the mini Dash waffle maker is that you can make single-serve chaffle sandwiches.
You can also make a pile of mini keto chaffles and freeze them and take them out as needed.

If you don’t own a waffle machine and want to make this chaffle recipe I’d say go for the Dash mini waffle machine.
Strawberry Keto Chaffle Waffles with Sugar-Free Condensed Milk, Maple Syrup and Whipped Cream
I will be sharing my Keto Condensed Milk recipe shortly and will link it here as soon as I do.
In the meantime, I wanted you to see another way you can enjoy your chaffle waffles.
This chaffle waffle has sliced fresh strawberries with cinnamon along with keto condensed milk, whipped cream, and maple syrup.
If you wanted the chaffle waffle to be strawberry rather than slicing fresh strawberries on top you can do that as well.
Simply chop your strawberries into small pieces and add them to the waffle batter. Ta-da!
It’s amazing an amazing creation if you are looking for a fruity version.
You could also drizzle keto strawberry, blueberry or mulberry jam over top.
Almond Flour For Keto Chaffle Making
What type of Almond Flour should you use?
When trying to decide which almond flour to use on a keto diet stick to brands that say, almond flour and not almond meal.
Almond meal is still good to use in certain recipes but I find it to be too chunky as it’s not a flour consistency.
We typically buy Bob Mills Almond Flour 435 grams or Kirkland Almond Flour which we buy at Costco Canada or you can buy it on Amazon Canada for $31.99 which is almost double the price.
You get 1.36 kg for $31.99 unless you can get a bag at Costco for $16.99 however not everyone has Costco available to them.
Cheese For Keto Chaffle Making
I’ve tried making this recipe a few ways over the past week and the best for us is using just shredded Salerno Italian mozzarella.
We buy our mozzarella at Costco for $20.99 for 2kg which is an amazing price compared to the grocery store.
You can use the original mixture of 1:1 shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheese as per my recipe below.
Although, mixing both the mozzarella and the old cheddar cheese tends to balance out the flavours and the texture of the Chaffle.
I guess it depends on the quality of cheese you use as well so try the chaffle waffles both ways and see which you like better.
We buy bricks of cheese for our keto diet because some pre-shredded cheeses have added starch and other ingredients to help the cheese last longer.
Always read the ingredient list if you go the shredded route to make sure there are no added carbs that are used to coat the cheese.
The cheddar cheese that we used for this particular recipe was a Black Diamond Old Cheddar that we shredded ourselves.
Try Other Keto Recipes In The Waffle Machine
I’m almost betting you could also get away with adding some soft cream cheese to the egg mixture as you would make keto pancakes.
I haven’t tried it yet but I will and am certain you’d still end up with a delicious chaffle or even the oopsie bread recipe.
The cream cheese would be in addition to the mozzarella and cheddar cheese for any of you willing to try that method out.
Keto Cinnamon Roll Chaffle Waffles
Another method of Chaffle making is creating a sweet keto dessert chaffle by adding cinnamon or a keto-approved sweetener to the batter.
One of our favourites is the Keto Cinnamon Roll Chaffle Waffle which tastes like a cinnamon roll bun.
Using the same basic chaffle waffles recipe add a 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon to the batter.
Top the cinnamon chaffle waffle with sugar-free maple syrup and a cinnamon roll icing.
How To Make Keto Sugar-Free Cinnamon Roll Icing
We made our cinnamon roll icing with 1 tablespoon cinnamon, 1 tablespoon heavy whipping cream and 2 Tablespoons keto-approved sweetener. Mix until combined.
If you find it is a bit thin sit it in the freezer for a bit and it will thicken. If it needs additional whipping cream to add it sparingly until you get the correct consistency if you use a different sweetener other than Swerve.
Take the toppings a step further and splash colour by adding fresh berries or a keto jam like our mulberry jam or homemade strawberry rhubarb chia jam.
How To Make Keto Pumpkin Spice Chaffle Waffles
Below are two other keto chaffles that we created using the basic chaffle waffles recipe below and added to it.
- Pumpkin Spice Chaffle Waffles (add 1 tbsp pumpkin puree, 1 tsp pumpkin spice or pumpkin spice sugar-free syrup)
- Pumpkin Spice Chocolate Chip Chaffle Waffles (add 1 tbsp pumpkin puree, 1 tsp pumpkin spice or pumpkin spice sugar-free syrup and sugar-free chocolate chips which you can add to the chaffle batter or after like we did.) The icing is pumpkin spice made the same as the cinnamon roll icing.
If you’d like to buy Mrs. Butterworths Sugar-Free Syrup $2.99 it’s a great substitution for maple syrup.
The Jordan’s Skinny Syrup Pumpkin Spice sugar-free syrup was found at Winners but you can buy it online as well.
How To Make Ham and Cheese Keto Chaffle Waffles
Ham and Cheese with Sour Cream and Chives Chaffle Waffles (add 1/3 cup cubed cooked ham to the basic recipe and top with sour cream, chives and parsley. I added more ham on top but that’s optional.)
How To Make A Keto Chaffle Waffle
Below is the basic chaffle waffles recipe that you will find all over the internet but I like to add baking powder to my recipe.
I’ve also added a touch of xanthan gum and that also works perfectly just in case you plan to test other recipes in your waffle machine.
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 teaspoon pink salt or salt
- 1 tablespoon Almond Flour
- 1/4 teaspoon Baking Powder
- 1/2 cup shredded Italian Mozzarella
- 1/2 cup shredded Old Cheddar Cheese (use whichever cheddar you like)
- Optional: Chives, Spring Onions, Cinnamon, Hot Pepper Flakes (add your spices to customize your Chaffle)
- Heat your waffle iron until the light signals it’s ready to be used
- Spray with a cooking spray even if it says it’s non-stick
- In a mixing bowl add your eggs, salt, almond flour, baking powder then mix together
- Mix both the shredded cheeses together in one bowl
- Once your waffle maker is ready to add cheese to coat the waffle maker.
- Pour the egg mixture over top of the cheese.
- Add the rest of the cheese over top of the egg mixture.
- Close the waffle maker for 3-5 minutes until golden brown.
- Makes 4 Mini Chaffles or 1 Belgium Chaffle
Whether you want to make a chaffle to pack as a keto snack on the go or as part of your lunch or dinner it’s a winner!
If you choose to cut out the almto ond flour and the baking powder this will be a zero carb recipe as the nutrition suggests below.
Discussion: What flavour of chaffles would you like the most? Do you prefer a sweet or savory chaffles?
Nutrition Info: Per 1 Belgian Chaffle Waffle 0.50g or 1 Mini 0.125g (almost zero carbs)
