Iced Dalgona Coffee (Whipped Coffee) 3 Ways Keto, Vegan, Traditional

Keto Dalgona Coffee

Money-Saving Quarantine Coffee With A Korean Inspiration

What started as a bulletproof coffee at our house turned into a whipped coffee known as Keto Dalgona Coffee in Korea.

Before Dalgona coffee was coined the “quarantine drink” for 2020 we were already making in our home.

You can enjoy Dalgona coffee either iced (cold) or hot as a coffee which makes this recipe a keeper.

Since Mrs. CBB has been Keto for almost 4 years now at one point she was making bulletproof coffee.

She would add instant coffee, coconut oil, MCT oil, sweetener and 35% whipping cream then blend it up.

The idea was that the bulletproof coffee would satisfy you until your first meal with the good fats.

Although, over the years she dropped the added fats since she didn’t need them any longer.

We had no idea that our coffee came with a name but found out a Korean actor Jung Il-woo ordered a whipped coffee at an eatery in Macau that reminded him of Dalgona.

Dalgona History In Korea

Canadian Sponge Toffee

What is Dalgona?

Dalgona is an inexpensive street candy called “honeycomb” or honeycomb toffee also known in Canada as sponge toffee.

You may recall biting into sponge toffee which you can find at the Dollar Store and it melts into your mouth.

It starts as a buttery toffee and ends with a bitter taste exactly how Jung Il-woo describes it from when he was a child.

That’s why he coined this magical whipped coffee the Dalgona coffee because the taste reminded him of his childhood.

He took to social media and started a #Dalgonacoffeechallenge and it took off all over the world.

You’ll find so many recipes for Dalgona whipped coffee but ours is the best keto and vegan version around, haha!

What is Dalgona Coffee?

It’s essentially a coffee whipped cream that you can make at home using 35% whipping cream or coconut cream.

If you don’t have 35% whipping cream don’t bother attempting to make this as you’ll never achieve the same texture.

You can find 35% whipping cream at every grocery store across Canada including Costco.

You can also make Dalgona coffee a vegan option which is just as delicious. (I made one).

How To Make Vegan Dalgona Coffee (Whipped Coffee) Keto and Non-Keto

Vegan Dalgona Coffee

If you’re looking for a dairy-free, vegan alternative you can also make Dalgona coffee whip using coconut cream.

Coconut cream is the heavy cream you find at the top of a can of coconut milk.

You can also purchase a premium coconut cream in the can which is a better option if you’re looking for savings.

We enjoy Let’s Do Organic Heavy Cream which we buy on Amazon Canada as you’ll often find it in our keto pantry.

The Minimalist Baker suggests that to always chill coconut cream or coconut milk before whipping it.

By adding your choice of sugar or sweetener to the cold coconut cream once whipped it’s perfect for Dalgona Coffee.

If you prefer a cold vegan Dalgona coffee opt for adding your favourite almond milk or coconut milk over ice.

Purchasing The Right Milk Frother For Whipped Coffee

Coffee Frother

To enjoy this coffee-infused whipped cream Dalgona coffee at home all you need is 4 ingredients and one kitchen tool.

By far one of the most raved about kitchen tools for frothing coffee is the Totobay Milk Frother, at least on Amazon Canada.

The Totobay Milk Frother, USB Rechargeable Electric Foam Maker with 2 Stainless Steel Whisk, TOTOBAY Handheld 3 Speeds Egg Beater Drink Mixer Mini Blender for Cappuccino, Latte, Butter coffee, Matcha Tea, Hot Chocolate, Eggs Mix and More.

You will want to own a good milk frother to get the job done in a timely fashion unless you get out the big guns.

By that I mean your whisk, stand-mixer, or hand-held beaters but who wants to do that every morning?

Not me, I tried it and although the hand whisk is very successful it’s just time-consuming.

Four Ingredients To Make Dalgona Coffee (Whipped Coffee)

Iced Dalgona Coffee Keto

  1. Instant coffee – We use Nescafe Classic Instant Coffee that you can also add to your Keto Costco Canada list.
  2. Granulated White Sugar or Sugar Substitute (Keto) We use Allulose, Krisda Stevia or Swerve Granulated Sweetener
  3. 35% whipping cream (Keto and Regular) or coconut cream (dairy-free, vegan option)
  4. Hot water, cold milk, unsweetened almond milk for Keto or any dairy beverage you’d like

We like to add cold cubes of ice to our Iced Dalgona Coffee which is just personal choice.

Another option would be to add crushed ice if you have an ice-crusher at home.

The ingredients are all equal parts of instant coffee, whipping cream, and sugar all of which I use 2 teaspoons.

If you want more whipped cream you can add more whipped cream.

To add a sugar-free syrup or syrup substitute for the sweetener or sugar just swap them out.

Example: remove the stevia and add the skinny syrup instead then mix to a whipping cream consistency.

Take Dalgona Coffee (Whipped Coffee) Flavours To The Next Level

The great thing about making a whipped coffee is that you can switch up the flavours.

You can swap your instant coffee for flavoured instant coffee or instant espresso.

Add your favourite sugar-free syrups to your Dalgona Coffee as we have to make keto Caramel Pecan Dalgona Coffee.

Other whipped Coffee flavours we’ve tried even though they may sound a bit wacky they were delicious.

These are all Keto-friendly Jordan’s Skinny syrups or Torani syrups that we’ve bought from Amazon Canada.

You can also find the regular sugar versions of many of these made by Torani.

Probably our favourite of the lot for the whipped Coffee was the glazed donut, butter toffee, and salted caramel.

If you’d like a little extra crunch on your Iced Dalgona Coffee add some Organic Cacao Nibs.
